I started my fishing apprenticeship as a young boy growing up in Manchester, my dad used to take me and my younger brother Phil to Platt Fields Park Lake on a Sunday afternoon to join the many other dads and lads in their quest to capture as many red bellied Sticklebacks as possible. We were armed with the obligatory net and cane and a glass jar with a string handle tied around the jar neck, I recall that we had a bigger jar than most of the other intrepid hunters, which when full of water made it too heavy for either of us to carry so my dad had the job of bringing home our catch for us to proudly show off to my mum and impressionable younger sister.
Platt Fields was okay for a catch of Sticklebacks or even the odd Gudgeon which occasionally ended up in the net, but I longed to go fishing with a proper rod and line. My dad was born in Ireland at a place called Thomastown, and every year we went over there to my Gran’s house for our two week summer holiday, I loved going to my Gran’s because her back garden backed directly onto the river Nore. The Nore was a wide fairly slow moving river and was then and probably still is regarded as a game river, I have an old photo of my Granddad with a very large Salmon which he caught from his back garden.
My two week holiday was mainly spent Eel fishing from the back garden using a borrowed split cane rod with brass ferules which had a bend in the top section and an ancient fixed spool reel that was filled with thick wiry nylon line which had a mind of its own and on occasions seemed possessed as it sprung from the spool to form great big knots which kept me amused for hours as I tried to untangle them, but mostly I gave up and cut the line and retied it using a schoolboy join anything knot. My brother and I often caught the odd Flounder whilst Eel fishing, which had the local name of “Fluke”, in the evening we were allowed to go fishing with my uncles precious Fly rod. I couldn’t cast very far using his fly reel so it was replaced with the easier to use fixed spool reel with the springy nylon , on which my uncle added three of his lovingly tied Greenwell’s Glory flies and a large water filled bubble float which was tied onto the end of the line to form the casting weight.
A mutual agreement between me and my brother Phil meant that we shared the rod and had five casts each before grudgingly handing it over, I being older took full advantage of my superior position in the brotherly pecking order and always added another cast or two to my go, much to the annoyance of Phil who risked a ducking if he moaned too much.
On one of our evening forays we were allowed to go and fish a stretch of river about a hundred yards downstream from my Gran’s house which was situated behind a local pub called “The Salmon Pool”. We had managed to catch several Brown Trout to about a pound in weight, Phil was beating me by a couple of fish which annoyed me so I told him that I was going to keep on casting until I had caught up with him, I was surprised that he didn’t really object to this cunning plan to take the lead in the Trout competition so I gave the bubble float an almighty heave towards the far bank and let it slowly drift downstream towards the nearby town bridge and waited for the rod tip to signal a take.
The take when it came almost ripped the rod from my hands, it formed an alarming hooped shape and I could hear noises coming from it that convinced me that it was about to explode, I quickly came to the conclusion that I had hooked a stray submarine.
I didn’t know what a clutch was, never mind how to adjust one, but line was slipping off the spool steadily with the odd bump as the large knots I had previously tied on the line travelled through the rusty rod rings. I naively leant into the rod in an attempt to haul whatever was on the end of the line towards my side of the river but this just made the unseen monster even more annoyed and it powered off downstream and under the main bridge arch, the last thing I remember is feeling the line grating on something and then it going slack.
Tears of disappointment filled my eyes but I was quickly brought back to reality when I realised that I had lost nearly all my line as well as my uncle’s flies and bubble float. I need not have worried as the tale of the one that got away was more important to him than a few bits of lost tackle.
I will now jump forward a few years, my brother and I had a nice surprise when we returned home from school one day, there waiting for us was a fishing set, our first proper fishing rods and reels.
The “Junior Kit” was bought on the never never from my mums catalogue and comprised of an eight foot, two piece solid fibreglass rod in a fetching green colour and a Black Prince reel loaded with thick nylon line. I was over the moon I didn’t care that the rod would be more suited to fishing off Blackpool pier, it was a top class bit of kit as far as I was concerned, and all I needed now was some terminal tackle.
