Repeat captures
What are your opinions on recaptures ? We all get them at some point or other but at what stage in your fishing do you decide to move on and stop fishing the venue ? Would you continue to slog away at the place for 1 or 2 fish that you hadnt had ? even if they werent particularly special fish ? Or would you call it a day and cast your thoughts to other venues ? |

Not a fan of repeat captures . . . but have had a few.
I'd only stay on a lake for 1 or 2 fish (that I hadn't caught) if they were the two biggest!! That said I'm back on Horton next year and a few of the stockies I caught 6yr back are well over 10lb bigger . . .well you wouldn't shake a forty off at the net would yer?

I can see where you are coming from PJW but if i came to a situation where i had banked most of the lakes stock of carp then i would feel the need to move on to a fresh challenge even if there were a few fish left that i would like to catch. I wouldn't say that i was giving up on the water but instead i'd think that i'd have acheived most of what i wanted to when i set out.
There would be a few exceptions to this for example if i were to go and set my sights on a particular 'special' carp, but i wouldn't like to fish a lake which only contained one target fish. I'd much rather fish a water which had several 'special' carp in rather than just the one backed up with a load of ugly looking fish.

I think you know yourself when it's time to move on to a different water, whether you have had all of the fish or just the one that you want, eventually the buzz goes of fishing any particular water regularly.
I fished the same water for a number of years, had some good fish and there was still better to be had out of there. It got to the point though that I realised I wasn't really enoying it as much as I should. Sessions on Capesthorne and Astbury this year has started me thinking again about my fishing and the enjoyment is back, rounded off by the one-toner at Astbury on Saturday morning. Few moments compare to that first fish from any new water, a feeling that I'm hoping to repeat on Top Pool and Main Lake this year

i don't mind that much about repeat catches they might just be the big or beautifull one's, and it depends if you are targeting fish in there too, i mean did you set a goal when you started to fish the place i.e all of them or just the named or special one's.
i have targets and think if they are fore filled it's time to move on unless it's just a day's pleasure session with the lad's hope you know what i mean baz..

I don't mind too much, because at the end of the day, I'm out fishing, with the intention of catching fish. Just becuase I've had that fish before it doesn't devalue the fish in my opinion, and I don't mind. I tend to stick to waters that I enjoy fishing, whether I've emptied the place or never caught on it, I prefer to fish somehwere for the relaxtion, and chill factor, aswell as fishing, and don't just go to try and bank a lump. Each to their own though, as some lads like to target big fish, and fair play to them.
That's my 10-pence worth anyway....

Eh lads all this repeat capture stuff if a catch its memorable to me as it dont happen that often so repeats are fine by me a fish is a fish and if you have caught it more then once you have outwitted what must be a more wary fish or on the other hand it may just be a bit dumber then most carp in my case its prob the dumber ones that i repeat capture..

I must say that they really don’t bother me at all. I go fishing to catch fish and enjoy myself, and if I catch, irrespective of whether I’ve had it before, then I’ve done what I set out to achieve. Furthermore, some of the repeats I’ve had, other anglers have been trying to catch for years without success, and so in some cases it can end up being quite an achievement rather than a hindrance.
I really don’t get those who moan about catching repeats, it’s like saying “God, I went fishing today and I caught one – I’m gutted”. I can obviously see that if you are gunning for the odd one or two, then constantly catching those you have had before could get tiresome, but I’d say if that’s that case, you need to be changing or refining your approach to bag the one you are after. I’ve met many people on the banks who say they are fishing for, or targeting a particular fish (or group of fish), but then set up blindly in the same way every session (often in the same swim!) and wait for whatever comes along – for me, that’s not targeting a fish in the true sense. Targeting a particular fish can be very difficult and needs extreme dedication, and most of those I know (including myself) who have done it properly would not begrudge repeats if it means you can go on to bag the ultimate goal. I think it also depends what your relationship is with the water. I’ve been involved with a lot of my target waters behind the scenes in a fisheries management capacity, so it’s always nice to get repeats to see how certain fish are doing, and as has been said before, if you have a close involvement with the water, it can be like seeing an old friend. There are a few fish in the Top Pool like that, Big Lin, Mental, The Warrior, DT, and Red October – I’ve caught these and many others several times from the TP, but they lose nothing in the repeat – they are all majestic fish and after a heated battle which could have gone either way, I feel privileged to have been the one that managed to outwit a wily old lump that rarely slips up on an anglers hookbait. This is such a personally thing and can be effected by so many things.
I personally dont like them, if i have had the fish i want from a lake i see no point in staying on just to cause more stress to fish i have already caught. But if i havent had the fish i want and the same one or two keep turning up i just stick with it. But do start to return the fish without weighting or pictures. Just more stress for a fish i already have photos of, why would i need more? Each to there own and it takes nothing away from the difficulty of the capture.
