Default Leadcore/helicopter Rig Query

I've decided to try my luck with helicopter rigs for the first time this season, as they look like they'll suit one of my chosen venues well. I've bought some of the ESP rigs that come complete with a leadcore leader.

I was wondering what advice people have on the position of the beads on the leader. The hooklength swivel sits between 2 rubber beads just above the lead. Does anyone have any pointers on where the bottom bead should sit? (i.e. as close to the lead as possible, or a couple of inches up the leader). Also, should the beads that sandwich the hooklength swivel be as close together as possible, or will an inch or two space between them help the rig behave more naturally?

I'll be fishing with a supple braid hooklength over a soft clay bottom. My gut instinct is to have the rig a couple of inches up the leader to stop the rig getting dragged too far down into the soft clay if the lead sinks. I think that having a slight gap between the two beads will help reduce tangles, but not too far, as this will reduce the effectiveness of the bolt rig.

Any helicopter users have anything to add?

Mike.

PS I've checked the rigs out and they will come apart nicely if I get snapped off!

ive found it doesnt realy matter were the bottom bead sits?
so most of the time when i make my own i dont even put a bottom bead on. just the top bead.
and sometimes not even the top bead.
if fishing near snags were theres could be a possible break happening, i take the bead off and wrap a piece of dissolving foam on the lead core instead of the bead. just to make sure if a break does occure that the fish will be able to free itself from the leadcore and mainline.

Wouldn't a running rig be better for soft clay mate?

I thought helicopter rigs were for weed/ silt where you put the rig the distance up the leadcore from the lead depending on depth of the weed/ silt your casting into?

I may be wrong

if your worried about the lead being dragged into the soft clay either use a lighter lead,or use it chod rig style.

i make my own lead core leaders with the esp lead core i have never used a bottom bead just an upper one i use the helicopter rig in silt myself and move the top bead up depending on the depth of the silt or chod im fishing over if the rig is traped with two beads up the leader it has more chance of tangling this van be fixed by puting the rig against the leader and wrapping apiece of disolving foam around it

Aphplumb - genuine thanks for your input above, it is appreciated.

However, please, please proof read your posts in future. The typo in your post above has just made me burst out laughing in the office and people are now giving me funny looks I assume you meant to type 'wrapping'

Mike.
