Whatever it is in carp fishing there are people who will take it to the nth degree.
I always take water with me even for a day session (you can go on about the long hike with gear, keep it light, yada, yada, yada) and always wash my hands using one of the antibactirial soloutions. People are paranoid about smells on their hands, I am paranoid about not getting weils disease. I have used a Coleman for fifteen years and have never had a problem with the smell of petrol. Either fill it before you go or wear disposable gloves. There are soloutions to getting your hands clean, rinsing them in the lake is not the best one if you are about to eat your butty or cook your tea.

I agree washing your hands in lake/canal water or rubbing them in lake bottom silt is a bad idea as they/it can contain many nasties probably the worst of which in this country being Weils disease aka rat catchers yellows . Which is caught from the rats urine . Therefore it becomes much more prevalent during the summer months especially hot summers when the amount of water in our lakes and canals is greatly reduced therefore the concentration of rats urine in the water is much higher . I could bang on for hours and get all scientific but the best advice i can give is take some antibacterial wipes and clean your hands with them and should the limited odour from the wipes reduce your confidence then as previously mentioned rub some pellets about in your hands for a few minutes . However if you have left your pellet bucket/bag open over night then don't as rats could have climbed in and used your bucket as a urinal .
Do not brew up using lake water Keep clean keep safe

Worked in the pest control industry for 10 years...dont have a problem with washing my hands in lake water etc..
Weils disease is a risk factor like anything nowadays but the chances of contracting the disease through washing your hands in lake water is slim unless you have an open cut or decide to drink the water.!! If you think about it you place your hands on the bank..you handle fish..play with wet rigs..bank sticks..the list goes on and on.!!! A bit of common sense like anything always wash your hands thoroughly in clean water or use anti bacterial wipes before you eat etc...

I always use antibacterial wipes before handling food ect,but how far do we take this?
If you smoke do you wipe your hands before every fag, before you scratch an itchy eye lid, before you make a brew the list is endless. The main thing is to protect yourself as much as you can and be safe. By the way i purchased the new anglers protection from Diawa, its an antibacterial jell that you rub into your hands and is said to prevent you from contracting weil's disease. This might be a gimmick(hope not)but should come in handy ![]() Cheers Slim.

I personally go for the approach of being sensible, but not silly. I have no problems with washing my hands in a river or lake to take the thick of the grime off (groundbait, skimmer slime, particles etc.). I've done this for some 20+ years now and have yet top come a cropper through any form of illness.
Maybe it is because I am from an era when kids were actually allowed to play with mud (shock horror ) but I see no problems with getting a few germs in your system from time to time. It's good for your immune system (taking up kayaking was certainly the best thing I've ever done to stay healthy!).I've got better in recent years though; I have baby wipes on hand for long sessions and nowadays use antibac gel before eating/cooking nowadays. However, it has not always been this way. Having said that, weils disease is a real concern. It only enters the body through cuts/abrasions and through membranes (eyes/gums etc.). if you've got any open cuts it is certainly worth covering them over. The worst time for Weils disease is the first rainfall after a prolonged dry spell when all the urine on the bank gets washed in. If you do get any symptoms that you feel may be weils disease (nausea, flu-like symptoms, aches and pains, turning yellow) you need to get to the doctors ASAP. Be warned though - you will have an incredibly hard time getting them to test a blood sample for Weils disease and may need to push hard to get this done. Mike. |
