Redesmere Bream

I'm a SOTAS new member and not sure you carp guy's like bream anglers cluttering up your chat space.(If it is not the done thing please give me a polite indication) But looking at the posts you appear to be one of the most friendly and open groups I've seen, and the guys I've chatted to on the bank have been very helpful, so I'll ask anyway, as you are my best option for what's going down at the mo.

Has the drop in water temp put the bream down as well as the carp? i.e. to you, nuisance fish activity slowed as well. Thinking of putting a couple of nights in this week to start my new campaign. Any bream related pointers; method or inline feeder, naturals or boilies, optimum feeding times etc... greatfully received or if you know anyone else who is fishing for them that would be open to sharing info, they could drop me a line, by PB if neccessary.

Is there a dedicated bream angling society or website (I certainly cannot find one) or are they really that unpopular!!

Welcome to the forum mate.

Think there is already a thread about the redesmere bream in the general coarse chat section of the forum.

Definately some cracking bream in there and i was planning on having a bash for them this year but so far haven't found the time!! think there have been a few biggies coming out recently. From what i've heard from other people method feeder is a good tactic for the bream on there.

Does anyone else out there think there is demand for a smaller species specimen hunters section to the forum or a dedicated site even? Seems like a gap in the market to me. I've got the time and a bit of cash - would need a tech head, whizzkid to put it together. Just a thought.

If you wanna know about Bream on the mere ask Nige he loves em and fishes for em sometimes . Capesthorne has a good head of Bream as well Rudyard is a renowned Bream water and Bolesworth has loads of the slimey bait thieves in there I dunno about Astbury Give Nige a shout he can tell you better then i can as i havnt fished the mere for a few seasons now.

did 2 nights on redes at the weekend and was hoping for the bream but unfortunately they werent playing ball , only had a couple of pick ups but got absolutely mithered by a big group of swans lol!

Hi Russ.

Find at least 6 foot of water, which will eliminate the bird problem.

Get yourself on the ''Pines'' swims, both are comfy and the bottom is clear at the distances I'll give you.

The swim on the left (with the wooden stage) has 10' of water on a 35yrd cast (if you look at the reflection of the trees on the water- cast just into the dark water) straight out in line with the stage. Do not cast too far as it starts to shallow up past that.

The right hand one has a very defined ledge to work to - if you cast towards the masts of the boats in the yacht club you get 4' at 35yrds with short stems of canadian pond weed - as you cast more to the left it drops off to 10' with a clear bottom which I suspect is sandy (compare the margins of both the swims) with filamentous weed, which is why I've been popping up the bait an inch.

I now reckon there is no need to fill it in, the fish will be coming through anyway. Just put out about 15 - 20 balls, make them the same size as a loaded method feeder. Mix the base groundbait up with NO freebies in but when you make each ball up plant just a couple of grains of corn or a broken boilie inside each one - no more. Don't bother with a marker float or trying to drop the initial feed on a sixpence, deliberately space the balls out in a line about 3yrds long. I also make half the balls rock hard and half softer so they break down at different rates but it's not essential.


Get the feed in about 8pm. Use one piece of real corn and one floating artificial on an inch long hair to a size 10 hook - ( I've been experimenting with hook link lengths and 4" - 5" seems about right, I'm using 6lb Berkley flouro line) The feeder is a Nisa 28g inline in the smallest size but there are lots of alternatives.

Bob 3 or 4 grains of corn in each feeder before casting and bury the line close to the hook in the feed to stop tangles.

I've been experimenting with 10mm esterberry,strawberry and pineapple boiles, floating or sinking on the hook and adding a broken boilie in the feeder (sinking!! obviously) but every fish has come to the corn.


Position the baits in the approx area, at opposite ends of the feed - I'm doing this to try and work out which direction the shoal come and go. The left rod usually gives the first indications or run.


Make a brew and sit tight until 11.15 when you may get a few indications they have arrived and if you do not get a proper take and a big slab on the bank by 12.15 I'll eat our dog.

I'll be fishing Thu/Fri 'n' Sat nights this week, although determined to have a recee day on Astbury to check the basic contours of the place, on at least one of them.
Trying to adapt my Bream method to one that should snare the odd Tench to, based on Maples and molasses' . Fancy peg 1 & 2 in the meadow, after the Spinney, plenty of bubblers there this morning. But if they are free, could grab the Pines pegs for a snotter or two. The carp guys appear a bit diss-illusioned with the pace of the fishin' at the mo. - and are wandering off to other venues - leaving lots of free pegs.

During daylight hours maybe it's worth trying, switching to maggot feeder. The Tench absence is baffling me. Must try it out.

I am surprised that I'm gettin' no big roach snaffling the corn as well.

I don't think that the contours on Astbury are basic, certainly not below the water

Are you thinking of Astbury for bream? Think the only ones that seem to have been coming are the ones put in from Redesmere a few months ago, a dozen or so into double figures. Not sure of original stocking but don't know of any coming out to carp anglers so may be better sticking to Redesmere.
