After the epic battle with my first ever Carp from the Levenshulme Club Lake, my fire was well and truly alight, in fact it was a raging inferno. I couldn’t wait to get to grips with a few more of the angry beasts, I spent as much time as I could at the lakeside, come rain or shine I would be mooching around its tranquil reed fringed banks looking and learning about its piscine residents.
I was so keen, I think I spent more time there than at home and when I was at home all I did was daydream about being at the lake, it was an oasis in my otherwise boring urban life. I got to know quite a few of the old cloth capped regulars with their nicotine stained fingers, who mainly fished for the silver fish with gossamer lines and atom sized hooks.
The old boys often mentioned the rumours of a giant tackle smashing Carp that had evaded capture for many years, the fearsome legend always fought like something possessed and never gave up until its antagonist was beaten and his tackle trashed. Strangely, it was always someone else who had hooked and lost the great scaly beast and in the time I was there I never crossed its watery path, I suppose uncaught monsters are part of fishing folklore and keep us going back just in case.
For a time my preferred choice of quarry was the Carp but to be truthful, I sometimes got bored with the lack of action and fished for anything that came along, I had caught a few more mirrors which were all around the same size, mostly single figure fish around the five or six pound mark, but for some reason it became a struggle to get a bite never mind put a fish on the bank, this state of affairs lasted for quite a long period of time. My confidence slowly but surely hit rock bottom and my interest in the hard to catch Cyprinus Carpio waned, I had caught a big fish too early on in my quest for the mysterious Carp and I had now become disillusioned with the lake and its scaly residents, I had peaked and crashed in my Carping career, harsh reality had hit home, and so soon into my angling journey!
I had learnt a lot when I lost my Carp virginity all those months ago, that fish represented the first notch on a metaphorical bedpost, I would like to say that the imaginary bedpost was now a pile of sawdust, through notches for Carp and other equally enigmatic conquests but being the gentleman that I am I will say no more, other than “I wish”
With my confidence in tatters I started to make enquiries into other local lakes and ponds that were within reasonable travelling distance from my house, neither of my parents had learned to drive so I was heavily reliant on public transport, I have already mentioned a trip with my mate Graham to Roman Lakes, these trips became more and more regular as we grew older, I have to say that both Graham and I were very competitive and our fishing trips usually turned into hotly contested battles to see who could catch the most or the biggest Roach, Rudd or Perch from Romans well stocked backwaters.
I slowly but surely started to develop an interest in the competitive side of the sport and began to read up on match fishing tactics, mainly from the Angling Times newspaper which was in my opinion more match fishing orientated than anything else that was published at the time. I had previously read most of the specimen hunting type books from my local library, my favourite being “No Need To Lie” by Dick Walker, its magical artwork by Reg Cooke spoke volumes and gave Dick’s book a very atmospheric feel, but for now I was more interested in catching quantity rather than quality so more suitable reading material was required in the form of competition fishing books by Billy Lane and the like.
My change of direction or more accurately, temporary detour was probably because catching specimen sized fish was much, much harder than I had first thought. I admit to taking the easier option, the line of least resistance on the road to glory and fame.
I had by this time started to collect more and more floats in preparation for my match fishing career; my selection consisted mainly of handmade quills from different types of bird feathers for instance Crow and Goose, as well as quills from the Porcupine, some had cane inserts to make them more stable in the water, some had cork bodies and fancy whippings but all were works of art. I had several of each type but in different fluorescent colours in order to cope with changing light conditions. I had bodied and straight Wagglers, Stick Floats, Chubbers and more, I couldn’t resist buying or making floats and each time I entered a tackle shop I always came out with a couple whether I needed them or not. I was like a junkie; I needed my fix, which could only be satisfied by the purchase of another heavily varnished, mottle bodied float with a bright top.
I had access to a couple of local tackle shops that were reachable with a fairly short bus journey; I remember one being on the row of shops near to Mc Vites biscuit factory on Stockport Road, I can’t remember what it was called but the woman who owned it was a tad miserable to say the least so I usually avoided it like the plague and went to one near to the Belle Vue amusement park, called Arrowsmiths, I had to catch the number 53 bus from Dickenson Rd, Longsight which dropped me off not too far away from the shop.
