To start off with I will give you a brief background of myself and my fishing, past and present. I have been carp fishing for over 6 years now and I am still only 16 years of age. I live in the north west, which, lets face it, isn’t the first place you choose to go carp fishing is it? Over my carp fishing years I have been lucky enough to fish some really good venues and currently have a PB of 29lb 4oz. Since I cannot drive yet, I have to make do with fishing close to my home. This is the first problem, my local club has 2 lakes that have carp in them. One has over 350 carp in but they average 4lb in weight and only get up to 24lb. The second lake on the ticket is very under fished, as people don’t put enough time in and are very inexperienced. Recently I have concentrated my efforts on this lake more and more, as it offers a larger reward. The lake in question has a stock of possibly 20 carp and is 4 acres in size, the carp average 14lb and as far as I know, there are none smaller than 12lb. The lake has a lot of thick weed present and is very shallow over the most of it.
When I began my campaign in March last year, I didn’t really know what to expect. The weather was cold and really windy, and after a quick run around the lake, I decided upon the swim known as The Island, from here you can reach a lot of the lake. I tried everything I had with me; long hook links with pop ups, solid PVA bags and bottom bait rigs, none of which worked and so I went home with the intention of returning when the weather warmed up.
I returned at the end of May, after an unsuccessful 4 day session on Furnace Lakes, the weather was considerably warmer and the weed was in full bloom. On my first session back I was full of anticipation, just the thought of what these fish would look like in the clear water and what size they could be. Bearing in mind that a double figure carp from my area is a good fish, I just couldn’t wait! When I arrived the water was flat calm but there was no sign of a fish anywhere. So I decided to set up in ‘The Capsule’, which is so called because, when you put up a storm brolly you are encapsulated inside your own world. I cast out to the middle of the lake and sat back to wait events, nothing was forthcoming. By midday my friend Rob had turned up to keep me company, which was nice of him as it can get lonely at times. The weather changed dramatically after Rob came though, we got belted by heavy rain for the next 2 hours. This change of weather also changed the fish’s movements. As I looked across the lake I saw a large fish leap out in front of The Island swim. That was enough for me, so I wound in my right hand rod and smacked a single pop up towards the area. After a few hours with nothing over both of the spots, I went for a wander up towards ‘Matchmans’ where the best climbing tree is situated. Upon climbing the tree I caught sight of a reasonably large mid double common on the surface. Although I had seen this fish I had to pack up because of home commitments.
Even though I had seen a couple of fish on my last session, I still fished ‘The Capsule’ another 3 times before I realised that it was not the place to be. This is where my mind set changed, I thought since the lake was so shallow and clear, there was no point fishing in a swim without seeing anything first, as a result my next session was in ‘Matchmans’ so called because it is the peg used by the match anglers most often. I placed one rod over the area I saw the fish crash out and the other was positioned on the spot I saw the common. I sat there waiting for Rob to turn up when I had a brain wave; all I had tried was tight areas of bait so out came the throwing stick and I spread 20 chocolate malt and tiger nut boilies over each rod and fished a pop up of the same over the top using a multi rig. I was just finishing putting out the second rod when Rob turned up and since I was casting out he stole my chair. So I settled down on the unhooking mat, which is rather comfortable! Only an hour or so went by and then it happened, the Delkim ripped into life and the line melted off the reel, when I tried to get up, I fell over around the front storm pole and lifted into the fish. It never really did anything for 30 seconds, but then a single head shake and the hook pulled, I was gutted, I had lost my first bite from the venue. Nothing happened after that so before I left, out went 50 boilies over each spot.
I returned the following day and set up in the same swim, I baited up again and cast the rods out. Nothing happened until around 3pm when, with Mat and Rob watching, I got an absolute flyer on the right hand rod. This time I didn’t fall into anything but again, 30 seconds after I hooked it, the hook pulled. After such a ‘hectic’ 2 days Mat decided he would do the night on the ‘Island’, I told him to ring me if he had anything. At around 11:30pm I got a phone call and knew what the news was before I even answered. The call went something like this “Andy I cannot believe it, I have just landed a new PB of 16lb 14oz”. I congratulated him and went to bed and told him I would see him tomorrow.
I arrived to find mat in a bit of shock and excitement, having caught one he had also lost one in the early hours. The pictures looked awesome and it made the fish look huge, I was as excited as he was! I fished all day but nothing was to follow, something had to be done. I rang My God father and he brought 4 kilos of bait with him, we baited up the deepest part of the lake for 3 days then we fished it, and to our surprise the result was the same; no fish. The same happened for the next month which was really disheartening.
On the 22nd August things changed, the weather was really hot and there were around eight carp milling around in a swim called ‘Half A Tree’. For the first time that year the fish looked catchable and willing to show themselves. Mat was set up in ‘The Bricks’ on the other side of the lake and was oblivious that half of the lakes stock were in front of me. So as not to spook them, I cast 2 single pop up hook baits over the top of the fish, one was a pineapple and the other a milky toffee. The sun was still beaming down and the fish were loving it, to get a better look at the fish, I wandered over to the left of my swim. I was there for literally 5 seconds, when the receiver kicked into life and a massive bow wave left the swim; fish on! The fight was on, or so I thought, the fish was solid in weed but with gentle pressure it pulled free and swam towards me. There was a catastrophic amount of weed on the line so I rang Mat and he ran round. When he got there I walked backwards, he pulled the weed off the line and netted the fish in one movement. I let out a cheer and Mat shook my hand, first one in the bag.
