After about ten years of use, my True Utility LED Torch was finally getting to the point where it needed to be retired. Despite having been left at the lake, in the lake, and goodness knows where else over the years. It’s offered faultless service and so will be respectfully retired and left in the car as a spare.
So, the search was on for a new one. Without trying to sound too anal, my torch is my best friend when fishing and to a degree an extension of my arm. I’m not one for having all different types in my tackle – a pointless waste of weight and space – I just have one good one that does everything I need during the hours of darkness.
For whatever reason, I just can’t get on with head torches; they never seem to do just what I want or aim just where I want, and so I much prefer a lightweight hand held torch which I can stick in my mouth when messing around with end tackle or baiting up, and then keep zipped in my pocket when I’m in the sack so that I always know where it is when I need it.
I use a torch a hell of a lot. I tend to fish two overnighters each week and at this time of year I don’t get to the water till around 8pm, so it’s dark when I get there and often still dark when I pack up in the morning to get back home, so my new purchase needed to be something that would stand up to a lot of use. After quite a bit of searching I came across the Wildcat LED 40 Lumens Torch.
The Wildcat seemed to fit the bill perfectly, in that it was much more powerful then my previous torch, and with no real increase in size or weight. Add to that the fact that it was reduced from £20.00 to just £8.88 and I’d added it to my shopping cart before I knew it – at that price I could happily take a gamble.
I need not have worried though, the torch has performed admirably over the last month or two and I could not be happier with it. At just 140g with batteries it’s extremely lightweight, and it’s a synch to use with its variable focus beam. A lot of my fishing at the moment is to pre-baited spots to around thirty or forty yards, and on narrow beam the torch is picking them out beautifully, even when there’s amounts of mist around.
It kicks out a really clean and powerful light through its heavy duty polycarbonate magnifying lens, which to be honest allows it to punch well above its weight. Battery life is good, though as yet I’m unsure just how good, as it’s still going strong on the two AA batteries it came supplied with!
Measuring just 15cm long it can easily be stored in my pocket and comes with a lanyard for those who might need one. Its aluminium alloy construction has already stood up to countless knocks and scrapes on the bank and it’s shrugged them all off with consummate ease.
Knowing now how good this torch is, I would happily have paid the twenty quid for it, the fact that I got it for less than nine just makes it even sweeter!
