used to fish a water a few years ago with a simular type of bottom..and i know what your saying...i think mate you trying to much to keep your bait on the top layers..but youl probably find that the fish are feeding deeper than where your rig his bein presented..fish with bottom baits short links and heavier leads and have the confidence to fish in deeper and i think youl notice your results improving.

Light lead and long-ish hooklink mate best bet..

pear lead or some type of flat lead maybe? to lie on the top of it instead of going in..?

i fish a water like that myself and to make things worse it get chocka with weed even in winter to an extent your happy to fish the peat! my advise would be try not worry to much about it not all the carps food will be lying on top of the peat in a nice little pile and they will certainally be troughing thru the stuff to find there food it can work in your favour at times as the peat gets disturbed it clouds up the water and gives em away iwould try and get a few spots going with baits that will make em grub about for there food hemp and small pellets are a good place start as are maggots which will bury into the peat and really make em look for it.

yeh id probably go for a one ounce lead, and 12-18 inch 12lb mono hooklength. wrap pva tape around the hook point, and slowly tease back when youve casted in, should straighten the hooklength and leave the bait on top!

Get yourself some drennan surface controllers (available in different sizes) and put a pin ***** hole in the side. Using a bucket, fill the controller with water until it is 'tuned' to sink very slowly. Once the correct sink rate is achieved, simply seal up the hole and use this as a substitute for a lead on a lead clip arrangement in conjunction with a longish hooklink.

It will still cast fairly well and you can use a pva bag with some air trapped inside to reduce tangles if need be. This set up is also good for fishing over bottom weed by the way.

If this is too much like hard work then you could always use the ch*d rig (I refuse to use that annoying southern word) but affix the hooklink right up at the opposite end to the lead with the two beads,as well as using a small half ounce lead.

I've had a few fish in thick weed doing this so don't see it being much different on mega soft bottoms.

maybe try a pva bag with a few freebies and a few foam nuggets and your lead in it as well , ive always found thats worked for me on silty or weedy waters
but as other lads have said carp do feed in the silt as well !

Like most things the chud rig is nothing new,an idea borrowed and sometimes slightly adapted. The short rig was brought to light by the northern porrn star moons back and even that was publicised nigh on fifteen years previous,if not more,in Lord Hutchinsons' excellent book 'Carp strikes back' in a similar vein.

Quite correct ollie old chum, but the way mr porno used it is not the way that all and sundry now chuck it out,it does pick fish up in its popular format,of that theres no doubt, but the original presentation and other add ons is a much better hooker

its there word for all the crap that lies on the bottom of the lake like leaves it was nick heleaur that named it the chod for that reason, frank warick come up with it as the silt rig because he was fish ultra silty meres

try the very small trilob leads with a long braided hook length
