The sad thing about the "Instant Carpers" is they will only be chasing carp for a maximum of 2 or 3 years
After that the biggest percentage will dump their gear and never pick up a rod again

Me personally I look at some aspects of modern carp fishing and it's made me walk away from it and pursue the stuff that fishing is about

Putting a fly into that unknown peice of water whilst up to your waist in water.
Watching that float lift and slide through the oily surface.
Trying to outwit those Crucians when they are finicky.
The sheer beauty of a big Roach.
Catching Rudd off the top.
The swingtip slowly rising to the horizontal.
The barn owls ghosting over the rush beds.
The rabbits playing.
The foxes having a nosy.
The badgers making a din.
The field mouse nicking your bait.
The tufties diving on your baited swim.

It's not all about catching fish. Just being somewhere special is somtimes enough

The Instant Carper who has never done anything else is missing out on soooooooooooo much

I will leave my carp fishing now to the private estate i am lucky enough to fish where their is me, the carp and the bunny rabbits.
That way i can enjoy again the thrill of catching that majestic fish THE CARP

The whole scene can get very depressing. The only escape is to be invited into a quality syndicate with like-minded individuals. Even then there is a new thread each week from someone hoping to get straight into one of these.
I agree with Bebbo, I have been fishing for other species more and more over the last 5 years, I spend as much time after Grayling, barbel, chub and other coarse fish as I do carp and I think anyone that 'served their apprenticeship' after such species will find themselves drawn back as the situation gets worse on the NW waters. And when you do its just as much fun as you remember.

the thinkg is this attitued of instant success is not just in the younger anglers ! much more like that its in many new anglers....

people should learn to walk before trying to run !

Thats it tenchmaster THE APPRENTICESHIP as mentioned above. You will probably remain an angler for the rest of your life and will at some point abandon the carp fishing to go back to your beginnings

Times change and so do attitudes..!! It's a case of adapting too..

JR Hartley probably never thought people would be using a fly rod for catching Carp....

mind due its probably why he reached 95...

I agree with a lot that has been said, however not to much on the tart's gear ( slight tart myself)

My attitude is i earn the money why not treat myself to the best my money can buy for the hobby i love and have loved for many years

But as has been said i served my apprenticeship fishing form Roach and Perch on a pole and Bream on the swimfeeder/quivertip method.

And a few of my goals this year involve other types of fish mainly river fish

End of the day it's to easy for a newcomer to get carping!!

Carp fishing can be sooooooo boring.
That's why I often go at night, cast in, food, quick read, sleep, pack up then off to work....without rushing.
In daylight, I need a float rod out, got to be doing something, unless of course the carp are really having it, or (heaven forbid) I'm fishing with a mate.

I think you're right Bebb, young instant carpers may give up quickly, particularly if not catching, a bit like some members change clubs every year.

Do we get middle aged instant carpers?

Totaly agree, I also had served an apprenticeship since I was about 10, but when I decided to take up carping over a year ago, all I had to do was walk into a tackle shop, get the gear, then find a water, and I was able to walk onto the main lake, the was no criteria for havign to fish a stock pond or match lake.

Those that know me, or have met me will testify to the fact that i am a huge tackle tart but like you, iv worked hard for all of my kit and its not like im spending the money on drugs or drink, so why not push the boat out and get some quality kit.

Bebbo, unfortunately the SEAT is not a hatchback. £1000 + my polo got me 4 years newer, 30000 miles less, power steering ,electric front windows, 300cc more, adjustable seat hight and air con.
It doesn't have a boot, it's a bat-cave.
Struggling to get my rods in, but at least all 4 seats are now kept clean.
I do miss a hatchback, and a rear wiper though.

pm read and understood.
Off out now, camping.
