Dont put any fertilizer on your lawn ,fit a filtration system and plant other plants in the pond like lillies &/or marginal plants to use up any nitrates that get into the pond.Like Cantona says shade is a good move as well

When did the blanket weed problem start,if it's just started here's something to think about. If you are running a filter did you switch it off for the winter,if so ,mistake, you'd be better leaving it running through the winter. Also do you have an ultra violet light fitted, if so your tube probably want's changing, they only last for about a year.If you don't have any of the above are you over feeding.Don't forget if you feed in the winter it's best to feed wheatgerm based pellets, higher protein is not recommended,it's difficult for the fish to digest.I'll post apicture of my pond soon,it's 21ft x14ft at it's widest and 5 1/2ft deep, and i havent had any problems since i installed it 3 years ago. This is my third pond in 20 years and lost only 1 fish.anyway i'll stop bragging now.Try these remedies and let's know how you got on.A.J.

the blanket weed has grown ever since i have had the pond, the filtration system has never been switched off, the uv bulb is only 2 months old, i dont generally feed the through the winter unless i see them in the upper layers during the winter sun days.

Seems to me that youv'e been unlucky with this blanket weed ,maybe there's another answer. What gallonage is your pond and what type of filter are you running,What i'm trying to determine is, what started the blanked weed growing in the first place. There's usually an answer. What size wattage you using on the uv,and do you know the flow rate through it.Another one, do you know the flow rate from the filter return to the pond. What i'm trying to do is to reduce this dredded algae if not find an answer for you.It invades a lot of pond keepers and can usually be eradicated completely.

I had this problem at my old house when we had a pond, even if you kill it back it will always partly live on, the only way to truly kill it off for the season I was told was to empty out the pond in summer, let the liner dry out then you scrub it with a brillo pad and fairy liquid, then to fill it up again, repeat the process without the fairy liquid to rinse it out and then fill it back up and treat the water.
obv it depends on what sort of pond you have but that stuff is a mere! |

If you empty the pond you are asking for a whole load of more problems barbz.....New pond syndrome
and I would be seriously worried about cleaning the pond walls with fairy liquid I cant see how refilling once would totally remove all residue. This is the first year I have had blanket weed in my pond i've hoovered alot up,I put bales of barley straw in a month ago to give it time to start breaking down before the weather warmed up, it needs to be suspended at the surface under a flow of water for best results, the water is crystal clear and the weed seems to be breaking down as its collecting in the filter and more has sunk to the bottom. Will hoover it again and clean the quartz tubes on the uv to see if I can keep it under control.