My uncle who lived in Foulridge a village near Colne in Lancashire, used to fish his local reservoir years before but had by now given the sport up to concentrate on his musical talents. He was my fishing hero when I was younger, when we visited him for the weekend he used to take me fishing with him and answered my many questions about fishing as he smoked his pipe with the sweet smelling tobacco.
I wrote him a letter asking him if he was likely to sell any of his unused tackle, neither of us had a phone in those days so correspondence between us took a few weeks before he eventually turned up at my house with a green army type satchel which was full of floats, ledgers and other assorted fishing paraphernalia which to a budding angler was a treasure trove.
I was so pleased with what he had brought me that I was almost too scared to ask him how much he wanted for it just in case I hadn’t enough money to pay for it, but he saw an anglers passion in my eyes and refused any money, not only that but he suddenly produced from thin air a brown cloth bag which he handed to me with a great big smile on his face.
Upon opening the bag I was rendered speechless, as I took from its oily interior a shiny black Mitchell 300 reel, fully loaded with new 6lb line and a shiny spare spool. I had died and gone to heaven. I was now almost ready to embark on the long road to becoming a real fisherman. I sat for hours winding the handle and opening and closing the bail arm which snapped shut with a resounding click.
I had by this time read nearly all the crusty old fishing books in the local library and had even started buying Angling Times, which some of you will remember was a massive broadsheet type newspaper which contained information mainly on match fishing, it had articles on angling gods like Kevin and Benny Ashurst, Ivan Marks, Billy Lane and showed pictures of hundreds of match men fishing the National Championships on mysterious rivers called the Welland and the Nene all a million miles from where I lived in Longsight, Manchester but I wanted to be there and catch those big Roach and Bream.
I had read and soaked up all the information I could and all I needed to do now was put my knowledge to good use. The first fishing trip with my new gear was planned like a military manoeuvre; the venue was a couple of bus rides away to Marple, the home of the famous Roman Lakes.
Me and a mate Graham who was on a similar level of keenness to me got off the bus at Marple on a warm Saturday morning in June and managed to get directions to the lakes, we meandered down the rough road for what seemed like miles, we were now in real countryside with hills and unspoilt views! Both of us eagerly anticipating how we were going to catch loads of two and three pound Roach and Rudd and maybe a couple of big Carp as well, how innocent we were!
As we neared the famous lakes, the first section we came to was the fenced off area near to the backwater which was to our left, there was a hole in the chain link fence that we climbed through, I was
absolutely speechless, not by the solitude and raw beauty of the place but by the amount of anglers that were fishing there, it seemed as though there were thousands of them all fishing shoulder to shoulder all along the backwaters and also around the whole of the main lake.
Had we stumbled upon a National Championship? Was I having a nightmare? I couldn’t see any free bank space, I couldn’t face the walk back up the steep road to Marple so we pressed on towards the Cafe where we bought our day ticket from a very helpful bloke (not) and then spent the time it took us to drink a large mug of hot tea reading the rules on the back of the ticket. I was going to ask the helpful bloke if smiling was allowed, but one look at him made me realise that it wasn’t.
Whilst waiting for a couple of pegs on the backwaters to become free, we had a look at the old Victorian amusements which were there, one of the ancient machines was an electric shock machine with two brass handles which you had to turn, as you did so you received a shock, the power of which was displayed on a “Voltmeter” it was funny but it hurt and to think we paid an old penny for the pleasure!
Graham and I eventually managed to squeeze in on one of the backwaters and as I unshipped my green fibreglass rod from its rod bag, I could feel eyes staring at me as I tackled up and thought that I could hear the odd snigger, it was only then that I realised how short my rod was in comparison to everyone else’s, I have been told that size doesn’t matter (not very often) but on this occasion it would appear that to catch fish a minimum of twelve foot is the ideal length for a fishing rod, undeterred we commenced fishing.
