The week ended on 24 fish but lots of very spawned out fish brought the average weights down somewhat, but as to be expected after the events this year. The fish have still been spawning in small groups with the males hunting the odd female down that is still carring eggs. Maybe it will continue this week but it's very hard to predict this season the outcome of each week.
The fish do seem to be in good shape and fighting well, apart from that catch rates are starting to increase each week with signs of the fish feeding on naturals again, tail patterns and bubbling all around the lake and fish being caught in each swim which always balances things out for a group.
The weather is set to be very hot indeed this week with temps already into the 30s throughout the day time but the bottom looks like it has been ripped-up down in Pegs 4 & 5 over the night time so hopefully the lads on this week will get amongst them!!
We have a slot avalable for two anglers for the last week of the season which is the 27th Oct - 4th Nov 2013. With the weather running a month behind this year we might be in for an Indian summer and hopefully one or two big fish for the backend. This is the only slot left for this season so if you fancy a last minute fishing session for later this year, please get in touch.
That's All Folks.
]]>Anglers and members of the public are urged to report all sightings of the seal to seal@anglingtrust.net to help identify patterns of behaviour. There have been no reports of the seal's movements for over a week. Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust said: "local anglers have been very concerned about the impact of the seal on fish stocks and fishing and we have received a large amount of correspondence from members on this issue. We welcome the Environment Agency's recognition of the impact on the specimen fishery and that its officers have agreed to work closely with the angling community to identify workable short and long term solutions."
Dafydd Evans, Area Manager for the Environment Agency said: "We recognise the concern by anglers of the impact on specimen fish and that fishery owners can take action to protect their fishery. We will work closely with the angling community to investigate practical solutions to deter predation by seals"
]]>The pollution was discovered on Monday by volunteer riverfly monitors working for Action for the River Kennet (ARK). In their statement ARK said:
"The Environment Agency were immediately alerted, as well as the downstream river keepers. By this morning the pollution had spread from the Elcot Lane area to beyond Ramsbury, but the river upstream of Elcot was healthy.
The Environment Agency are currently investigating the extent and cause of the incident. Although few fish appear to have been killed the absence of invertebrates means that both fish and other wildlife have nothing to eat, which will have a serious impact on the river's ecology. ARK have a team of over 50 volunteer riverfly monitors who monitor over 20 sites on the Kennet every month."
The Angling Trust have been involved throughout and have been liaising with both Thames Water and the EA. Their Campaigns Coordinator Martin Salter will be attending the forthcoming meeting organised by the EA to discuss the incident with river keepers and fishery interests.
Mark Owen, Freshwater and Environment Campaigns Manager for the Angling Trust said:
"This is a truly appalling pollution which seems to have been caused by a small amount of lethal pesticide which entered the sewerage system in the Marlborough area. We very much support the work to track down both the source and those responsible for the pollution and our colleagues at Fish Legal are ready to take action on behalf of our member clubs.
Even if fish stocks remain untouched there is now precious little left for the fish or other wildlife to eat which is why the Angling Trust is calling for measures to try and recolonise the affected stretches with invertebrates as quickly as possible.
We will support any measures the EA recommend to restore invertebrate communities in a sustainable manner."
Martin Salter added:
"The Angling Trust wants to know why on earth a lethal chemical like chlorpyriphos is allowed to be used anywhere near a river or watercourse. Apparently the 15 kms wipeout of invertebrates between Marlborough and Hungerford may have been caused by as little as a couple of spoonfuls of the stuff. If this is the case then the sooner we follow the lead of Singapore and America and ban it the better.
We shall be asking the Environment Agency to immediately add this chemical to their Watch List of Priority Hazardous Substances to ensure all water bodies are monitored for the presence or absence of this chemical in our rivers."