While Mat looked after the fish I prepared the unhooking mat and weighing equipment. She weighed in at 14lb 3oz, which didn’t matter to me because of how stunning the fish was. After some pictures I returned her none the worst for wear and sat back, soaking up the last rays of the sun before going home with a huge smile on my face.
The morning after my result I got a phone call from Mat at 8.00am, he had bagged one before I had even got up! I arrived at the lake and found Mat tucked away in ‘The Bricks’ with a decent common in the net. At 15lb 1oz it was a great result for him and I was very happy for him. Incidentally, this fish provoked us to start naming the fish, that common was called ‘The Long Run Common’ because of how long it took Mat to stop it on his rods, the first one Mat caught was named ‘The Football’ because of its shape and my fish was named ‘The Stunner’ for obvious reasons.
I did a couple, more sessions in ‘Half A Tree’, which only resulted in spooking the fish away. I pulled off after that and fished the long, hard winter on an easier water, just to keep my eye in. I ended up catching regularly through the winter over there and only had one session on the Impossible Lake, which I blanked.
My return was dictated by an incident involving a non member on my winter water, I wanted to escape the pressure and get away from it all, so I rang Mat up and told him my plans, bearing in mind it was the middle of March and still freezing cold, it took a little persuasion but he finally said yes to do a session the following day. When I arrived there was a strong wind blowing across the lake so I decided to fish on the ‘Point’ which covers the same water as the ‘Island’ but with a longer chuck to the spots. Mat decided he wanted to fish from the ‘Flats’ which was opposite me. The morning passed without incident so I decided to wind in and have a social few hours in Mat’s swim. We chatted together, with the usual banter when out of the blue Mat’s left hand rod tightened up slightly. We looked round at the rod, when it screamed off at a rate of knots, Mat was so surprised to get a take in such conditions he paused for a second before lifting the rod. A solid resistance was at the other end, which wasn’t for giving in but eventually he overcame the fish and it hit the spreader block, followed by the obligatory cheer. The fish looked huge and we were surprised when it went 17lb 3oz on the scales. We took the pictures and returned the fish to the lake with its first mouth blemish treated with antiseptic. With the first capture of a carp from the lake that year coming to a single hook bait on a chod rig, I changed my approach to chod rig fishing only.
The next session was the following Friday, which was Good Friday so we had an extra day added to our 2 weeks off college. Knowing that all the fish Mat had caught came from ‘The Bricks’, I decided to fish there. I was also using a single hook bait on a chod rig on both rods, unfortunately this swim is particularly hard to get bank sticks into so I had to settle for just a front buzz bar and the rods pointing high into the air. Mat fished ‘Flats’ again so I did the usual and wound in during the afternoon and had a social, it was 4pm when I returned to my swim and recast the rigs to their spots. Nothing was happening so I packed away my right hand rod and was tying the strings of my holdall to it, when my remaining rod tore off leaving the typical bow wave on the surface. The fish fought really hard all the way in, but was netted by a panting Mat, after running round to me. It turned out to be ‘The Long Run Common’ which was down slightly down in weight at 14lb 7oz. Despite this I was still over the moon to have caught my first common from the lake.
My next session was on the following Monday, but this time me and Mat fished together on the ‘Flats’ which is the largest swim on the lake. I thought it unfair to fish on the left side of the swim where Mat’s spots were so I settled on the right side. We spent the day plotting, trying to formulate a plan for the warmer weather. Since all our bites have been coming around 5-6pm I decided to pack up at 8pm. At 7.40pm my right hand rod cast into a sheltered bay ripped off and the Delkim echoed around the still lake. I picked up the rod and it immediately felt really heavy and plodded up and down. When it came in close, we thought it could be ‘The Football’ which Mat caught last year, but as he netted it cheering we realised it was a new fish. We weighed her in at 15lb 7oz which made me really happy but it was also a stunning fish. We returned her to the lake with another cheer as she swam off safely.
After my success I was thinking the lake was easy, but I was wrong, as on my next session neither I nor Mat could muster up a result. The rest of the 2 weeks off just went by too fast and no more fish fell to either of our rods.
When I woke up the following Saturday I decided to go and watch my brother play football and then head over to the lake in the afternoon. As soon as I got there I knew where I wanted to fish; ‘The Island’. This peg would allow me to fish the very shallow water near to the new house. I set up and placed 2 single chod rigs in the shallows and waited upon events. At around 2pm, my left hand rod pulled up tight and I lifted into it expecting a solid resistance, instead I had a coot going ballistic on the surface over where my bait was. After this I thought I would check to see if I could spot any fish in my spot, when I got round to the banking parallel to where I had my rig, I came across 3 fish in the shallows so I decided to put 10 baits around the rod in the extreme shallows. At 4pm Mat turned up to have a chat and while he was there I got a screamer, talk about good luck! This fish felt smaller and when we netted it we realised it was the smallest one we have caught so far. Despite this the 12lb 4oz mirror was a stunning dark fish with massive scales and a large scar running along its flank on one side. We slipped her back and enjoyed the rest of the day on the lake, just perfect!
After the capture of the 12lb mirror I slowed down my assault on the lake, to date, I have yet to have catch anything else but hopefully I’ll be back on soon.
