Question Clapped out old boilers

No, I'm not talking about your mother in law, just after a bit of advice on a plumbing predicament!

My hot water cylinder has recently sprung a leak, not a major one - its managable with a change of towel every 24hrs, but nevertheless it needs to be seen to. I've done a bit of digging about and saught the advice of a professional and it turns out that the hot water cylinder needs to be replaced. This will cost a few hundred quid

But the thing is, for a few hundred more I could get rid of the cylinder and the clapped out old boiler I've got and replace it with a combi-boiler which would be far more efficient, cutting down the gas bills. In time it would pay for itself, but what about practicality???

Am I right in thinking these combi-boilers are to blame for the warm shower/toilet flush conflict? Are they the cause of many an argument in the family home? (I'm sure theres an Eddie Izzard sketch about this - "Everyone in London, STOP USING TAPS!")

Any advice?

Combi boilers have there advantages and disadvantages like you have mentioned one of them, but in the long run i think they are a sound investment. I would not worry about the flushing toilet syndrome its not that bad.

We fitted a combi a couple of yrs ago mate, very efficient, well chuffed with it The only down side is it takes longer to run a bath, when we moved the cylinder it made room for a shower, we fitted a thermostatically controlled one which limits how hot the water will flow, great for if you have kids.....cos they cant scald themselves and it also puts an end to the call of "turn that tap off!!!"

So it's looking like a thumbs up for the combi. I think deep down I know I'll end up going for that option, but the cost scares me a bit. Still, I should look at it as an investment, after all, it'll cut my bills.

Thanks for your feedback!

Yep, would agree with the combi coments.

Fitted one last year - hot water whenever you want it - and reduced bills