]]>Keith & Phil are brothers with Steve and Paul making the 4th anglers of the group. They went to the supermarket on Sunday to stock up ready for a BBQ that evening. Now they blame being tired instead of Pauls cracking French for the error, but after a quarrel over square Burgers and no carrier bags at the till, they returned for the evening to sup a few beers & light the BBQ, followed by a stack of meat going on for a good feed-up. Now once again the square Burgers start a bust-up with "what the F are square burgers all about, and the French do eat some strange things" being mentioned. Now these burgers started to smell like road kill that had been baking in the midday sun, even though they were all starving no one has claimed to eating them but all I can say is one of the lads never made it to the toilet in time, and two others have been sick as "DOGS". They only had a cartoon picture of a Dog on the front of the packet holding a plate which was a bit of a give away, and the pet burgers in question were 96% chicken carcass. Laugh, Laugh, I will never let them live that one down and talk about topic of the week. So next time you're in the local super market make sure there are no smiley pet faces on the front of your BBQ packs!!!! One to remember.
The lads have been quite relaxed about the fishing which has effected the catch rates somewhat, but the main thing is they have all broke a pb with 20+ fish on the bank and 3 fish over 40lb+ in the total to 43lb 8oz. Most of the other fish are low 30lb and upper 20lb fish all around 28lb and looking very empty indeed. The fish have been spawning AGAIN on Sunday evening all along the far bank, with odd flits through the week here and there, the main thing being they are getting it out of their system, which bodes well for the backend of the season!!! The main thing is the bulk of the fish are now starting to feed and I think July could be quite a good month, even though it's set to be a heat wave over the next week with day temps of 30oc+ every day.
About the last blog in relation to Rigs, I have had so many emails I cannot keep up with anglers asking so many questions. It's good to see so many of you are thinking about your fishing and want to improve hookholds, which in turn helps the welfare of the fish. We all want to catch fish in perfect condition and we all play a part in the catching and handling of them to keep it that way.
Paul this week is a predator angler, so he has proved me wrong this week catching 3 small Jack Pike on a small plug, fair play to the lad and you cannot beat a surprise. Maybe his next predator might be the Zander he is after on the last night!!!

]]>Fish to 39lb 12oz and lots of fish in the 32lb-33lb bracket and some upper 20lb males. All the fish caught are fighting like wild Tigers which is good to see after giving so much energy up over the last few weeks, normally they can be spent afterwards, but I think they had gathered strength the previous week when it was quiet. The fish seem to be a good 12-15% down after their antics, but will soon gain that and more over the rest of the season.
The lads started catching at night on the Sunday & Monday but with a full, bright moon being around the nights have gone very quiet and all the fish are coming out in the day time now.
One thing that does need to be mentioned is anglers attention to rigs. The lads have all been using the same style of rig and hook resulting in 12 fish being lost due to hook pulls, that is a lot of fish not to be banked and not just what has been lost but it can also result in unnecessary mouth damage. After Steve dropping 3 fish on the bounce in Peg 4 we had a good chat and tied a few more rigs, the next 4 fish all went in the net so the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say. I will take a picture of both rigs tomorrow to explain, but please take your rig choice seriously, it can be the difference between an average week and something special, also some fish only see the bank once every 1-2 years so you could be losing something that could break your heart!!!!
There has been a little swim swapping going on in the last 24 hrs resulting in Tom pulling out of Peg 5 into Peg 3, and Steve moving straight in Peg 5 for the evening and banking 4 fish straight away, talk about rubbing salt in the wound and as you can imagine the lads are ripping Tom apart down there, followed by Tom then having a pick-up in Peg 3 while talking to me on the path, he ran that fast to the rods with his feet spinning around like a cartoon character who couldn't get traction and falling over no less than 3 times, I nearly fell off the quad laughing, while he is holding the rod in one hand and the flap of skin over his knee with the other, crazy that one!!!
All in all a great bunch of lads and many laughs have been had this week, no doubt more fish will be coming out and it's all about getting beds of bait over the rods because it's feeding time.
Back very soon, over & out.
