I prefer a single bright pop up positioned in the right place that will get any carps attention, I’ve caught many fish this way over the years.

The “multi-rig” as it is widely known is a rig that you can cast almost anywhere to showing fish or position on gravel, silt or even light weed just by adjusting the height of the popup, this really is a versatile rig. The other benefit is that if you accidently blunt a hook and cannot re-sharpen it effectively or you catch a fish on the rig, you can change the hook very quickly without having to retie a new rig every time, just slip off the retaining loop, slide on a new hook, position the loop again around the shank and you have a finished brand new rig all ready to cast out.

How I have found to best fish this rig is to attach to a ring swivel on a lead clip system, I trim the “Critical Mass” putty until the 15mm pop up just sinks. This enables you to use a small piece of Dissolving Foam if fishing over weed and as the foam dissolves the pop up drifts slowly down to rest on any debris on the lake bed, thus presenting perfect presentation every time.

The components you will need to tie this simple but effective rig.

Cut off the desired length of hook link depending on what you are fishing over, a good starting point is around 12 inches. I also like to blend in the colour of the hook link to the bottom I’m fishing over.

Tie a large loop in one end with an overhand knot, bear in mind that the size of the loop you are tying will represent the height of the finished pop up.

Take a “Peel & Pull” Stripper Tool from Gardner, these little gadgets make stripping back the correct amount of coating so easy, gone are the days of me using my teeth. Strip back around an inch, this will give the finished pop up more movement.

Now tie a smaller loop in the other end of the hook link, this is for attaching to the ring swivel on my lead clip system.

Attach the hook link via a loop to loop knot to the ring swivel. This will make it easy if you have to change hook link colour, breaking strain or even if it gets damaged. Attaching it to this ring will give the rig a lot more movement and aid in a tangle free cast.

Take a Size 6 Covert “Chod” hook, these hooks are perfect for this type of rig, the Covert finish makes them less obvious on the lakes bottom. They also have a very sharp straight point which aid better penetration when you get a pickup when using popup rigs. It also has a slightly out turned eye which makes the 45 degree angle off the hook when this rig is tied up, giving it the perfect alignment for better hooking.

Thread the hook onto the loop as shown in the picture.

Take a large Covert Rig Ring, this again coming from the Covert range has the anti-glare coating on the ring making it inconspicuous.

Thread a Covert Rig Ring onto the loop as you did with the hook.

Pull the loop end over the point of the hook, pull down gently creating the “D” effect for the pop up to run along. You can have this as small or large as you require.

This is how the rig should now look with a nice “D”, note the aggressive angle of the hook, which is what makes this rig so effective.

Take a 15mm pop up of your choice.

Tie securely to the Covert Rig Ring as shown in the picture.

Take a piece of Gardner “Critical Mass” Putty. I like to choose the colour relative to the bottom I’m fishing over, in this instance it’s the “Camo Green” as I’m using this rig over light weed.

Mould around the end of the stripped back hook link to give the rig added movement. A good tip here is when you are making a hot drink, leave the putty on the top of the kettle, this will make the putty a lot more pliable in extremely cold weather. Just mould around with your fingers if not as cold.

Here is the finished rig. You can now test the rig at the waters edge and trim back the putty to create a slow sinking pop up that will rest on any weed on the bottom.

Along the way I managed to catch almost all my target fish from this venue, all except one or two which I went back and bagged a few years later. Interestingly this pair of lakes contained all types of substrate on the lakebed; gravel, a sandy gravel mix, silt - both deep and shallow - good and bad, as well as clay areas and weed beds. The water clarity at times would go from gin clear to heavily coloured dependant on the weather, and the depths varied dramatically ranging anything from 18 inches right down to around 14 feet. The lakes were also packed with visible features like islands, bays, overhanging trees, bushes and lily pads. They also contained specimen tench and bream, all of which I felt needed to be considered in my overall approach.
Some people have just a couple of rigs in there armoury, which is fine, but I'm a firm believer that some carp can be particularly cagey, riggy, feeding extremely cautiously. A little tweak to a bait or rig can catch you a special bonus fish that might have ordinarily cleaned you out of bait and got away with it. If you fish over a clean and firm lakebed in a water with low visibility and a high stock of competitive carp then most correctly tied rigs will suffice. However, when you're fishing venues like the club lakes I'm describing customising and adapting you're approach can give you a real ‘edge'.

In order to achieve consistent success I played around with my rigs and the lead arrangements, tailoring them to suit a particular area of the Back Lake where I laid two traps; one over a clean gravel slope that met smooth silt and the other over a very flat gravel/silt mix on a far margin in a very carpy looking bay. From my observations I was confident my target fish would be spending a lot of time there, especially in the warmer evenings as the sun went down. What I came up with initially was a snowman type arrangement with a 15mm Mistral bottom bait and a chopped down pop-up attached to a size 8 Mugga, 7 inches of coated braid with a little stripped back at the hook. This acted as a little hinged section and the rig was fished with a 1 ½ oz flat pear running on an Enterprise Tackle run-ring and two feet of 25lb Gardner Plummet leadcore.

This was working well enough, though sometimes I would reel in to find a whittled or missing pop up! I was trimming these hookbaits down so the bait sunk under the weight of the hook but the small fish attacking them would ruin the presentation occasionally! In my mind I wasn't fishing 100% effectively until I came up with the idea of using cylinders of Gardner Tackle Zig Rig Foam to tip my hookbaits and to counter balance the bottom bait. The addition of Zig Foam was small fish proof, without altering the flavour of my hook bait and it gave me the option of a range of colours to tip the hook bait. After using most of the range white and yellow always scored well on the club lakes, being very visual amongst PVA bags of free offerings.

The foam tipped hook baits were just a minor detail but really gave me an edge as I felt it was beneficial to be able to consistently control buoyancy and the colour safe just as I want it too. Another benefit the bait arrangement gave was that the neutral buoyancy meant that hook bait flies into the fish's mouth with the slightest of sucks. If you incorporate a mini rig ring the hookbait slides towards the eye making the aggressively curved Mugga ‘hook point heavy', giving you an efficient hook hold and a difficult rig for the fish to deal with.

As for the final lead arrangement, I knew sometimes to hit the right spot I might need to cast a couple of times so a lighter lead (just enough to get me out to the area) would help to keep disturbance to a minimum. In the end I opted for a Gardner Flat Pear lead purely because I didn't want the bait being pushed about and rolling down the shelf by fish feeding around the rig.

Eventually I eventually adopted a running lead set up. Why? One day I saw my rod tip bouncing and wondered what was causing it? Curiosity got the better of me so I crept towards one of my traps and saw a carp sat on the spot thrashing its head side to side using my semi fixed inline lead to throw the rig from its mouth. Naturally I rushed back to the rod and hit it! The fish turned out to be a dark scaley high double. Naturally I became a tad paranoid recognising that this probably wasn't an isolated incident and that I had potentially missed out on a few carp so that's when I adapted the idea of a running lead.

Once I had fine-tuned the rig and got everything pinned down with putty and flying back leads I soon ended a 4 year quest catching a mysterious, and the much talked about Ghost carp that had only ever graced the bank a few times.

I remember the session when I caught the ‘Ghostie' particularly well, it was a balmy warm late summer evening and knowing my spots well setting the traps was easy. I saw the ‘Ghostie' drift into the bay, possibly looking to see if he was being fished for I reckon, then it exited the area only to come back with a couple of his pals to dine with. A plume of bubbles appeared just off my left spot half hour later, just as the light was fading fast and shortly after I was to receive a bizarre take, exactly like you would expect from a small bream.

As I tightened up and lifted into a dull low resistance then wound again this time to be met with a few head shakes making me believe a small tench was the culprit. I wound down again, but then found myself winding erratically trying to keep up with the speed of the fish in question. This crafty carp was heading straight towards the river inlet that was laced with tree roots and other obstacles round to the left of the swim; so pulling hard with the tip fully submerged I then turned the fish steering it clear of danger and when it then hit the surface in front of me I managed to hold him there, he gave a few more head shakes, trying to throw the rig, before I steered him over the waiting net. Funny thing is at this point I knew I had a ‘Ghostie' but I was convinced it was the smaller resident at around 15 lb.

After all the excitement I had a quick breather and prepared the unhooking facilities; readied some lake water, forceps, carp care products, sling and scales. With everything ready I unshipped the arms from the spreader block, rolled up the mesh on the net, bit the line (ensuring all its fins where flat and safe from snagging on the mesh), and it was only then I realised what I had captured! It had to be the seemingly impossible Ghostie just because of the sheer weight I was supporting in the folds of the net.

The fish was well nailed with the Mugga set an inch back in the centre of the bottom lip, and the carps mouth was immaculate, completely devoid of bruising or tears. Evidence to suggest not only did it rarely get caught but it had been cared for appropriately in the past, after all the fish is someone else's dream so respect is paramount. A phone call was made to a neighbouring angler whilst I secured it in the net and we took a few snaps and gazed at this aloof mysterious carp. Not the fight I expected from the notoriously hard fighting character but as amazing as I had ever wished for!!!

Since those days I've caught much larger fish from other waters, but this was nearly a decade ago and 20's still seemed to be held in a high regard as a sizeable carp - and a thirty, well they were really special.

Fishing pressure is a key factor, along with angling in favourable conditions. Taking time to watch the behaviour of surface feeding carp then working out how to outwit them is one of my great pleasures in fishing.
I have spent untold hours floater fishing and the following rig is the one that has proved successful for even the shyest of carp, even those that have seen it all before. Floater fishing requires finesse and your tackle can be adjusted accordingly, using light test curve rods such as the 2.25lb test curve model I favour, combined with a smaller reel than the usual ‘big pits'. When floater fishing on waters with prolific birdlife feeding freebies can be a problem! The bait attracts the wildfowl, which in turn prevents the carp from feeding confidently and competitively. By chance I discovered a method that takes the birds longer to cotton onto and provides a way of delivering freebies accurately and at a distance that exceeds normal loose feed range. Using Gardner's Wide Boy PVA mesh, I make up small bags of mixers which can either be catapulted out or nicked onto the hook. Every cast presents freebies directly around the hookbait when the PVA dissolves.

What you'll need...

The rig I use is based on 10lb HydroFlo mainline - as it is soft but very strong, abrasion resistant and reliable in the 0.28mm diameter. This is coupled with Gardner 10lb Zig Link which is clear and has a good level of stretch as the hook length. This stretch is important to protect hook holds on small hooks and buffers the movements of powerful fish. This stretch also makes for excellent knot strength. The hooks I prefer (due to their straight point and impressive strength to size ratio) are the size 10 Incizors. These are perfect for use with baits such as Enterprise's pop up Tigernut's or chum mixers or Mistral's floaters.

When necessary I incorporate a Flatliner controller for additional casting weight as these come in three sizes they cover a variety of ranges. They are threaded onto the mainline and kept in position between two beads set using stop knots tied with our power gum. The stop knots are tied with three turns, and whilst this will not normally slip whilst casting at close to medium range, if fishing at long range I like to tie another, just above the first, for security. The hooklink, that should ideally be around 5 feet, is attached with the 'loop to loop' method giving excellent knot strength. I prefer this to using anything that adds extra knots or weight such as swivels, rings etc (potential weak spots). Make up plenty of small mesh bags of mixers in advance so as not to waste valuable 'active feeding' time on the bank. Simply thread your hook point in to the bait and thread it round to the back of the shank. The mixer bag can then be nicked on. There is no need to use hairs, bait bands or glue with the three hook baits I mentioned earlier.

1. The ‘advanced' label really relates more to the combination of materials and how they are used in the rig's construction, with the addition of a few tried and tested tweaks to get the most out of the rig. Tweaks worth considering would include using a rig ring blow-back style trapping the hair to make the finished rig react faster when a fish inhales, mouths or tries to eject your hookbait. With pop up rigs it is normally best to position the rig ring so that it traps the hair on the hook shank opposite the barb (on barbless hooks this would be 2 or 3 mm up from the point) as this will naturally keep the hookbait set correctly in relation to the bend of the hook.

Another easy tweak is the addition of a section of 0.5mm silicone or shrink tube over the hook eye. By extending the shank and holding the hook link so it is straighter to the shank with this tube, you are ensuring that the hook point is in the right position to catch hold as soon as the bait is sucked in as it will be less likely to droop over.
The last critical adjustments relate to the balancing and height of the pop-up. The balancing is how slowly the hook bait sinks when the counter weight has been added onto the hook bait. How do you decide how fast your hookbait should sink and how high the pop up should be above the lake bed?

As a rough guide we recommend fishing pop ups that sink slowly over low weed and silt, using a slightly longer hooklink and with the pop up high enough to remain clearly visible and accessible to browsing carp. If you're fishing on clean gravel, perhaps over lots of bait then a low pop up with counter weight only a few mm from the hook and over weighted so that it sinks at the same rate as a freebie is a good starting point. This is because the fish will tend to feed more aggressively, and with their mouths tight to the lake bed, and the heavier pop up will be less likely to swirl around as the fish moves near the rig.

Tip - Hook Bait Buoyancy: It's critical that your hook baits are good enough to maintain their buoyancy for the duration of the time they will be out in the water. If you're fishing long periods it's important that you check that the pop up hook bait is still Ok when you reel it in. My favourite rig uses 25Ib VIGILANTE as the hook link combined with the awesome Longshank Mugga hook. Recently I have been using this combination successfully fishing at a silty lake and it has served me well being cast just about anywhere at that venue! The pop up is tied on to a Covert 3mm Rig Ring running between two hook stops, so that I can adjust the placing and size of bait with ease. The stop nearest the hook point is left fairly central for baits of 14mm or bigger, but is moved nearer the point for smaller baits of 10-12mm for example or if I am using a grain of Enterprise corn.

There are two trains of thought on how much counterbalance weight should be used with pop ups, but as a rule I normally over-weight pop ups fished on gravel lakebeds and finely balance hook baits fished over silt. The beauty of this set up is that even a small 10mm bait can effectively hide the big strong hook whilst retaining excellent bottom lip hooking properties.....drop one in the edge and you will see what I mean!

I often sleeve the hook knot with a small piece of silicone tubing protruding about 5mm past the eye as this causes what is already an amazingly quick turning hook to be even more aggressive. You can test this by trying to move one across the palm of your hand. It will turn before moving showing that mechanically the rig is spot on!
Long sweeping curved shank hooks are not allowed on some waters, but a similar set up can be achieved using a Longshank Incizor and a small piece of Covert Supa-Shrink tubing creating the aggressive angle below the eye, or a short shank hook with a longer shrink tube ‘kicker'.

For a 25lb breaking strain braid, Vigilante has a fine diameter and nice brown colour, and when viewed in the lake it simply blends in exceptionally well on the bottom. I rub some Critical Mass putty up and down the hooklink and put a couple of tiny blobs of it on the link to ensure it settles down flush to the lake bed. Being woven with pure Dyneema, Vigilante is incredibly strong for its diameter, but can retain a little buoyancy unless treated this way.

Finally, I incorporate an Anti-Tangle sleeve at the swivel and rig foam on the hook to help avoid any tangling on the cast, but for PVA bag fishing I simply shorten the hook link to around 4" and dispense with the sleeve and dissolving rig foam. The rig has proven excellent for single hook bait fishing over all sorts of lakebeds and will perform equally well fished over beds of bait and in PVA bags too.

1. Start off by attaching the Long Shank Mugga to the Vigilante with a simple knotless knot

2. Trim off excess as the hookbait will be mounted on a rig ring, not a hair

3. Push 1cm of 0.5mm silicon tubing up over the eye of the hook as shown

4. Thread the first Covert Hook Stop onto the hook, so that the widest end is facing up the shank

5. Thread on a rig ring and a second hook stop as shown here

6. Create a loop knot. We recommend adding an extra twist to make the knot 'figure of 16' as this is stronger with braids

7. With the extra twist it is a little trickier to bed the knot down. Take your time as a stronger knot is worth the effort

8. Smear Critical Mass rig putty down hooklink to make it sink like a stone

9. The finished rig - just waiting for a pop up to be tied onto the rig ring

10. In reality they aren't hard to hook because they are super intelligent - far from it in fact! Normally it's just because of the way the fish are feeding on the bait.
Quite often this can be because the carp are keeping their mouths tight to the lake bed and using their extendable top lips to carefully manipulate the bait under their over slung mouth where they carefully suck up the freebies, sifting out bottom debris and anything that feels unnatural. In fact, most of the time when fish are deemed to be tricky it is because they are feeding tight to the lake bed in one way or another.
One of the most consistent ways of hooking carp feeding like this is to mount a ‘balanced' (slow sinking) hookbait on a D-rig.

The D-rig keeps the hookbait close to the eye of the hook - in a position that ensures the hook goes into the fish's mouth even if it tentatively inhales hookbait. The added buoyancy added to the hookbait to make it ‘balanced' can be achieved in a number of ways; from making or buying your own ‘wafters' to using a snowman setup incorporating either a small pop up, a piece of foam or a piece of plastic Enterprise sweetcorn. Alternatively drilling out the bait and plugging it with a piece of our highly buoyant Zig foam works a treat and keeps the hookbait looking more like any freebies.

This is a great method whether you are using boilies or particles, summer or winter.
D-rigs can be tied with either Fluorocarbon or a copolymer, using a straight pointed hook - preferably a pattern with a straight eye or slightly out turned eye (either an Incizor or a Chod hook). With these materials the finished rig ends up very subtle looking. The rig camouflage is enhanced by using a slow sinking hookbait as it tends to settle over the hook - and what better camouflage can there be than that!

How to tie the D-Rig:

1. Start of with a knotless knot - for D-rigged bottom baits and our chod rig about 9 turns is about right

2. Put on a small rig ring

3. The D should look a little like this - small and neat and sitting straight on the back of the shank of the hook

6. We recommend a well tied figure of 8 loop knot for quick attachment to swivels and clips

7. The finished rig

Another tried and tested bottom bait rig tweak involves lengthening the hair, and trapping it round to the bottom of the bend with a small piece of silicon tubing. By changing the position of the hair the mechanics of the rig changes dramatically, and as long as the hook bait and the rig are taken fully into the mouth, as soon as the hooklink tightens the combined action of the weight of the hook and the heavy hookbait turns the hook point down into the most secure hooking zone - the middle of carps bottom lip.

Lewis with a lovely mirror

Lewis Read
July 2012

www.GardnerTackle.co.uk

WATCH THE BEST CARP VIDEOS ON THE WEB EACH MONTH FOR FREE!!
VISIT OUR NORTH WEST CARP TV PLAYER!

SEEN A GOOD PRICE ON CARP TACKLE...? It's probably the only rig presentation guaranteed not to tangle. You can either adopt a roving approach, where it's a one bite at a time method, or you could put a couple of bags on a clear spot in the weed and lightly spod over the top of them. With either method, multiple catches can be had!

We normally use a 2oz Flat Pear Inline lead in PVA bags, increasing to a 3 or 4oz lead if greater distance is required. A four inch length of Trickster Heavy braid would be our chosen hook link, tied to a size 10 Covert Mugga hook, but we've also successfully used coated hook links such as Sly Skin and Disruption in solid bags. If venue rules allow it we would use Plummet Lead core Leaders when bag fishing.

What are you actually trying to achieve by washing out your baits…?

I might actually know why some people use this method. Maybe I am a little unsure that some of the people really know why they are actually doing it. It might work for them. Maybe some people are just copying what they have read in the magazines, but are still unaware of the reasons why they are doing it. Maybe others are yet to try it. Hopefully some of this information will give you a better understanding of what it is all about and give you the confidence to try it.

First of all, let’s look at some possible reasons why you might want to wash out your baits; 1) Your bait is too strongly flavoured and you want to tone it down a bit. 2) You want the colour of your bait to fade a little so they look like they have been in the water for several hours. 3) You might want to add something into your baits. 4) you want to create a different baiting situation to try and fool some extra cautious “clever” carp.

Why is some bait just so over flavoured? Many baits are made to catch the angler [to sell] and not always catch the fish! I am not talking about hookbaits, but strongly flavoured freebies. I have seen lads fishing baits that were so strong that I could tell what bait they were fishing with when I was 50 yards away from their swim. The strong smell was being carried down wind to me, and as I walked up I told them what bait they were using. They would look shocked!

Strongly flavoured baits do still have their place. I might use them as 2 bait stringers, or a couple of broken baits in a mesh bag, as a winter tactic, or on one rod to move around the swim. There is no doubt that these over flavoured baits will catch fish, but maybe they are not so suited to a mass baiting approach. I have seen lads catch several fish while fishing over a large spread of high flavour baits, but most of these fish tend to be stockies or smaller fish. The more naive fish might be suckers for this tactic, but the older, wiser, bigger fish might be too wise to fall for such a blatant approach. They may move through the swim, but might well be in a heightened state of alert!

In my humble opinion a decent flavour level will be very low and almost undetectable within the bait. More of the smell of the bait will come from the actual food ingredients that make up the boilies. Fish meals, milk powders, herbs and spices, etc, will be giving off some background smell/taste and this is a less obvious, more long term option for your freebies.

Brightly/strongly coloured baits - will a soak tone down the colour of these baits? Maybe they are too strongly coloured to start with. Most quality food baits will have that washed out look once they have been in the water for only an hour or so, but is this really necessary? I have caught plenty of fish within 30 minutes of baiting my swim, so maybe the carp are not as fussy as some are lead to believe. If you want to wash out your baits do you really need lake water? I can see why you might want to avoid tap water due to the added chemicals that may leave some background residue. As any fish keeper could tell you, it is possible to store tap water in a bucket for 48 hours and the chlorine content will disperse. You may also use rain water.

Re-hydrating. This is not the same as washing out. It may give your baits the appearance of washed out baits, but the main purpose is to actually add something extra to the baits. A glug will coat the outside of your baits, and may even soak into the outer layer. Re-hydrating is starting with dried out baits and then adding liquids until the bait is fully filled with moisture. You would start off by air drying your baits until they fully dried and rattling like marbles. This means they will absorb much more liquid than a bait that is fresh, in the normal sense. You can then leave them to soak for 12-24 hours in a water/liquid so they are fully re-hydrated. You will know when they are ready as the moisture will have reached the middle of the baits. If they are not quite ready you will see this when you break a bait in half and you will notice the dry centre core. They will draw the liquid right in and slowly leach out this liquid into the lake once the baits are scattered around the swim.

The list of liquids to use to re-hydrate your baits is endless, but to suggest a few… The water left from boiling your hemp or other particles, a solution made up of water and added soluble liquids, such as fish sauce [from Asian food supermarkets], salt, chilli powder, molasses, etc. I have used water from bins that I have had large amounts of maize and/or wheat in soak and found this to be excellent. You could also buy liquid additives from bait companies, but it will be more cost effective [and maybe just as good] to be a little inventive!

Another overlooked up side to re-hydrating is that the freebies will now be loaded with liquid/water. This means they will now not take on lake water like a normal freebie. This will help prevent baits soaking up the smelly silt from the lake bed, and will keep the bait smelling fresh. This isn’t an issue with most lakes, but its well worth bearing in mind.

It is also possible to add a little something extra to cheaper bait in order to give it more fish appeal. You would be using the cheapo bait as a carrier for a subtle natural liquid attractor. I have used this method with some cheap shelf life baits as the re-hydrating dissipates some of the aftertaste of the preservative and the added liquids can make the bait more palatable This is definitely well worth considering on hungrier waters were bait costs need to be kept down, or on trips abroad.

Are there any down sides to these methods? Maybe… Your free baits will be a lot softer. They will not be hard enough to be put out with a throwing stick, and may well be too delicate to be catapulted more than 40-50 yards! There is also the problem of nuisance fish being better able to devour your freebies, too! Even soaked 20mm sized baits will be able to be broken up by tench and bream!

You will need to do some small test batches to find out just how your baits will behave. This will be true of the differing liquids too. Some thicker liquids might need to be further diluted [assuming they are water soluble] to ensure they penetrate to the core of the bait. Some bait may soften much more than others, and may actually break apart! Some may have active enzymes, and may start to float after they have been hydrated for a while. You should not just think about the re-hydrating time, but also the amount of time you will want your baits to be intact and on the bottom of the lake after re-hydration…

Something different!
There is plenty of scope for further experimentation. Nothing that you do [within reason] will be repellent to the carp so long as you are adding something that will add a smell/taste to the water and also be palatable to the carp. Have a mess about and maybe just the fact that you are doing something a little different to the rest of the flock of sheep might catch you a few extra carp.

The main thing you are trying to achieve is not putting the wiser, bigger carp on high alert and letting them know that you are fishing for them. Maybe you can make them think they are just finding an area that has been pre-baited a day or two ago, and all is now safe for them to move in with confidence and have a good feed!

Baitman
September 2011

Just a general question to those in the know... Rather than do an overnighter each week on one of my local waters I'm hoping to fish one of the Richworth Linear waters every other week on a 48 hour session. It would cost a lot more but I think it might be the challenge I need and will hopefully up my pb of 27lb. With the waters I fish close to home I'm always dropping in to add a little bait and speak to regulars to keep in touch with how it's fishing, and just wanted to know how you would approach and try to keep on top of a water that you arrived on cold every couple of weeks, could not bait up and did not know anybody? Many thanks, Shane.
Answer: Hi Shane, First of all I think I'm the perfect person to ask about all things Linear Fisheries, I've fished all of their waters for the last 8 years and faired rather well on all of them. The first thing you need to have is an open mind when your travelling down there as the whole complex is far too busy for you to pinpoint one particular water until you arrive and see who's where as they do get very, very busy at times, certainly the weekends. Sure you mention the cost of actually fishing the waters, but what price can you put on excellent fishing for some fantastic looking carp, I mean I used to scratch my backside in the North for mid 20's at best, when they are in abundance at times on most of the Linear waters.

Iain Macmillan with a nice Oxlease mid-twenty mirror carp

With regards to how I'd approach the Linear waters, firstly the old saying less is more applies here, simply fish for a bite at a time and top the swim up according to how many bites you are receiving. I normally start with say 20 spods on a spot, then if I get a bite I'll simply top it up with a further 10 spods to keep the fish interested. Alternatively, always keep your eyes peeled for what others are doing around you, and if they are all spodding with not much success, try the single bait approach, you'll be surprised how well it can work at times.

The same can be said for rigs, if all around are using a very standard coated braid rig then the wise old Linear fish will soon suss this out and learn to deal with the said rig, in this instance I'd try a chod rig for a couple of reasons; first it never tangles so you're 100% fishing effectively, secondly it's a great rig for single bait fishing, and thirdly its an extremely hard rig for the fish to deal with once they've taken it in.

So to summarise mate, keep your eyes open and be aware of all that's going on around you, try to be different at times, but believe me when they are having it they can be caught on a vast array of presentations. Good luck Shane, and if you have any other queries about anything whatsoever to do with Linear Fisheries, or the bait that will score well for you, don't hesitate to get back in touch with Jules and I'm sure he'll pass your details directly on to me.

Be Lucky.

Iain Macmillan
November 2010
Iain Macmillan currently holds consulting positions with Nash Tackle and Shimano, and in addition is now able to offer specialist one-on-one coaching sessions covering all carp fishing disciplines.
