Youve a couple of years on me!
![]() It was 1978 when i started fishing for carp seriously having served a 6 year apprentice catching roach perch and bream etc. In 78 i was just 16 and could ony stretch to BJ bite alarms. I had yellow (yes yellow) normark carp rods, that i think were really 10 feet spinning rods of 1lb TC. a 6lb carp would bend it down to the handle. I then got a pair of early diawa carp rods in 11 feet from roxy aquatics in Ashton. After starting work i later splashed out replacing the mitchel 300,s with cardinal 755,s and also got a pair of compact optonics. Later subjected to the Les Bamford conversions via Leatherbarrows in Urmston. I remember finding out about the hair rig and laughing thinking that will never work!! Then i got on it, I used to use a fine sewing needle to push 2lb line through the bait, tie it on then tie the hair to the bend of my size six jack hilton carp hooks. results doubled immediately. I found out about boilies on sale water park, i was using peanuts back then (1981/2). I started making my own boilies soon after, using rod huthinson protein mix flavoured with strawberry, all hand rolled with out any rolling tables or sausage guns!. The lads on Ritchworths ready made tutties always out fished me though!! |

Daiwa 11ft carp rod from Roxy, Mitchell 300's and Bamford conversions, well one set at a time anyway. It was just a few years after you Ian, 82-83 but I hope to still qualify as a COG!On the subject of Roxy. Spent many hours in there looking lots and buying little! John never mithered, think he was glad of the company sometimes Happy Days![]()

What waters were you fishing back then Patso? I started on Compstall in 1978 and fished it for about 5 years on and off, loads of nice over hanging margin bushes back then, shame they cut them all out! A great floater water too
Also fished roman lakes (another great floater water) and then when i got a car it was sale water park. Then Lymm dam then the big wide world. . I fished Capesthorne a bit when they used to have day tickets, caught first time on as well. There were no forums to tell you where to go it was all word of mouth on the banks |

Funny how we followed the trends back then as much as we do now! I had mitchell 300's and cardinal 755's (still got them!). You were either a Bamford or a Delkim man, I saved my pocket money for months and got my compacts converted by Bob Morris, they were quality alarms. As for bait does anyone remember when the Richworth boilies first came out, there were some great flavours and some dreadful ones! My favourite had to be the pink salmon supreme. We used to roll our own stuff using hutchy's ingredients and Geoff Kemp's flavours (zings!). Black spider dacron, au lion d'or, I could go on.....
