I was half way through my week of early shifts and was feeling pretty tired. An early night was in order to recharge my batteries. I reached for my phone to turn it off and as I picked it up, it began to ring. “Eh up tiger, fancy a week on Birch Grove” said an exited Andy, I didn’t need asking twice, Birch Grove the place I’d read so much about, no way, was this a wind up? Tales of the 30x30’s and 200x20’s all came flooding into my mind, although having since spoken to Birch anglers of old, the stock figures were, shall we say a little “enthusiastic” but having said that, the more realistic figure was still more than impressive and if I’m honest that was the main attraction.
It turns out two friends of Andy’s from another syndicate, John and Nigel had enjoyed the opening week there for a number of years, their two friends who usually accompanied them had decided to pack in fishing, they had asked Andy if he would like to come and also, if he knew of a suitable guy to bring along who wouldn’t upset the party, that person was to be me, so thanks again mate.
After being asked by the lovely Mary Paisley if we would mind being moved to the third week I was a little gutted but then reminded myself that “opening weeks” hardly ever fish as you expect them, the third week just may be the right one, they would have seen a bit of bait and a few lines by then so it all wouldn’t come as a sudden shock.
The long awaited day arrived (Saturday) I had pinched myself a dozen times, as by now I’d read Tim’s account of his awesome 8x30’s in a week session and that made me realise what a privileged position I was in. Andy and I met John and Nigel at the Whitchurch “little thief” (at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask when he robbed you, £10 for ham sandwich!) for a good feed up before we completed the journey to the lake. I was a little nervous of meeting John and Nigel as I was a keen whipper snapper on what was their “chill out” week away from reality. I shouldn’t have worried; we hit it of straight away and remain good friends to this day.
Nige led the way through the lanes until we arrived at the farm, he opened the gate and I caught a glimpse of the pool, but had to wait until we reached the caravan and parking area for a full, unhindered view. We gathered in the Caravan swim and looked out over the Lake. My first thoughts were stunning but it was also a duck pond, a little harsh perhaps but I had spent the past 3 years fishing Colemere so I guess it was in comparison.
It was decided that Andy and I would fish up the top end in “The Main Boards” doubled up, John and Nige would fish “The Compound swim”. We would swap swims at Wednesday dinnertime and then retire to the local pub for lunch.

In the Main Boards, Andy fished the right side to the pads and inlet and I chose to fish the open water on the left. Andy lightly scattered a few kilos of mixed size pellets and boilies along and into pads, area baiting if you like. I chose to just “trap set” and fish for a single bite at a time, as you can always put more bait in if needs be but you can’t take it out once it’s in. By late afternoon we were all settled and sipping our first can of Strongbow. After tea we were just cracking open another can when Andy had a screamer on his right margin rod. A short tense scrap produced a fish of 19lbs and we as a team were off the mark. The night was quiet but at first light Andy was away again, I sank the rod tips as he battled away. As I sunk the last rod, the tip began to lift up from the bottom, I looked up to see a huge patch of frothy bubbles over the spot, so wound down and hit it. I turned it away from the pads while Andy guided a large mirror into his net, I then passed him his other rod and he took over. After a few minutes a nice common joined its mate, in the net lay a 28.13 mirror and 29.7 common for Andy, what a brace.
Later that day I went on to stalk a 15lb common on float tackle from the Tag Barnes swim, up to Andy’s right. There were loads of fish on his side of the swim and he had said I should get up there and have a go for them, top man.

The night was again quiet but dawn brought lots of hot sun and the fish hit the surface to make the most of it. Andy tried all day to tempt them into taking a floater but did not succeed. I had a little cat nap and awoke just as he threw the towel in. The water was like tap water, clarity was at least 6ft and I felt a zig may be worth a go. I made the hook length up, so the bait would be about 10” beneath the surface, perfect mouth height for a big old “cruiser”. A mixer was hair rigged to a 6 super specialist with a 7lb hook length and a ¾ oz lead completed the light set up. Out it went about 20yds where a lot of fish had been patrolling. Before all the line could sink I was hitting into a fish, unbelievable! After a short scrap I banked an 18lb mirror.