Arrowsmiths was a real tackle shop, and not like the modern, sterile showroom type tackle shops you get nowadays, as you entered its dark, dusty interior your nostrils were assaulted by the pungent ammoniac aroma of sweaty maggots, quickly followed by the subtle scent of peppery Hemp boiling away in the background. Entering Arrowsmiths shop was like walking into an Aladdin’s cave, a treasure trove of all things fishy.
I remember that the shop had several, large bow fronted cases of stuffed fish that had gold writing on the glass, outlining the captors name, the weight of the fish as well as where they were caught, one case had a small shoal of massive Perch which I think were all around the three pound mark, they were set amongst a gravel bed, which had rocks and some dried plants decorating the background in a vain effort to portray a natural freshwater pond, but unfortunately the staged scene did not do the majestic creatures any justice.
My favourite though, was the largest glass case which held a vicious looking Pike with its mouth partly open exposing rows of razor sharp teeth, it must have been around twenty pounds in weight and was by far the biggest freshwater fish I had ever seen, I remember no matter where in the shop you were stood, its black glassy, Shark like eyes appeared to follow you and I felt a bit like its last fishy meal must have felt, uncomfortable!
On the shop counter were many jam jars full of cheap floats and disgorgers, the better more expensive floats were kept on glass fronted shelves behind the counter, along with boxes of Mitchell and Intrepid Black Prince reels, the selection of fishing line was nothing to write home about but I remember Arrowsmiths was the only place I could buy Platil Extra Strong monofilament a favourite of mine for years to come, it was a pre stretched line which snapped pretty easily if you weren’t careful but it was a lot thinner and more supple than the other available lines at the time, I could use four pound breaking strain which at a push might pass for two pound breaking strain or less. My hooks were bought in small square cardboard boxes about half the size of a matchbox, they were made by Mustad and came in packets of 25 or 50 dependant on what size you bought, I nearly always used size 16 eyed hooks as their pre tied spade end equivalent cost too much.
The shop floor had stacks of dark brown wicker baskets, the lids of which, when opened creaked like the doors of a proverbial haunted house. Wicker baskets came in all different sizes and had attached, a wide leather shoulder strap, no blue plastic seatboxes emblazoned in gaudy stickers in those days. You had to fashion your own comfort arrangements for these wicker basket by buying a square piece of thick foam and covering it in waterproof material before attaching it to the lid of your basket so that you could sit on it for hours without having a semi permanent woven latticework embossed on your backside.
Next to the baskets was a stack of rod holdalls, which were usually a drab brown or khaki colour, made from thick unyielding canvas with a leather base designed to stop your rods falling through the material should it start to rot, these holdalls when wet weighed a ton and took ages to dry out. The rods at the time were extremely heavy and made from high tech materials such as Spanish reed, fibreglass and split cane, there were even rods made from believe it or not tank aerials! Nearly all the rods had male and female brass ferules which were prone to sticking and were a sod prise apart.
Another important item of tackle sold at the shop was the fisherman’s umbrella, usually it was made from light green cotton which if you weren’t careful and packed it away wet, would find the covering had rotted and was quickly rendered useless, a sound profit making tactic if I ever saw one, they must have sold millions!
I remember at the time there were still a few old style brolly’s being sold that had two solid cane poles instead of a single tilting aluminium one, there was a brass adjustable bracket attached to the main upright pole that you stuck into the ground, the other central fixed brolly pole was then placed into the bracket which then allowed you to tilt the brolly to keep you out of the wind and rain.
I remember my mum buying me one of the first nylon brolly’s on the never never from my aunties catalogue, I think she paid about 50p a week for it. Anyway I eagerly awaited its delivery and upon its arrival I opened it up indoors and marvelled at its vast expanse, its 32 inch ribs would keep me nice and cosy on the bank, or so I thought. On its maiden voyage on a wet and very windy day I pulled the brolly from my rod bag and set it up to find that it appeared to have shrunk, with my kit and me crunched up under its tiny mushroom shaped canopy there was barely enough room to move without getting soaked, also I had neglected to bring any sort of guy rope to tether the bucking Fungi to the ground, so I had to sit under it with one hand gripped to the cold aluminium pole to stop it and me doing an impression of Mary Poppins. Boy was I glad to go home that day.
There was also a great selection of bank sticks on display, two types no less! the budget type were all the same size and made from cheap steel rod with funny V shaped tops covered in some rubber sleeving, these rod rests bent out of shape as soon as you tried to push them into the ground, affluent anglers bought the more expensive tubular aluminium rod rests with the threaded tops where you could screw on a rod rest which incorporated a line guide so that your butt ring (don’t laugh) indicator, dough bobbin or state of the art washing up bottle top in red or yellow could move up and down freely if you got a bite.
