I would personally say that 25% is a little high more like 10%....for example before spawning last year I had a 23.2 after spawning it came out at 20.12 similarly i have seen other 20's drop a couple of pound after spawning which by my reckoning is around 10%...25% would be like a 20 going to 15lb can't say I've seen that sort of loss....a 40 from the monument that usually goes around 41 pre spawning has come out at 37 post spawning again around 10%

i had the 25% figure from a magazine acf and i thought it was abit high because that is like a 40 goin to 30 and i thought that may be abit difficult. is the 10% figure off the origanal weight or off the weight when its just about to spawn

A difficult one this is mate, some fish do tend to feed up before they spawn so i suppose the true weight of a fish would be say, a month after spawning, but i bet all fish are different. In france last year my mate caught a 48lb common in the may, i fished the same venue and peg in the july and caught the exact same fish at 46, so maybe it was higher in weight before the spawn, 25% seems alot though, think Deano is about right with the 10%.

I know of a fish that was caught spawnbound at 40lbs when usually 32ish. Its not uncommon.

It varies from fish to fish sub species to sub species and venue to venue there is no exact science to the weight gained by a fish during the breeding season the weather also has a hand it things as well .If its been a good warm to hot spring then fish will produce more eggs as they have been back on the feed proper for much longer then in a cold spring like this year but there again there is no exact science to this either its all just rules of thumb and rough estimates.
However in my experience i have found that Commons have a greater weight gain and loss etc due to egg production during the breeding season .Yet again nothing set in stone as i can only comment on a handfull of waters probably as a rule i would say the 10% mentioned in previous posts would be about right with the odd exceptions to make the rule due to the fact that nature does as it sees fit for the situation and is not governed by anglers weighing scales .
But hey who cares as long as its in excelent condition and is a kipper or at leasts a potential kipper we all love to catch em so dont worry yourselves about spawning weight gain mother nature has it all in hand as she has had for many many years and she knows best .

Local Example
Capesthorne Linear on Redesmere.
weighs 28-30lbs after spawning, weighs 35-37lbs post September.

So if you take its top weight of 37lbs, and its spawned out weight
of 28lbs, 25% weight loss is as near as dam it for this fish!!

Also a syndicate water I fish has a common that has weighed 25lbs
after spawning and just under 31lbs the same year.

Both these fish are females.
