dont quite get the carp match thing personally ............it goes against all my beliefs regarding the pursuit of the quarry........as for wanting to be crowned the best in the area ..............who gives a s**t ? it just highlights the need that people have to try to prove to others that they have an ability to catch fish............and this comes back to the same old question..........who are you fishing for ? your bait company! and why are you fishing ?

no ta give me peace and solitude on the banks

You know what they say, whatever floats your boat. I personally don't mind because I look at it in a different mind-set. It's only a one-off, and it's usually a chance to fish a new venue. There is usually a nice atmostphere and it's a good laugh but like you say, for some it is a chance to show themselves to others.

interesting points of view here, and for me/ well i like good old carp match (and the yealry North V South matches proves this) its a light hearted affair with beer and greasy food!

obviously this NWChumps is a bit more organised and probably wont be as "lenient" on rules etc...

each to there own, the big carp matches arent for me, but dont let anyone tell you i dont like a social or i dont like a bit of a competition

Like as been said - each to his own. Healthy competion breeds inovation, half the tackle we take for granted would not be here if it wern't for commercial interests - bait included - don't knock it. Personally comp fishing is not my scene, nice quite water, one or two of the lads (or girls - can't leave out bet) - heaven

I see what you mean, but surly more innovation has come about through people wanting to better *themselves* and catch more fish, rather than to catch more fish than the person on the next swim?

The only person I compete against on the bank is myself, and in doing that I have learnt far more than fishing in any competition could ever teach me.

I’m not against them, they are just not for me. We hold a series of them each year on Blackwood and have done for over ten years and I love each one, but that’s because it’s a good crack where old friends meet up, have a laugh, and hopefully bank a few kippers, and I would suggest that’s along the same lines as Chesh. However, these type of matches are *far* removed from those full of ‘the next big things’ or idiots, as I prefer to call them, all trying to make out they are the best thing since sliced bread… Yawn.

compete against yourself Jules??

blimey must be like banging your head against a brick wall pmsl

i wouldnt want to be you goign against you..... the headaches that must bring with your knowledge blimey !!!

spot on though matey, the N v S matches i have each year are as much a social as a match, yes we have a competetive edge as the banter after the match about who won/lost is superb and rolls on for 12months hahaha

as for the big matches? will i watch them? nah, wil i particpiate? nah, it just doesnt float my boat whats right for one isnt necessarily right for all !

good thread this

Not for me but the more anglers on the bank enjoying the sport the better

Match and specimen anglers can and do learn a lot from each other, particularly as more match venues are dominated by carp catches. Method feeders, use of groundbait and pellets, maggots, etc. etc. are as common in both matches and specimen angling. Why not have specimen carp matches if there's enough interest, both offer a different type of challenge and reward.
