Question: Dear panel, I've just started fishing a five acre lake with a low head of fish and low pressure. Just wondering what baiting you might use with now going into winter. Can't pre bait so torn between putting out a big bed of bait when fishing as they don't see that much, or very light baiting. Will be fishing 24hr sessions on a weekend. Many thanks, Steve B
Answer: Hi Steve, thanks for your question. As I'm sure you know winter fishing can be hard work, especially if there are only a few fish to go at. I would start by finding out as much as you can about the water. Use your marker rod and spend a good few hours getting a mental picture of the lakes undulations and depths before you start your winter campaign in earnest.
The fish won't necessarily be in the deepest part but having an understanding of the features can lead you to the fish. I've always found that winter fishing is 90% about finding where they are, as they don't move around as much they do in the warmer months. If you know of anyone who has previously fished the water in the winter try and pick their brains a little.
On warmer days have a look for any shallow sheltered corners where the sun stays longest, the sun will raise the water temperature by a couple of degrees and this could make for a good holding spot. In terms of baiting, I would stick to small amounts of winter friendly baits like low oil pellet and bird food boilies crushed up in a pva bag will be a good starting point.
"I would also try a high visibility pop up as my first approach"
I would also think about natural baits as these carp might not have seen boilies before, a few grains of corn or, if there aren't too many silvers in the water, maggots. I would stay clear of big beds of bait as the fish don't need to eat as much in winter due to their low metabolic rate. I would also try a high visibility pop up as my first approach, especially if the fish haven't seen this before due to low angling pressure.
In summing up I'd spend as much time trying to locate the fish and fish small amounts of bait. Once you are confident that you have found the winter whereabouts of the carp in your water then you can possibly put a little more bait in but always remember to be cautious as you can never take out what you've put in, and over feeding the fish will lead to dry nets and thoughts of taking up golf!
Good Luck!
