i have to use mono on the lakes im fishing at the moment but when i swap over to using braid [berkley ] i can usually get at least another 20mts, the only problem with briad is that i need a lot of backing on my emcasts to fill the spools

Only a joke grubby only a joke mate.I agree with what you are saying it takes time to learn how to compress a rod and many never can.

I suspected you were, but thought it worth making the point, joke or not.

It’s amazing how many people look towards ever increasing test curves to cure their casting woes. Sometimes it may work, but more often than not it just means they end up paying a lot of money and still casting badly.

Unless you are a natural, casting extreme distance (100 yard+) takes a lot of practice. Most of my fishing has been close to medium work, very rarely have I needed to make big casts. As a result if I do go on a water which requires fishing at range I need to practice to get back into the swing of it.

120-130 yards is about my limit with the rods that I use, but they are more of an all round tool rather than distance rods. That said it is a genuine 120-130 yards. It’s amazing how many people over estimate distance. I was once casting to a far margin that was right at the extreme of my range. A group of anglers who were fishing along the bank came down to talk to me and passed comment that they would probably stand a better chance if they could cast 180 yards like me.

180 yards?

I can’t even run 180 yards never mind cast a lead that far.

I spent some time a few years back doing measured casts with the sea anglers.I was getting more distance than most of them.Just one guy who could hit 280 with all the latest gear from Harrison. They put the markers out at every 50 yards and were all amazed that i could keep hitting the 100 yard board with my lead.I got upto 133 yards with a 2.75 century SP and a 4.5 oz lead.

I believe the biggest improvement you can make to your casting distance is to use braided line, Mono stretches and so looses energy at the start of the cast and braid being so much thinner and lighter also give less resistance.

No B.S. I have cast a measured 174 meters with 24lb braid, 2 & 3/4lb carbon/kevlar northwesterns and 8010's using the cast mentioned later in this post, and 207 meters with beach gear - full pendulum, though this is without end tackle.

A simple technique to add a fair bit to you distance (after changing to braid and/or adding a substantial shock leader) is to place the weight on the floor back from the rod tip towards your feet (on something to protest the rig - a few feet of rain gutter is good) As you start the cast, this will at first send the weight backwards and so help to fully compress the rod - try it you will be impressed, just don't use to much lead or you will snap you precious rod - try a bit less than an ounce per lb of test curve until you know your rod can take it. my kevlar reinforced 2 & 3/4 rods will take a bit under 4 oz but a standard carbon rod would probably snap

trouble is some people can`t use braid as its banned on there waters.but your right about the stretch in nylon, using a braided leader to 8lb nylon would give you a similar effect and distance.as you lose no energy on the cast.as for me and a lot of other guys i have to use nylon leaders but can still throw it a fair way when required.