I reckon the old anglers of yesteryear would spin in their graves at the thought of today’s tackle prices, twenty odd pounds for a single stainless steel bank stick or five pounds for a pack of ten hooks! My first wage packet at the age of 16 was £11 for working a forty hour week, oh how times change.
By necessity I used to make a lot of my own tackle accessories, most of which fell apart or didn’t work very well, one such item was an electronic bite indicator that a relative helped me to make out of a small hinged cufflink box, it didn’t have a buzzer to alert me of a bite only a torch bulb which lit when the main line pulled up two plastic shirt collar stiffeners taped together and attached to an electric contact and an “Ever Ready” battery, I was very pleased with it and it worked perfectly in the comfort of my Tackle Workshop (Kitchen Table) the first time I used it was on a night session, it absolutely poured down with rain but it still indicated my first bite perfectly, not by lighting the now soaked bulb and circuitry but by being dragged savagely from the ground and tangling with my mainline resulting in it snapping! This with 10lb Platil Extra Strong wasn’t that unusual as it sometimes snapped if you looked at it the wrong way.
The home made bite indicator incident was sometime in the future, even before my Beige, Heron bite alarm had its first outing to King Georges Pool Altrincham, BJ alarms were just around the corner (by the way who thought of that name? or is it just my dirty mind) the rainy night in question was on Capesthorne main lake during a clandestine night fishing trip, but that is another story, so back to where I left off.
I usually bought a couple of pints of bronze maggots when I went to Arrowsmiths these maggots were later thought to be Cacogenic due to the chemical used to dye them and were banned from a lot of waters, when my mum found out about this, she in turn banned me from using them. At the time you could get the usual Red and White maggots as well as the tiny maggot called the Squat but I also heard whispers of Annatto’s and Gozzers. Squats didn’t really interest me as they looked too small to stick a hook into without them bursting their innards all over the place, but my ears twitched when I heard about Gozzers, they sounded like something secret and good, something that would help me catch more fish than anyone else, just up my street!
The “Gozzers” it turned out were maggots from the Greenbottle fly, apparently they were the Ambrosia (not the tinned rice pudding) of the maggot world and great skill and a degree or two in wizardry was required to obtain enough of the precious grubs to half fill a maggot box. Apparently they were on par with the legendary Wasp grub but you didn’t risk dying of Cyanide poisoning to get some, for those of you who are thinking “what is he on about” some matchmen used to obtain a cyanide based powder called “Cymag” this product was usually used by farmers to kill rats, it was left near the rats tunnels and when it got wet or damp gave off a poisonous gas with obvious results.
During the evening when the adult wasps had gone back to their nests for the night, keen or foolhardy matchmen would partially block up the entrance and then place the Cymag powder so that the gas would permeate through the nest and kill all the adult wasps, the next day the wasp nest would be dug out and all the grubs removed. I’m told that Chub often climbed up the riverbank to try and get at them such was their potency.
To try and breed your own Gozzers, first of all you needed to befriend an Italian butcher on a wet Tuesday afternoon wearing a red carnation and then if successful purchase from under the counter a fresh Bullocks heart, one that beat every so often was ideal as you could then guarantee its freshness, you then had to obtain an empty square biscuit tin or at a push you could use a round one, and lovingly cover the bottom of it with moistened Bran. I had enough trouble in trying to obtain the Bran, the only cereal sold in my local corner shop at the time was Kellogg’s cornflakes or Rice Crispies and those wouldn’t do, anyway I eventually got some Bran off my Gran (that rhymes) who unbeknown to me was suffering from a painful blockage of her intestines, commonly called constipation. I now realise why she kept bottles of Syrup of Figs all over her house and had the patience of a rabid Rottweiler, I think she liked me.
Anyway once you had all the above ingredients you placed the Bullocks heart in the left hand corner of the biscuit tin nestled lovingly amongst the moist bran and then........ the most important bit, you put the lid on, not fully but at a slight angle so one corner was open to the elements, once this was done you placed the tin and contents under a bush out of the sunlight, so as evening drew closer the bashful Greenbottle would stealthily make its way into the tin and without being watched by prying eyes would lay its eggs.
What a load of Tosh!