The backwaters at Roman Lakes in those days were a lot clearer then than they are now and when you threw in a handful of maggots, massive shoals of roach soon cleared them up. Graham and I were closely observed throughout the day by a line of professional looking anglers sat on the opposite bank to us; the funny thing was that although they looked the part they didn’t seem to be catching much but neither were we.
After observing the Roach constantly clearing up handfuls of maggots we soon realised that our Porcupine quill floats riding two inches out of the water coupled with size eight Eel hooks might be the reason for our lack of success. We found a packet of size sixteen hooks to nylon in my army satchel and we started to experiment, we dispensed with the large Porcupine quill float and replaced it with a used matchstick which was positioned two feet away from the, in our eyes minute hook.
The sequences of events now was, throw in a handful of maggots then flick the float out over the top of them and wait, but we didn’t have to wait long as the matchstick float was quickly submerged by a hungry six inch Roach. I don’t think my solid fibreglass rod was tested by its manic underwater zig zagging in fact the rod didn’t even slightly bend with some of the bigger fish we caught that day such was its stout unyielding design.
Four hours later we were out of maggots and we had caught in the region of a hundred Roach, Rudd and Perch, it was just as well that the maggots had all been used because we were also down to our last size sixteen hook, some of the much larger fish we had hooked but couldn’t control, escaped taking our precious hooks with them.
Our first proper days fishing had been a complete success but the most satisfying part of the day was when one by one the professional looking anglers on the opposite bank came over to chat with us and ask us about our successful method.
One thing that we discovered that day was that after a while the matchstick we used as a float got waterlogged and started to slowly sink at the same rate as the maggots, so in preparation for our next visit Graham and I spent hours collecting used matches chopping off the burnt bit and painting the small tip sections in different colours before varnishing them to stop them taking on water and sinking. We ended up with a collection of about a hundred or so matchstick floats which we would often swap at Roman Lakes for maggots in the event that we ran out of bait, sometimes we experimented with the Kraft Cheese slices that were sold at the Cafe by the cheerful bloke; he used to cut a full packet into four and then sold the quarter sections for about 25p each (In new pence) daylight robbery!
That’s just reminded me, once on a red hot Summers day I had run out of lemonade and asked the cheerful bloke for a drink of water but I was told that it would cost me 20p, as I only had my bus fare left I had to decline and spent the rest of the day dreaming of unlimited glasses of cold lemonade loaded with ice cubes.
It was whilst experimenting with pieces of Cheese slice moulded around the hook that I started to catch much bigger Roach up to around the pound mark but every now and then I was left a quivering wreck when a much larger unseen fish took my bait and powered off, on an unstoppable run leaving me with my six pound main line flapping in the breeze. I had briefly encountered the mysterious Carp that the strange, unfriendly men on the main lake fished for.
These enigmatic anglers gave off an air of superiority and wisdom that prevented mere mortals like me from even looking at them never mind asking them if they had caught anything. I was intrigued by both the Carp and its hunters, I had hooked quite a few Carp on the backwaters but had not yet managed to see one let alone land one.
I was in awe of the power of the monster fish I had hooked and lost, this respect for big fish had first manifested itself with the large, angry, unseen leviathan that had scared me back in Ireland years before, and again more recently at Roman Lakes when I’d hooked and lost angry Carp whilst Roach fishing. I was slowly but surely getting the big fish bug, its virus would affect my life for ever more.
I had access to a local club water which according to rumour was full of Tench, a fish I had only seen in books and magazines but not in real life, it was a fish that I thought I would have a chance of landing if I was lucky enough to hook one, a perceived stepping stone to ultimately catching a Carp, the fish of my dreams.
The water in question was run by Levenshulme Anglers and was situated near to the border of Reddish., the lake a veritable Oasis in a harsh scrubby wasteland which had once been used as a refuse tip during Victorian times, the evidence of which lay in the many tunnels and pits dug by local youngsters in their attempts to recover old glass Lemonade bottles with marble stoppers and heavy pot Ginger Beer bottles.
