I had a very odd experience today and am hoping some of our more experienced monkeys can help me out.
This afternoon I found myself sitting next to a pond. I was having a nice time and saw buzzards, rabbits, woodpeckers and lots of wee birdies. I couldn't quite work out why I was there, but figured it must have something to do with two sticks that were resting on a stand at the edge of the pond. Whilst minding my own business I heard a strange beeping noise and felt compelled to pick up one of the sticks. I'm not sure why I did this, but imagine my shock and surprise when the stick started to bend
Somewhat flummoxed by this, I decided to twiddle the handle on a small winch that was attached to the stick to see what happened. This seemed to make the stick bend even more and I soon realised that the source of this pulling was some quite thin string that ran from the top of the bendy stick and disappeared into the lake
Now, I'm a reasonably intelligent chap but for the life of me I could not understand why some string would make this stick bend.... Then I had a eureka moment and realised that the other end of the string must be tied to something! So, I set about twiddling the winch handle a bit more, as this seemed to make the string get a little shorter.
After twiddling for a while there was a big splash and (you're never going to believe this bit!) there was a fish attached to the end of this bit of string. It appeared to be holding on to a big yellow gobstopper.
By this time I was mystified. However, by some strange turn of fate, there was a big net lying around nearby and I managed to scoop up the sweetie-loving fish and get it onto the bank. It was a lovely looking thing and was quite muscular and had big golden scales and a beautiful fan-shaped tail. If I had to guess I would say it weighted about 11Ibs.
Now, after doing a bit of Googling around and doing some research I think I might have 'caught a carp'. Can anyone out there confirm that this is what happened to me today?
I have a sneaking suspicion that this may not have been the first carp I have ever caught, but after a disastrous season last year and a winter of pike and chub fishing it has been that long since I caught a carp I could really do with somebody confirming that my suspicions are correct?
Any help will be much appreciated. I sincerely hope that I am correct as today was fantastic and I can't wait to get out and do it again!
Mike.