Firstly, where I lived we had a small backyard with six foot whitewashed walls surrounding it and the only greenery within five hundred yards was the moss that grew on the wall near our leaking downpipe, secondly have you ever seen a Bullocks heart? The one I was going to purchase was miles too big to fit in my biscuit tin, it was bloody enormous! Also the price the robbing, greasy haired butcher wanted for it was as much as two gallons of maggots would have cost!
At least I now had the secret recipe for “Gozzers” so a slight alteration to the ingredients was called for, one streetpecker pigeon that had been wiped out by a rusty Ford Anglia on the A6 would replace the Bullocks heart, I got some strange looks walking home with that bird I can tell you, come to think of it I had the same problem later on in life with some of the other birds I walked home with!
The biscuit tin and its macabre contents was secreted near to a pile of old furniture on the local croft where we used to have a bonfire and let off fireworks on Guy Fawkes Night, all that was needed now was patience.
About a week later I revisited the croft, the biscuit tin was retrieved from its hiding place amongst the mouldy furniture, the lid which had been held in its correct position with a half brick was removed and I peered into the smelly interior only to find, not fat wholesome maggots but minute scrawny squats, millions of them. All that was left of the pigeon was matted clumps of feathers and its skeletal outline; those squats were like starving piranhas. I booted the tin and its rancid contents into the pile of other rubbish and there ended my short journey into maggot breeding so it was off to Arrowsmiths to buy a pint or two of the usual.
I had started to hear about some reservoirs that were only a couple of miles away from where I lived called Debdale Park Reservoirs, so me and my brother Phil ventured deep into Gorton territory where the reservoirs were nestled, you have to understand that to venture from one rough district of Manchester into another was fraught with danger, it was scary then as most lads our age went to schools local to where they lived and knew each other if not by name but by sight so an “outsider” if spotted could become an easy target if he wasn’t careful, we did our best to blend in and tried to avoid confrontation if at all possible.
There were three reservoirs at Debdale, the upper, and the lower which were the largest two and a smaller horseshoe shaped one called Lawrence Scotts which was linked to the upper reservoir by underwater archways. I imagine that during Victorian times there had been a stream or brook running down a small valley which had been dammed at two levels to form the reservoirs, there was quite a drop down from the dammed upper reservoir to the lower with a footpath or lane between the two, the lower reservoir was fed by an overflow and stream from the upper, this in turn had a valve type contraption near to a small pier at its dam end which regulated its maximum capacity.
The lower reservoir was more popular for fishing as it had a few small bays in which you could hide from the ever persistent strong breezes that plagued the waters, the upper was more scenic for want of a better description as it had a golf course nearby and looked like countryside, Lawrence Scotts was by comparison more intimate but all I ever caught from there were Sticklebacks which were voracious, although Scotts as it was known was capable of producing the odd big Tench but I never witnessed any being caught.
Debdale like the Levenshulme Lake had its resident legend in the form of a giant Catfish and I think most people at the time had been told stories of it and how it had been hooked and lost amongst the many chain anchored buoys that were bobbing about in the middle of the lake, the thought of such a beast made you think twice about rinsing your hands of groundbait in the margins, just in case!
You could get cheap day tickets from the bailiff on the bank, but my dad had bought me and my brother Phil two club books each, these clubs I seem to recall were Northern Anglers and County Palatine but I can’t remember which book enabled us to fish Debdale, we were also in possession of North West Water Authority rod licences which I remember were regularly checked by Adolf the bailiff, who considered all three reservoirs his own personal property.
In those days you could get your fishing licence from designated tackle shops, they came in large books that had numerical carbon copy pages that were filled out by the shop owner, I think this prevented back dated copies being sold to people who had been caught by the bailiff without a licence as the books would be checked in the event of someone being prosecuted.
Phil and I had done a bit of homework and found out that the most popular method on Debdale was float fishing a couple of rod lengths out where it was about ten or twelve feet deep; the banks of the reservoirs sloped down fairly steeply and were built out of stone blocks similar in style to a drystone wall which caused problems when you tried to ledger as the lead usually rolled down one of the gaps between the stones and was lost forever. I never plumbed the depth but after speaking to some of the regulars I was told that it was about thirty to forty feet deep in the middle and I would be wasting my time ledgering there.
There used to be matches fished on there now and again and some good nets of large Roach and Perch were caught by the most skilful anglers but generally it was a hard place to fish probably due to the water clarity and also the depth you had to fish. I heard one day that Kevin and Benny Ashurst the famous father and son matchmen who dominated the North West match circuit in the 1970’s had fished there a few days beforehand and had taken over forty pounds of Roach from a peg I had fished often but had never had a bite from!