The lake itself was completely fenced off to prevent poaching and an entrance key for the substantial entrance door was issued along with my first club membership book. I was so excited at the prospect of catching a specimen fish from the lake.
I had heard a lot about the water but had never seen it up close, I had only managed to peer through the bindweed entwined perimeter fence and it looked to me like paradise. On the night before my first trip to the new lake I couldn’t get to sleep I was so excited, I felt like a child on Christmas Eve. I had sorted out my fishing tackle several times during the day, tackle which by now included a new fangled combination rod; this was a brown twelve foot fibreglass rod with two butt sections and four different top sections which varied the length and action of the rod, a Jack of all trades type of rod. I still had my precious Mitchell 300 reel and had also acquired a large foam topped wicker basket to sit upon, also my float collection had grown somewhat and I now proudly displayed them in a homemade wooden tackle box that had split foam strips stuck to the inside lid, that my best floats nestled into.
I had decided to leave the maggots at home and concentrate on using Cheese as bait in my quest to capture my first Tench, I knew that if I was to catch a Tench I would probably have a very long wait and the decision not to bring maggots with me would prevent me from giving up on the Tench and having a go for the easier silver fish which were there in numbers. I couldn’t wait until tomorrow came. My alarm clock wasn’t needed as I had been awake for hours waiting for its tinny bell to sound, my bedroom ever so slowly changed from pitch black to a lighter shade of grey, I quietly got out of bed and made my way creakily downstairs to grab a quick bite to eat. I then collected all my gear and jumped onto my rusty bike and cycled the ten minute journey to the lake, cycling along deathly silent streets which were patrolled by the local feline mafia en route home from a night’s mouse hunting.
I quietly opened the heavy door that gave access to the lake and drank in the heady atmosphere, the lake was roughly square shaped and nearly all the pegs were set amongst great big swathes of Yellow Flag Iris, if you were sat in one peg you couldn’t see the person in the next peg which gave an illusion of total solitude.
I didn’t need the illusion of solitude as I was the only person there or so I thought. The air was almost still and great wisps of white mist gently curled their way like ghosts along the flat water surface, which was occasionally dimpled with gentle kisses from the resident Roach and Rudd.
I quietly put my tackle down on the dew damp grass and chained my bike to a nearby sapling, I then noticed a large swirl halfway down the left hand side of the lake near to where the Flag Iris beds seemed thickest, as I concentrated on the area of the swirl, a large brown back broke the water’s oily surface without making a noise and then disappeared leaving only ripples as evidence of its existence.
I made up my mind there and then on the area I was going to fish, picked up my gear and quickly set up in the nearest peg to where the fish had shown. I was going to ledger cheese wrapped around a size ten Mustad, eyed hook, my half ounce Arseley bomb was stopped twelve inches from the hook with a BB shot. My bite indicator was a yellow, washing up liquid, bottle top. I sat down on my creaky basket and awaited the bottle top to signal a Tench bite, I spent a few minutes rolling small cheese balls and flicked them twenty feet or so towards where my baited hook was resting on the lake bed.
After about an hour I noticed that my bottle top was trembling and rising a centimetre (or the imperial equivalent) or so and then dropping back to its original position, I knew that I was going to catch a Tench I had a feeling in my water. Suddenly the bottle top which was dangling eight inches under the butt ring suddenly smacked into the rod with a resounding crack which made me jump, the rod tip pulled around to the right as an unseen scaly monster made its bid for freedom.
As I pulled into the fish I was surprised by how much my rod bent, I had been used to the poker rigid, solid fibreglass rod that I used at Roman Lakes. The fish I was attached to put up a good fight but under constant pressure it slowly allowed itself to be guided towards me and my awaiting net. As it was drawn nearer I saw that it was a bright silver colour, tinged with red. I was instantly disappointed that the very large Roach weighing well over twelve ounces wasn’t a Tench. To my shame I did not appreciate the beauty of that fish and after unhooking it I quickly slipped it back into the water such was my haste to get my baited hook back out in order to catch a real fish, a Tench.
