Definition of Avatar!!!

Just wondering how the name avatar came to be used for the pictures accompanying our posts...I'd not come across the word before going on forums;

The dictionary gives two defs.

Hindu : manifestation of a deity in human or animal form,

or; a visible manifestation of an abstract concept.


So we are all either 'Gods' or 'we have no reference as material objects', .......I guess.