I used to fish Debdale quite a lot and in all the times I fished there I never had any bother from the local lads, the ones who fished there seemed friendly enough and I was soon on nodding terms with most of them, I was by now catching fairly regularly but it was very hard going, I couldn’t get to grips fishing the depths I had to fish in order to get a bite. I hadn’t learnt about the sliding float technique yet so I started ledgering out of desperation. I immediately started getting a bite a cast but on striking found that I was snagged and inevitably lost a lot of tackle as well as fish. I was fishing a very light lead and a swingtip indicator using three maggots as bait, it eventually dawned on me that I was getting a lot of bites on the drop so adopted a cast out count to twenty then strike approach but this method was very hit and miss, I needed to have a think about the problem as I was by now getting annoyed with myself.
It was while I was at home reading one of my match fishing library books that I had a Eureka moment, I was reading a chapter on swimfeeder fishing on rivers as I had planned in the near future to embark on a Sunday coach trip to fish a match on the Trent organised by I think Fairey Aviation which was an engineering firm near to Mc Vities biscuit factory Heaton Chapel, anyway I suddenly thought that if I cast out a large swimfeeder at Debdale it would probably roll down the sloping sides but might not slip into one of the gaps between the stones!
I couldn’t wait to test my theory and on my next trip to Debdale I was armed with half a dozen of the largest blockend feeders I could buy, I thought to myself ”I’m going to murder them” Just prior to my first cast I suddenly had the uneasy feeling that the whole set up felt a little heavy, I faced the water and had a mental picture of where I was going to cast to, as I heaved the swimfeeder towards its destination I realised that it had taken on a trajectory I hadn’t intended it to take. The feeder flew about fifty feet into the air and landed about two rod lengths out with a loud splash, it had snapped my line on the cast.
Forty five minutes later I was on the bus home in a foul mood having lost all my swimfeeder’s either through my line snapping or through them getting caught between the stones, so much for my theory. I had just reached my home stop when I thought “make some bigger ones” and whilst you’re at it” get some stronger line you prat”
To cut a long story short I eventually managed to get some thin black plastic sheet and fashioned some larger feeders by stapling together the tube shapes I had made, I didn’t have a drill so heated up a nail and poked some holes in the tubes so at least they looked like swimfeeder’s, I also bought some heavier Platil Strong line in 8lb BS. I also dispensed with my swingtip as it sometimes tangled my line on the cast as it flipped about on its flimsy rubber tubing hinge that connected it to my rod tip.
I couldn’t make the end caps for my home made feeders so instead used stodgy groundbait to block the ends up and stop the maggots from falling out on the cast. On my next trip to Debdale, I cast out my feeder with trepidation, fully expecting it to fly off like all the others I had previously lost, but this time it went miles and when it hit the water it was still attached to my line “Come on my son” I left my bail arm open and after what seemed an eternity my line stopped coming off the spool, I tightened up and clipped a Fairy liquid bottle top to my line on an eight inch drop.
Fairey Liquid bottle tops by the way, were cutting edge bite indicators at the time and mums and wives up and down the country were exasperated when they went to wash the morning breakfast dishes only to find that the washing up liquid bottle top had mysteriously disappeared again. Within seconds the yellow bottle top was twitching and lifting an inch or so, then all of a sudden it steadily rose upwards until it could go no further, I struck and felt a heavy weight on the end struggling to put some distance between us.
I gently played to the waiting net a pristine Roach of a size I could only dream about; it was massive and must have weighed at least two pounds, its bright, blood red fins contrasted with its perfect, burnished silver scales which glittered in the afternoon sun, I was dazzled by its beauty.
I had caught some fair sized Roach at Roman Lakes but they were always in a tatty condition with their torn mouths and split fins, evidence of bad handling and mistreatment. This fish was so perfect in every way that I felt privileged to have caught it and had it been the only one I caught that day I would have been more than happy. This emotion was in stark contrast to my feelings the day I caught my large Levenshulme Roach when I was after Carp; it seems I was growing up!
I went on to catch many fish that day, Roach, Rudd and Perch big and small all graced my landing net, I even had a couple of Rainbow Trout which I hadn’t realised were in there but the highlight of the day was my first fish, that immaculate Roach, nothing could top that!