As I dried my hands, I suddenly had the uncomfortable feeling that someone was watching me, the Sun hadn’t risen properly and the atmosphere was decidedly spooky, I constantly looked around me just to make sure that there wasn’t a mad axe man waiting to do me in. I had just cast out to the same area where I had caught my Roach and was about to sit down when the words “You’re casting too far out” almost caused me to have a heart attack.
With my heart trying to thump its way out of my chest, I spun around wide eyed and opened mouthed to come face to face with a scruffy old man, about seventy years old, dressed in a tattered army overcoat and wearing a ragged tweed hat. “You’re casting too far out” he repeated before I could say a word, I then realised that I was holding my breath. I managed to gasp the word “Oh”, he then said “I haven’t seen you here before, I’m Jack the bailiff”
I, by now had established that he wasn’t a ghost and although my legs were still shaking and my heart was beating like a piston, we started chatting about the lake and its inhabitants. It turned out that he had arrived about an hour before me and was fishing five pegs to my left, he only realised I was there when I caught my Roach and had watched me land and return it, he said that any one of the regular matchmen would have been proud of such a fish.
I mentioned that I had hoped for a Tench as I hadn’t caught one before, he said that everyone fished too far out and if I wanted a big Tench or a Carp then I should fish right at the base of the Flag Iris using a float for indication rather than a ledger. I thought to myself that he was talking rubbish, what was the point of having a twelve foot rod and then to fish so close in, half the fun was casting out towards the horizon!
I didn’t take his advice that day nor did I act upon it for quite a few weeks after, mainly because I thought that you had to fish far out for the bigger fish, the more I visited the lake the more frustrated I got, although I caught lots of Rudd, Roach and the odd Crucian I drew a blank with my Tenchy target.
One day I was at a loose end, and ended up going to the lake just to have a walk around it, I discovered that the only Angler there was Jack who was sat quietly watching his red tipped quill float which was positioned right at the base of the adjacent Flag Iris stems, we got chatting, I had briefly spoken to him on other occasions but because we were both busy with our fishing we didn’t really chat for long just a brief exchange of pleasantries.
Jack was the proverbial font of all knowledge; he could talk about anything and everything, he told me tales of his time in the Army and of travelling the world, but it became obvious that his passion lay in nature and Carp fishing. Whilst I sat nearby watching his motionless float, he suddenly stopped talking and hovered his gnarled hand over his rod’s cork handle, my gaze on his float intensified, but to my eyes nothing had changed, suddenly the float lifted a half inch out of the water and almost instantly Jack struck, “Carp” was the only thing he said !
A massive boil disturbed the placid surface of the water causing the Flag Iris stems to rock gently in its wake, the clutch on Jacks reel ticked away as line was slowly but surely taken from its spool. My heart was beating quickly with excitement, Jack bent down low, his knees clicking loudly as he did so, he was calm and collected in the battle with his as yet unseen quarry, I on the other hand was terrified that the fish would come off like all the Carp I had hooked and lost at Roman lakes. After what seemed like an eternity the Carp gave up on its bid for freedom up and down the margins and let itself be led like a puppy into Jacks awaiting net.
The mirror Carp was gently placed on the thick grass at the back of Jacks swim (no unhooking mats in those days) I watched as the hook was removed from within its cavernous mouth and whilst the fish was still in the wet landing net a set of Little Samson spring scales were hooked into the mesh and a weight of seven pounds was recorded. Jack said that I could put the Carp back if I wanted to, so I peeled back the wet, coarse net that covered the fish’s muscular body and gently ran my fingers along its smooth flank, several large penny sized scales were dotted along its shoulders, it was beautiful. I gently lifted it out of the net and carefully took it to the waters edge; it must have anticipated freedom, because as I lowered it into the lake, a powerful flick of its tail splashed cold water all over my face and made me laugh out loud.
I stayed with Jack until he packed up for his tea and helped him to land four more Carp, the biggest of which weighed just over eleven pounds, if I wasn’t “hooked” on Carp fishing before I certainly was now.
