Default packaging

Time for a rant at the tackle trade.

I personally am sick and tired of spending hard earned cash on packaging ! Every single item of tackle these days comes with a staggering amount of blown plastic and waste packaging. For instance, what ever happened to buying hooks in bulk boxes ? I have just gone and spent £30 on hooks, now i understand the need for them to obviously come in a packet, but why can i not get 50 or a 100 in one packet instead of ten ? I, like many others, come home put the hooks in a designated box and throw away the packaging.

Why does a packet of 20 swivels or some tail rubbers or lead clips need to be packaged the way they are in non eco freindly plastic packs, with a piece of card showing what is in the packet and how to use it ? I use tiny 3mm rig rings, now why are these tiny 'washers' nearly £4 for 20? They are after all just tiny washers. These 'gizmos' for quick change hooklinks are so much cheaper if you go to the opposite side of your tackle shop and buy them from the sea angling side. They cost £4 from the carp section yet only £1.50 from the sea angling section. How can a company justify charging £4 for a packet of 20 silicon tubing sleeves ?

ALL the tackle companys are guilty of overcharging, or is it plain and simply, RIPPING US OFF, for simple products that are over packaged just because they are designated as carp tackle and have a picture of a carp on them.

Come on tackle companies get it together, we want to buy your products but dont rip us off by charging for YOUR packaging and display ideas.

Are you not risking blunting your hooks putting them in a box

It's a good job you ain't using Owner Carp Liners, you only get 6 for £2.50

I agree with you though mate, we get ripped big time.

It was something i picked up off the Monster pursuit dvd. One of them, can't remember which one, said that hooks rattling round in a box clash and eventually blunten.

Default Ripping us off

Nothing costs you nothing everything has got a price or theres no such thing as a free lunch. both of which are correct however with regard to fishing tackle every single one of the major tackle companies is ripping us off and whats more we all encourage them to keep on doing it for the simple fact is we continue to buy their products .Someone from a major tackle company saw anglers with big boxes of company X swivels and company Ys Hooklinks and had the brilliant business idea of going to companies X and Y telling them that they will buy all the swivels and hooklinks they make for the price that they are currently selling them at and package them themselves put much less numbers of the swivels and hooklinks in each package inflate the price by 3 or 4 hundred percent and then sell them to the tackle dealers who then have to put there bit on and then sell them to us .

But if you check each hook you wont be putting a blunt hook on

I've always taken hooks straight out the packet and put them into little boxs The tackle companies do rip you off big style for packaging and it'd be great if the started selling hooks in packs of 50

Any item these days that has been designated carp gear is vastly overpriced. I saw a pair of bivvy slippers (green rubber slip on shoes) RRP £14.99, in the local garden center same pair of slip ons being sold as garden wear £4.00. How do they justify it? A walk round any outdoor or camping shop can show you how much we're all getting ripped off on the cooking/eating/drinking side of fishing and I now shop around to avoid paying what i see as a CARP TAX

Good way of putting it is that mate, if something says the word carp on it then it is guaranteed to be more expensive than regular camping or household gear.
I mean, its not just the terminal tackle but clothing too. As mentioned above about the bivvy slippers, you can get waterproof shoe type slippers for a couple of quid. Some of the professional carp clothing is rediculously priced.

In january i went the army and navy store and got a whole new set-up of winter clothing for the cold and damp weather for 50 quid, you can pay that for a matt 'carp' t-shirt alone!!

thats a good post Phil, why dont companys sell hooks in more than 10 a pack and get rid of all that packaging on other items.£30 on end bits goes no where today and you get very little for your money, except packaging.

Your right phil, we are being ripped off, but you have to remember the tackle manufactures are there to make money not tackle - that is why they are in business. They have to balance how much they can get vs loss of sales. If you think it is to expensive go for an alternative brand or shop around ( it has been already said that some items that transfer into other areas can be found cheaper). The bottom line is we will pay for what we want and as such they have us over a barrel. Do we have an idea for a new thread here Budget tackle/top quality

Maybe you could set up a poll on that one davidg? see who prefers quality over budgeting and vice versa.

Default rip off tackle

yes got to agree most bits of tackle are vastly overpriced. I got fed up with buying hooks at 10 for £3 odd. So i went back to Drennan Super specialist hooks at £2.25 for 25 hooks I've had some nice fish on em upto 23lb2oz with no problems...so if you're fed up with rip off hooks get on em.They are very sharp and very strong but a bit shiny which was no problem to me as I don't fish any gin clear waters but they may not not be to everybodies liking if you think shiny hooks will impede your chances of catching in clear water. Having said that I used them all last winter on a runs water and it was gin clear and i was still getting loads of runs
