just a comment regarding handling eels
Don't lay them on their back and stroke them for too long as this will kill the eel. They breath mainly through their stomach via the protective slime. Lying them on their back and stroking them removes the slime and suffocates them.

Ammended my comment to make it more specific I didn't mean lay them on their back for an age stroking them matey

Eels are great fun. If you get a big one you definately know about it. But the slime does stink and you can never get it off your landing net.
