You've just complained that, as part of the renewal process, HGV drivers must pay to have a qualified medical professional undertake an examination to ensure that the driver is physically able to drive their lorry in a safe manner.

These are the drivers that hurtle along our nation's roads in 40 tonne lumps of metal, a matter of inches away from you, me and our friends and families. I simply don't understand how anyone could possibly have a problem with this?

Mike.
Spot on there Kermit totally agree with HGV Drivers having to take a Medical as these Guys are Professional Drivers earning their living this way and as a someone who spends a lot of time behind the wheel I would like to think that the HGV Driver behind me is Medically fit to be driving 40+ Tonnes of Vehicle its total common sense to have this in place.

Infact given the nature of the Job I think 5 year intervals is a bit too long to be honest I would rather see it every 2 years for Drivers that use the UK Network and for Foreign Drivers coming into the UK it should be every 12 months.

We have all heard of the tragic events on the M6 this week.

Re the Fee I think the Haulage Companies should pick this up for all their Drivers if thats not the case already as far as I can see 100 is nothing compared to the lives and safety of other Motorists on the road.

It would seem by most of the above posts that whatever way you look at it,we in general have to pay to work!!!!(drivers cards, renewal of compentency papers,,,etc etc,,,)

Why dont we all say boll**ks to the powers that be,all jack our jobs in,and let this money grabbing government(and they cant seem to get that right judging by the present economical situation) pay us to all stay at HOME

I personally would still pay for my driving licence so i could still go fishing,,,,mind you i forgot,i could be able to claim for it,,,,

(this post is totally tongue in cheek and is in no way a pop at any that are unfortunate to be umemployed, good luck to all, although in the present climate a little more than luck may be needed

Fully agree but as well as the ****head truck drivers who hurtle along inches away from you, dont lose sight of the ****head car drivers who do the same. Theres good and bad people driving any type of vehicle. Unfortunately a 44 ton truck in the wrong hands does more damage than a 1 ton car. The medical fee is no problem i treat it as a 5 yearly health check but a vehicle is a vehicle and driven by somebody with poor health, eyesight, heart, etc is bloody dangerous. Car drivers should have 5 yearly medicals as well.

I dont drive for a living even though i have held a Class 1 for 25 years, i couldn't the thought of tramping up and down our roads all day every day is just to mind knumbing to consider. I just treat myself to the occasional fuel test run in a 44 tonner every so often just to keep my hand in.
