Decent maps are a must for any specimen angler. Not only can they be used when travelling to and from waters, but they are great for pinpointing those ‘secret’ spots well off the beaten track. For years I’ve had an extensive collection of Landranger maps covering most of the country for use in pinpointing waters. By hook or by crook and through using little snippets of information here and there I’ve been able to track down some of the UK’s most remote and ‘hush-hush’ waters - without OS maps I would have had no chance!
The Landranger series OS maps, which most people will be familiar with, have served me well over the years, but I’ve now started to build a collection of Explorer maps as the detail on paths, footpaths and bridleways is much clearer - great for when you’re on a reconnaissance trip and need to know how best to get across land in a hurry.
Explorer maps also clearly show all land which is open to the public; very handy to know when there might not be a public footpath in the immediate vicinity. In addition not all paths are public rights of way, and thus many paths are unmarked when you are out and about. As such, the explorer maps also detail paths which are not public rights of way, but where the landowner allows public use - a real bonus.
As I also like to get out walking with Lisa when time permits; the Explorer maps are excellent as they also detail tourist and leisure information far better than the old Lanranger series. You can find visitor centres, places of special interest, country parks, reserves, and even public houses - the most important feature of any good walkJ
If you class yourself as a keen angler and don’t have a decent OS map of your local area; my advice is simple - Go out and get one! You may be very surprised at what you find right on your doorstep.
Explorer maps retail at £6.99 and can be purchased online at: www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk
