Question: Dear Northwestcarp, I've been trying to use the lift rig method on my local carp water, just for something different. I can get it to work well in the margins but when I try to fish further out at around 20yards I can not get the float to set properly. Is the method only for very close in or am I doing something wrong? Would be grateful for any advice. Brian.
Answer: Hi Brian, Thanks for your question on the lift method. Like you I enjoy fishing the "lift", I've found that it does make a nice change to sit and watch the float. It's know as an old fashioned method, however it can be deadly and it works just as well as many very complicated modern rigs. It's a versatile method where various baits and hooking styles can be used, i.e. side hooked corn or worms directly on the hook or hair rigged baits including meat, maize or even boilies.
The lift divides opinion, I'll tell you what I think and you can make up your own mind. I've got to say that the lift works best close in because when it's fished at greater distance the waters tow can cause problems by dislodging the anchoring shot. Obviously the further out the float is fished the more tow will effect the rig. However, on the calmest of days there is no reason why the rig can't be used at greater distance but as you will know there are very few of these days around in our summer months. There can also be problems of using the method if the area of your swim that you have chosen has very soft or deep silt as it's hard to plumb up accurately.
The best way to fish the lift is to use a large waggler float that has a slim bristle tip. The float should be set by accurate plumbing and locked with the smallest amount of shot you can get away with. The weight down the line should be just enough to sink the float; you then adjust the depth so that the slim tip of the float is visible above the water. The float will take most of the weight of the large shot anchor so that when your quarry picks up your hook bait it will feel little of the weight of the shot, this displaces the float causing it to rise or lift. You should leave a short length of say 3 to 6 inches from your hook to your anchor shot.
The key to the method is accurate plumbing and using a large enough float. One idea that I have to admit to being show to me by a friend is a version of the lift. The method works really well in shallow marginal water. I would try to prebait an area that you know the carp often visit. You need to plumb up really carefully before you put the bait in. The rig you use is simple, a small pole float and a shot just big enough to sink it. Plumb up and set the depth to the anchor shot too shallow by a couple of centimetres, this will mean that your float is under the waters surface. Once you have baited up and you feel the fish are feeding confidently drop your rig in carefully and quietly, your float will disappear and only reappear once a fish has picked up your hook bait. This method works well for large carp because you only get to see your float, in other words getting a lift bite, when the fish has picked up your hook bait, if the rig is fished conventionally with the float above the water you often get indications and strike at line bites caused by several large fish moving around the baited spot. This will spook the fish out of the area and leave you picking up your rod and what's left of your reel after shouting "fiddlesticks!" and throwing it down in a fit of temper.
As I said this method divides opinion, I hope that my answer helps and you find success with it.
