The warm January has seen yellow roses bloom in Tyneside

This January is on course to be the second warmest in the UK since records began and the fifth warmest in central England for 350 years.
The average UK-wide temperature so far for the month - which experts say is unlikely to change - is 5.9C (43F).

The average Central England Temperature (CET), which has been measured since 1658, is 7.1C (45F).

The Met Office began recording UK-wide weather in 1914, with the warmest January since that time coming in 1916.

During that record month, the average temperature was 6.3C (43F).

The Met Office said temperatures had been pushed up by winds blowing warm air in from the west.

This month's average is 2.5C above the Met Office's long-term January average, measured between 1971 and 2000.

The warmest CET - which covers a triangle between Manchester, London and Bristol - was also recorded in 1916 when a reading of 7.5C (46F) was taken.

Climate change

This January has also seen 17% more sunshine and 21% more rain than normal.

A Met Office spokesman said the warm temperatures were down to wind directions across the month and were in line with recent trends.

"The warm temperature this month is because we have had a lot of winds from the west," he said.

"When winds blow in from the Atlantic it keeps things milder than average.

"The last 30 years in particular have seen a remarkable warming trend and this is in line with what we would expect to see with climate change."

Along with warmer than normal weather the month saw gales on 18 January which resulted in 11 deaths.

Winds of up to 99mph also caused travel disruption, damaged homes and businesses and left thousands of people without power.

The Met Office said colder weather was expected to return next week with "one or two" cold snaps in February.

my lad & his mate have just done 4 days 3 nights at a local water under a brolly, in January !!!!!!!!!!!! Don't think many people can say they've done that before......

Have you heard the latest due to January being the mildest January since records began(as stated by Blankmaster) the weather men are no predicting we are going to get the hotest summer ever .
Just like back in the late 80s when michael Fish said yes there is a hurricane out there in mid atlantic but it wont be comming anywhere near us. !2 hours later it arrived ,i dont think anyone can predict thew weather that far ahead no matter what they say its going to do i make my judgement as to where i am going to go fishing if i go at all on the morning i am due to go when i stick my sleepy head out of the window.

A hotish summer would be nice but not too hot as im sure non of us want a repeat of what happend at Bolesworth last year on any other water no matter which club it belongs to

Fear of runaway global warming pushed more than 40 countries to line up Saturday behind France's bid for a new environmental body that could single out — and perhaps police — nations that abuse the Earth.

"It is our responsibility. The future of humanity demands it," President Jacques Chirac said in an appeal to put the environment at the top of the world's agenda. He spoke at a conference a day after the release of a major report saying global warming is getting worse and humans are to blame.

The alarming report sparked calls for fast, planet-wide action. But not everyone at Chirac's conference welcomed the idea of a body that would define and possibly enforce environmental rules. Key world polluters — including the United States, China and India — steered clear, while Europeans embraced it. A total of 46 countries agreed to pursue plans for the new organization.

Al Gore, former U.S. vice president and a spokesman for the fight against global warming, cheered Chirac's efforts.

The report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was "yet another warning about the dangers we face. We must act, and act swiftly," Gore said in recorded remarks shown at the conference. "We are at a tipping point."

wonder if are fish will grow as big as french fish if we get a climate similar to theres !!!!
