I believe there is an old saying that goes:

"When the wind blows from the east, the fish bite the least. When the wind blows from the west, the fish bite the best."

I've found there does tend to be a certain level of truth in it too. However, you won't catch if you're not on the bank, so easterlies don't tend to put me off too much.

Mike.

I must say at this point i know a bit about wind directions and fishing deep / shallow water in the winter but whats made me ask the question is that iam reading still searching a the moment and some of the stuff that tel mentiones about wind direction and the depth of water goes a little against what i know and have read , for instance as you say stig your drawn to the deep water in winter ? i personly go for the shallower waters looking for the sun to warm the water and to spur the fish into a little feeding spell , BUT tel mentinons deep water is best to head for then in 3-4 chapters later states that shallow pits are his target through the colder months , the same applies to wind directions , his views alter a little as you read the chapters . So in shirt i was after people view mainly on where they would fish in certain wind conditions.

Hello you.

Here we go with another one of your "how long is a pice of braid questions"

Too many variables, Smokester In no particular order, It depends on the water, the depth, do the fish respond to wind, a new wind, a stale wind, a strong wind, a breeze, direction, surface wind direction as opposed to cloud direction, the wind chill.

IMHO only experiance on that particular water will give you the difinitive answer you seek, either that or info from one of the anglers on there that you trust.

As an example, Horseshoe Lake, end of February bitterly cold, strong, easterly wind and the fish in Winter Bay are doing somersaults and taking MIXERS like there was no tomorrow!!!

Ahh i have so dearly missed you me old muka you are right that there are many factors that control the outcome , but if we take this at surface value or rule of thumb as some people say . to make it a bit easyer for you , lets say its a water you know nothing about and there are no visable signs of fish showing or bubbling , Now a good angler would then turn to other factors that control fish movement to try and decide wich area to target , this is normaly done by weather conditions etc , hence the question , so in short its an over view and not exact that iam after , and if you can tell me how bloody long that bit of string is you would make me very happy lol

Oh dear.

If you are walking on cold and don`t know the depths or anything at all about the water and we are talking winter, then I would say same as summer, from SE through to W, I would go for the end of the wind.

You really are not giving enough information to make even an educated guess.
As an experianced angler I would at least get my marker rod out and find some depths to try and make an informed decision.
It would be nice to know how long the wind had been blowing in whatever direction.

In deeper water as you well know, thermoclines and tempreature inversion start to play a part.

ahh now going off topic a second , i had always been under the belief that thermoclines come in to action in water deeper that 4ft , but think jules told me it was 40ft and over ??????any ideas muka ?

Same here mate, I'd look for the area's where the sun spends most of it's time in an area of the lake throughout the day. Even better is when this is a shallow part of the lake Not always a winner but it's a good pointer to begin with if struggling.

As for wind direction etc, I tend not to take it into much consideration in the winter, relying more on the sun to warm the water and fish these area's as opposed to wind and thermal layers an' that jazz...