At first light the following morning I awoke to a one noter on my left margin rod. I had taken Johns advice and under armed a bait to what he said was “a Video Fish banker spot” the biggest fish in Birch. I played it carefully just in case but knew it wasn’t a chunk. At 14lb it wasn’t quite what I had in mind and I admit I was a little disappointed. After returning the small common I looked over the warming, glass like water, and could just make out a dozen or so shapes beneath the surface at 20yds or so. I turned to the zig rod, it still had yesterday’s mixer “baked” onto the hair and the hook was good to go. I dropped the hook and mixer in a small cup to ensure I didn’t clip any trees or tackle behind me and gave the rod a firm cast, dropping the small lead down gently behind the fish and drawing the rig in, silently into the zone. Some of the mainline was still on the surface as I gently tried to sink it, but before I could, a fast take did the job for me, I was in. An unspectacular scrap gave me a beautiful dark 25.4 mirror and took me up a rank from being “pest controller”. Andy had never had any faith in zigs but all that changed in an instant because before the fish had swam out of the sling I was returning it in, Andy was in the process of tying up a long hook length, in record time I might add.
Before long the bottom bait rods were wound in and we fished with a single zig rod each. Andy was away within minutes and soon banked a dark 22lb common. After the pictures were done I put the fish back while Andy hair rigged another mixer. After a slightly “ambitious cast” over to my side of the swim he settled down and we cracked open a can each. Could zigs be the “undoing” of Birch I wondered, time would tell. The sunny day had turned into an overcast and muggy one, as the first spots of rain fell and began to disturb the lakes glass like surface, the water in the vicinity of Andy’s zig exploded like an under water mine had just gone off, at the same time his baitrunner went into melt down. He was in once more. This fish stayed deep and plodded around slowly and with purpose. As it neared the front of the swim but still on the deck I caught a glimpse in the crystal water “effin ell Andy, I know I know” he stammered. It was “Big Scales” a known 30. After a few tense moments near the pads, I scooped her up and at 30.12 she was Andy’s first 30.

He beamed from ear to ear as I clicked away with the camera, what a fish it was. Later that same day I banked a nice 23.12 common before the fish moved out of close range, we could have chased them with heavier leads and by casting further with the zigs but chose not to, and instead replaced our bottom rods for the night. But I did decide to fish a mid water zig on one rod, in an area John and Nige called “the activity area” a spot 30yds out and slightly left of the swim where on dusk, fish would roll and head and shoulder but would not pick up a bait. John and Nige had tried for years to tempt a fish from the localised spot with no success. I had tried a faithful single and then a light scattering of bait along with a standard bottom bait over the top, on separate nights (only one rod/bait in the zone at a time) but still no takes. For my last night a mid-water zig was going out there as I doubted the fish were going to the lake bed so 6ft up in 10ft of water it was to be.
I was just about to turn in, when Nige arrived in the swim, just into dark he had had a take and after a prolonged scrap he had banked a 33lber and would we like to see, too dam right. He really deserved it as he had lost his only two takes of the week so far. I clicked a few shots off and retired to bed.

At some very early hour I awoke to my mid water zig rod going for glory, it felt heavy from the off and fought hard for near on 15 minutes, thankfully she did not surface until she was beaten, which I was glad about, as I don’t like a big lead swinging around way up the line. As she went in the net I could just make out her tail fold over the draw cord, which told me for certain she was a big old beast. At 32.10 she was, and she was known as “Starburst” one of the lakes “A team”. We sacked her up until it got light and the rain stopped and then did a few piccies before packing up for a move, yes it was Wednesday and the week was flying by.
Starburst at 32lb 10oz
After moving camp down to the “Compound swim” we then headed off to the local pub for a pint and a meal. Upon returning we went about the task in hand of getting the rods out. Andy had the left side and fished to the snags, I again had the open water and a nice marginal bush to my right known as “the cattle drink bush” a spot which the big fish did enjoy hanging around. We fished 4 rods a piece and back leaded them, two of mine were fished on mid water zigs, 6ft and 3ft beneath the surface in 12ft of water, I would adjust their heights depending on lack of action.
At 6.40pm that evening Andy banked an 18lb mirror shortly followed by a fat 24lb common, both fell to single 10mm baits fished in the snaggy gaps in the trees to his left. He went on to catch a fish every night for the remainder of the session but all the bites came at exactly 6.40pm, very strange, his best was a dark brute of a mirror at 28.12, a known 30 but well spawned out.
The next morning I banked a 23.12 common on one of my zig rods (same fish as knappers 24.8 in his article) an hour later I was away on a bottom bait fished near the cattle drink bush. The fish fought very hard hugging the deep marginal shelf just to the right of the swim, every so often I got a glimpse of a stunning heavily scaled carp, eventually she tired and came to the surface where Andy waited with the net. She was almost fully scaled and weighed 25.8, the chaps voted her fish of the week.

