The Bromborough Carp Night
Jan 23,2008 00:00 by Julian
2007 saw the first Wirral, Merseyside and District Carp Forum charity event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and what a storming event it turned out to be raising nearly £2000.00 on the night for charity. The event featured Matt Hayes as guest speaker and was supported by many tackle shops and the tackle trade in general, it was great to see everyone get together to support Macmillan.

This webpage, hosted by north west carp, is intended to provide an online portal for information on past events, details for future events, and also provides background information on the people behind the event and how it came about.

The Story So Far
Peter Henery explains how the first event in 2007 came about:

“In 2004 I suffered a massive stroke which very nearly killed me and ended my career in catering where I was a General Manager. One of the places I ran was the Hotel Victoria in New Brighton for 9 years, which played host to many Carp Society Events. As a dedicated Carp Angler for over 20 years all I had left was to go fishing with my best mate Alan Jones who helped me tremendously during my rehabilitation.

Having more time and seeing lots of old friends on the bank, we were constantly asked if we were going to put any “Carp Do’s” on as we became quite well known for helping in the past and as you know not much happens up north these days! Having been given a second chance myself, l now have an overwhelming urge to do good, so it was clear from the start that whatever we did was going to be for charity.

Talking to friends and acquaintances we quickly gained support and that is when we met Kirk Farrell the owner of Wirral Angling Centre whose wife was a cancer suffer and who had had first hand experience of the invaluable work Macmillan do. He made all the communication with the trade so much easier by rallying fantastic support and organising the exhibitions for us.

I wrote to Matt Hayes in the hope that he could offer any assistance or contacts to help with the event, not expecting that he would offer to do the guest speaker bit straight away, and for that we are truly indebted.

The 2007 event was a fabulous success, over 250 people attended and we raised just under £2000 for charity on the night.”

Why Macmillan Cancer Support?
We lost a very dear friend and Carp Angler in John Powell and Alan lost family to cancer so we decided to contact Macmillan Cancer Support and discuss our idea. The help, support and advice they gave us was second to none. We wanted to keep the event with a northern theme so we created the Wirral, Merseyside and District Carp Forum as a tag to the event.

The 2008 Event
This years event is set to be even bigger with the announcement that our guest speaker is none other than Danny Fairbrass, who along with his Korda Team are coming to the northwest to feature in the show.

This years event will also see Neil Smith and Aqua Products, Dynamite Baits, and Marc Coulson is covering the event with Total Carp and is bringing a special guest. We wonder who that will be? There is lots more planned with exhibitors and demo’s so watch Total Carp and press for further details

The 2008 event is set to be even bigger!

The event is to be held on the 22nd February 2008 at Bromborough Civic Centre and is planned to open doors at 6.00pm. A bar and refreshments are available, ticket prices will be £8.00 Adults and all children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult these will be charged at £4.00. Watch out for further details.

The organising team this year is made up of Peter Henery, Kirk Farrell, Paul Simpkins (now known as Peter), Kirk, and Fiends by Macmillan. Alan Jones unfortunately is too busy with work this year but as always we value his input when he can.

We hope that anglers will support the event again this year by spreading the word and maybe donating a prize or two for the raffle which you all did so generously last year. Already we have received the donation of a fabulous “Week all inclusive Carp Fishing in France at Etang de Negrelroube which will be featured in Total Carp in the next few months.

This was the best event in the northwest last year and this year the best just got better.

2008 Post Event Report

Hundreds of Carpers flocked to the Wirral recently to see Celebrity angler Danny Fairbrass, and raise over £3500.00 at a charity evening in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support!

The Wirral, Merseyside and District Carp Forum evening held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, 22 February, at Bromborough Civic Centre Wirral saw fishing sponsors and promoters from around the country attend the evening. Danny Fairbrass and team Korda grabbed the attention of the audience for nearly 3 hours, no mean feat in itself with a dynamic and informative presentation about his career, his highlights, and the way thinks whilst on the bank and how happy he was to give his time to support Macmillan Cancer Support, at an evening which raised £3552.49

It most definitely was a chance for Carpers young or old to get together and enjoy an evening of talks by one of the sports icons, browse tackle displays and informative demo’s from well known manufactures…and of course to spend lots of money for Macmillan! One of the many highlights, was an auction for a all inclusive fishing holiday in France kindly donated by the Fat Carp Company, which sold for a staggering £500.00.the generosity of the trade and local tackle shops was demonstrated by the amazing prizes, such as a brand new bivvy donated by Total Carp Magazine, Drennan International, Fox International, Dynamite baits, Aqua Products, Protak, Korda and many many more.

Organisers Peter Henery, Kirk Farrell and Paul Simpkins who for over 25 years have been dedicated Carp Anglers are delighted at the amount raised on the night and thank everybody who helped to make the evening a success.

However Aimee Scally, Community Fundraiser for the Wirral area is overjoyed at the amount of commitment and hard work Peter, Kirk, Paul and the team have all put into making the evening a success, and knows that the evening could not have been so good without all of their hard work: “It is amazing to see and work with such dedicated members of the local community who are taking time to involve Macmillan into their lives, raising money to help those affected by cancer in the local area. I cannot say thank you enough times; they have been fabulous fundraisers and I really look forward to working with them again towards 2009”

Kirk said, "We were overwhelmed at the success of the event”, of course our guest speaker Danny Fairbrass was a real highlight. As someone who has first hand experience of the devastating effect cancer not only has on the patient but the whole of the family. I feel that If by this and future events we can ease the suffering of anyone in our community then its all worthwhile and together with  existing and new friends of the angling world we will continue to raise money for Macmillan, it most certainly was an evening to remember; We met a true carp icon, shared stories, got tips and raised lots for charity…what a perfect mix”.