I had watched and asked, and watched and asked some more until my head was bursting with snippets of Carp related information and tactics. Jack had been fishing the lake for years and knew every inch of it, he knew its moods and could read it like a book, the information he freely gave me was soaked up like a sponge, he was a true Angler who was responsible for setting me off on the road to becoming a Carp Fisherman.
That Summer I put all I had been shown into practice and spent as much time as I could at the lakeside in an attempt to put my first Carp on the bank, it wasn’t as easy as Jack had made it seem. I was now fishing the lift method, and understood its mechanics; I also fished as close as I could to the bankside foliage just as Jack had done. The Cheese hookbaits had been replaced with small cubes of Spam luncheon meat secured on the size eight Mustad hook with a small blade of grass pushed through the bend to stop it coming off as it was flicked out and gently reeled towards the Iris stems.
My first Carp was a baptism of fire, I was sat watching my float, waiting patiently for it to slowly lift as a Carp gently took the bait and lifted the BB shot from the lakebed. I had been watching it for hours without so much as a tremble to arouse my interest, I had decided to have a sandwich and a cup of Coffee, and with a hot Coffee cup in one hand and a half eaten egg and cress sandwich in the other the inevitable happened.
Not the gentle lift I had anticipated, the float just disappeared instantly and my rod hooped over savagely to the right and then jumped from its rod rest in an attempt to follow the Carp in its dash for freedom. Coffee and sandwich went flying as I grabbed the rod butt before it disappeared into the lake, I took hold of the cork handle and held on, the clutch screamed out in agony as line was ripped from the spool, spray flew everywhere as I lifted the rod out of the water and tried to regain my composure which had been shattered by the event.
The fish was an animal, it took complete control of the battle and gave no quarter, I was a bystander who watched it do whatever it wanted, I was helpless and hopeless, all my theories and plans went out of the window I didn’t know what to do with it. I could bully Roach and Rudd to the net with ease and sometimes with contempt but this fish commanded absolute respect, unreservedly.
I had resigned myself to the fact that I was again going to lose the one sided watery battle and waited for the fish to gain its freedom, when it suddenly dawned on me that the Carp wasn’t making such long runs and was now trying to bury its head into the underwater Iris stems that lined the bank. I walked along to the next peg, my taut line pointed to where the fish had found sanctuary, but the angle wasn’t right for me to pull it out, I ended up leapfrogging a couple of pegs until I was in a position to get a direct pull on the fish. Luckily I was fishing eight pound line straight through and this gave me the confidence to try and heave the fish out of its bolthole.
I kept the pressure on for as long as I dared but always relented at the point I thought the line would snap, twenty minutes later I was still in the same position so a pull for a break was the only option I had left, so with a heavy heart I wound down on the fish until my rod was hooped over, I then walked slowly backwards with my rod pointing at the fish, ping, ping, I closed my eyes and lowered my head instinctively as imagined my float flying towards me like an arrow.
A much bigger ping and the rod gained some line, I quickly wound down and walked backwards again and more line was gained, I continued this tactic until miraculously I was soon playing the fish in open water, it was free and its spirit had been broken.
I realised that my landing net was still in my original peg and had to tactfully manoeuvre my way back there without losing contact with the fish, a few token runs were offered before I was back where I had started but these were easily controlled and the Tiger had become a kitten as it rolled into the waiting net.
I stared in awe at the massive Mirror Carp, its bronze shiny skin was peppered with large scales that ran along its back and shoulders, its beady eyes watched every move I made.
I took my aluminium disgorger and removed my tiny hook from its leathery mouth and went to get my scales, I didn’t really care what it weighed but it looked bigger than Jacks eleven pound fish I had witnessed. The scales showed a weight of just over thirteen pounds, but if it had weighed six pounds I would have been just as pleased, my first ever Carp, and I was on cloud nine.
Thanks Jack, I hope there are Carp lakes in heaven.
