Default Braided Mainline

I was concidering switching over to braid from mono for casting purposes

Does anyone use braided mainline on here?

I have heard good things and bad things about doing this

Any advice please

dont get it if you have got TXI's.. cuts through the Y shaped movement sensor if a fish is ripping line off the spool

Tried a few years ago, used Berkely Fireline though wasn't too much choice at the time.

It did put extra yards on my casting compared to using the same set up on mono, from memory was about 15 - 20 yds so not too significant (though if this is what you're after then cheaper than bigger rods). Bite indication was better, hooking fish at distance was like hooking them in the margin. I used a mono leader to make casting easier on the fingers and give a bit of stretch, made threading tubing and concealed the end tackle better as well.

Downside for me was the almost grating sensation when reeling in, the fireline floated and was pretty visible in the water, but mostly I couldn't get used to when to give line or not. A lifetime of nylon and you get a feel for when a break is coming, I just couldn't get this with the braid and felt uncomfortable sometimes when playing fish even though I only had them to 17lb on the braid.

Give it a try on one rod and decide for yourself, are better ones now than when I gave it a go. Personally would only consider it if ever I fished at extreme ranges and boated baits out, with my casting capability it doesn't offer too much that nylon won't let me do.

Its also very scary when you are playing a fish with no stretch a low double feels like a 30 + .I also had a lot of hook pulls .
As Kev said it doesn't make that much difference on the cast its a matter of a few yards also there are a few clubs which do not allow braided mainline

In any case it's a matter of personal choice try it if you like it stay with it some people love it personally i am not a fan but there are probably nearly as many people who are a fan as who are not

hi all

ive used braid as a mainline for a good few years now .it must easy be 5-7 years cant remember exactly , i use v2 rods 3-5lbs with 20lbs fox gravitron .

it does help you cast further ,bite inication is something else .as for the hookpulls ive never had any myself .

personally though i would have thought it would be much more visible in the water than normal mono

i'm in the process of using fireline on 1 rod and fluro on the other rod....and i dont know if it's just because its new to me but i think the braid is much better.....at sunny 2 i couldn't reach the island from peg 10 but could with the braided reel . i think i'll put the braid on the second reel soon

if a lot of your fishing is a long way out then it might be worth a look at but if not it aint worth it as u cant use it on a lot of places. unless u have spare spools then i dont matter

Thanks for the replys guys

I am not going to bother with braid becouse i am put of with its downsides and i do use txi alarms so i dont want to risk damaging then.

Prob use 10lb mainline with a leader and se if that helps

many thanks

I obviously don't catch enough fish to let the braid run through the alarm then.

Dave,
I might be out Thursday night, If I am have a go with my rods.
They are loaded with power pro and I will guarantee that you will feel the difference compared to mono.
In fact I will bring one of the rods loaded with mono so that you can feel the difference.