As I returned the scaley beauty to her home, John appeared with big news. His “Video fish” banker spot had produced none other than, The Video Fish for the second year running and what an awesome fish it was, all 34.12 of it. John is one cool cookie, always very laid back and always a pleasure to be around, he deserved his 30. We had now all caught a Birch 30 in the same week, the lake was feeling very kind, a rare mood for the lake as we would find out in future trips. The day turned quite cool and went quiet for me, Andy had his 6.40pm bite, resulting in a 28.12 mirror which was a right result, it seemed we couldn’t go wrong.

Friday dawned a still and sunny one, I watched the mist steadily rise from the lake as I made my first brew of the day. The night had passed without action but late morning I hooked into a fish from the “white post” far margin, which unfortunately I lost a short way into the fight. While I put on a fresh hook length I scanned the water for movement. Up towards the centre swim on the lake, “The Helipad” I noticed a few fish rippling the surface close to the bank. We had purposely left the swim free off lines, so the fish had an open water “safe zone” instead of having to retire to the pads or snags for a break. A tactic several Birch regulars liked to employ. After 5 days the plan had come together. Having quickly discussed the prospect of a few easy bites on the zigs with Andy, it was decided in precisely zero seconds that we should get in there and catch them. He even postponed his mid afternoon dump! I was away within seconds of the zig entering the water and swiftly landed a nice 22lb common, while Andy took the photos, his rod ripped into life which turned out to be a tatty ancient looking 19lb, possibly a very old original “original”, a right character for sure. We refrained from casting back out amongst the fish and wondered up to John and Nige and insisted they get in there and have a go. John banked a 27lber within ten minutes but then the fish did the off.
The final night was a quiet one for us all, but Nige and John banked a couple of last gasp fish of 24lbs and 27lbs, then came the time we had been dreading, the departure time of 10am. As we tallied up the results for the week, for entry into the logbook we could hardly believe it, on paper it looked quite impressive. A total of 33 takes and 28 fish landed, and a 30 a piece, Andy had 10 fish, I had 9, and John and Nige had 9 between them, 12 of the carp caught came to zigs which were it has to be said, bonus fish. I’ve no doubt the clear water helped us no end, because as we were to find out, zigs would not be the “undoing” of Birch carp again. The water clarity was poor on our return the following year and zigs did us no bites what so ever. Never the less we had enjoyed one of the best Birch sessions ever.
We returned the following year, to a very different lake. The opening week group had banked one fish, the group after had blanked and now it was our turn. The fish were very active, a bad sign on Birch. Despite using zigs and almost every trick in the book, we had nothing. Eventually I had the only bite of the week, a 19lber from the Cattle Drink Bush on a single piece of maize that had been out for 3 days. Maybe Birch was not so easy after all, and the year before was just “perfect timing” with a spot of good angling. Despite how some articles read, don’t believe anyone who says Birch carp are easy prey. They were seriously riggy carp, occasionally they let down their guard but most of the time they are on edge. Only trying something they hadn’t seen for a while would be their undoing for a very short time. One example of the lengths sometimes required to catch these cagey carp, was when I soaked bait in lake water for 72hrs, I then cast a marker to a spot I had seen the only “possible” fish activity, four single bubbles just off the far bank shelf. I then cast a single washed out bait tight to the left of the float, then rowed out and dropped a PVA bag containing several whole fresh baits a few chopped ones and some small pellets a few feet to the right of the float to act as a decoy. The following morning, that rod, the one with a single washed out bait attached produced the only fish of the week.

Another year past by and with a few days to go before our annual trip I heard a rumour of a fish kill at Birch, I rang “Shoes” who confirmed that for the past two days all he had done was bury fish, big ones. And so we didn’t fish Birch that year. We kept our week and returned almost a year after the kill, but the place was certainly not the same, no lumps sat in the snags, no anything in fact. When a fish did show it was not even a low 20 but a low double and these “shows” were few. During my second years week session after the kill, I packed up half way through. I’d had enough. I could handle blanking for lumps, but not struggling for a bite from scamps. The magic had gone for me, don’t get me wrong, big fish are not the be all and end all for me, I take each lake and fish for what they are, its all relative, but the cost to fish Birch is high, and with doubles and a few 20’s only 15 minutes from home I felt £160 for a week was now too high a price for what the lake contained. It was now time for me to thank the carp Gods for my excellent and enjoyable times there and move on.
From what I read Birch is on its way back but I think it will take a long time to get near to what it was. It’s a stunning place to spend a week, I look back with mostly fond memories of my Birch Grove experiences, and realise how lucky I was to have fished there. Shine on.
