Being a smoker i have always wonderd if the smell of cigs on my fingers tainted the bait and was just wanted to know if non smokers caught more fish or does it not matter either way ....

Not sure how much research has been done on this but i do know that if women handle the bait before it enters the water it can boost catch rates apparently. It is due to the pheromones in a females skin which is not present in males!
So from that point of few there probably will be cigarette type deposits that reach the bait, doesnt mean to say that its a bad thing though, the fish might like the odd fag!!!

hi stig. i often think the smell on your hands put fish off but since i'm addicted to kid myself i think the fish need them too and they will get hooked on both nicotine and my hook.....

nicotene boilies anyone??? i smoke the lad i normally go with doesnt and the catch rates are the same if not me catching more perhaps the flavours in bait mask the smell because if i have had a fag then handled bait i normally cant smell smoke on my hands only the flavouring of the bait. When i started fishing i know of people who used to blow smoke in there groundbait so the fish got used to it. wonder if any research has been done into this?

Don't think it can make much difference. If any smell got on your hookbait from handling it how far could it penetrate, no more than a couple of microns, and would probably be washed off before it hit the bottom. That said I smoke and always wash my hands in the lake before i handle a new hook bait because I'm paranoid about scuppering my chances

I wouldn't know about having the smell of smoke on my hands but before handling bait at the start of a sesion or handling my coleman lamp i wash my hands in lake water and run my hands through the silt in the margins. I don't know if it will make any difference but if it makes just a tiny difference then its worth it.

IMO it's going to make a difference to the smell of a bait. I'm not exactly sure what the ratio is that fish can pick up a smell in water, but, if I can smell fags on a boilie I'm dam sure a carp will to.

Put it this way, the freebies your putting out if your a smoker are going to be relatively fag smell free, however, your hookbait is going to be handled more by you, thus smelling more. Whether this makes any difference I don't know. Would the carp be able to differentiate between the same baits your using, and learn to ignore the 'faggy' one because it associates it with danger, who knows..?

Aha another theory however as i always smoke with my right hand and only ever handle my bait with my left i think that should minimise the faggy smell on the boilies

yea right, one handed trying to put bait on, its bad enough with two hands makin sure everythings ok be for you put the baited rod back out and you use one hand,,,, your one hell of a fisher man
ill have to go back to the drawing board
as for the fag thing i always wash my hands in the water, ask some one who dont smoke thay can smell it miles away, or light up once youv done your rods,,, but it could be a while if you use one hand

I like the thought that if women handle your 'bait' you catch more - not really bothered about the science befing that, just makes life easier! The missus can carry my kit from the car too!
"luv, turn off the bivvy light! and make sure theem PVA bags are ready for the morning"
I'm a non smoker but I hate to think what my hands smell of considering where I keep them when bivvied up! lol

thats true...! my missus started fishing this year for the first time in her natural and she's not blanked once, also did you know that the u.k. record salmon was caught by a woman...! its the pheromones in their finger tips apparently.

I used to smoke and handled the bait with the same hand but it never caused any problems catch wise
