Default Wild Life - Transferred

We must have some angling wild life stories between us.
A couple that spring to my mind are being attacked by a stag deer at Shatterford fishery, as its also a wildlife sanctuary. The deer roam free and pick on the young and vulnerable, of which i was at the time. One particular male stag took a liking to the bread i was using and rose on its back legs, kicking the s**t out of me with its front legs, very painful as i was only about 12 at the time
I was also chased by a badger at Himley Hall in Dudley about 5 years ago, that was scary. I was also bit by horses there.
Anyone else been attacked by crazy animals..

Not sure about attacked, but have had hundreds of ‘interesting’ encounters with wildlife over the years. One that springs to mind was a pheasant that scared the crap out of me on the Top Pool a couple of years ago. I was fishing the paddock, where you’re right in the think of it; tree branches coming right down to the top of my open fronted Titan and sedges three foot tall a foot in front of you.
The pheasant flew over from the other side of the lake and by the time it realized the normal gap it used for landing was now occupied by a sleeping angler (about 3am) it was too late. All I remember was hearing a really loud wafting noise just before impact as it tried to apply reverse wing thrusters, and then WHAM. It landed right on my chest, slid over, and ended up right at the back of the bivvy on the floor. Noise, commotion, wings and feathers everywhere! Took a good five-to-ten seconds before I actually realised what was going on.
Other than that, the poisonous snake in the biscuit tin whilst fishing in France, but that’s best left for Miffer to tell on the bank.

Once while fishing with my dad at home farm in alsager, a flock of geese took a liking to my bait tray, but while i tried to scare them of they decided to turn on me and they preceded to attack me, i was only about 12, but the sheer number that came was quiet a sight. Never liked geese since, devious b*****ds

A couple of years ago my hubby and I were on a day session,I had a screamer of a run but knew summat was up as soon as I struck into it.I reeled in a mallard that was hooked in the chops and tangled in the line for added annoyance .I couldn't free it, so held the bird while my fella ad a go,he'd just about sorted it when the duck struggled free and ditched the hook in his finger past the barb! As you can imagine he was not happy, luckily the cold water had numbed his hands so he managed to get it out himself.I tried really hard not to laff but you know what its like I just couldn't help myself.

Never been attacked by any wildlife myself, one of the best moments was after fishing one evening watching a family of badgers near to the hole, in spring when they had little pups
What other sport can you get so close to the wildlife? only today i saw a few different types of finch, great tits, blue tit, various waterbirds, curlew and a sparrowhawk landed on a branch only 3ft from where i was fishing

I've noticed the not so nice creepy crawlies are wakin up to, I have to admit i'm a total girl where they are concerned ,don't get me wrong you won't catch me running up the bank screaming but I can't sleep if I know there's somethin with big hairy legs loose in my bivvy,I have to go a S.A.D mission .But the most annoying bug for me has got to be the dreaded DADDY LONG LEGS ,can anyone tell me what use they have ,last year was a nightmare, we were overrun ,the last thing you need when u'v gotta tie a rig up usin a headtorch is them dive bombin you The noise of em flappin round drives me INSANE.

Can you tell me where you can get an applicator thats small enough so that I can try.Or do you reckon the total immersion tactic would be more effective? Some of the spiders that have tried to shelter wiv me have been so big I could make out their piercings and tatoos!

I had an encouter with a pheasent once it kept trying to get at my bait would not leave me alone in the end quite scary. Another one was while i was in Belgium i had already asked the lads if i needed to keep my eyes out for anything all they said was Hedgehogs! I thought they were taking the ****! So after a few nights there we decided to have a kebab one night. The remains of the chips i kept in my little rubbish bag by the side of my biv. Woke up about 4 in the morning to hear scratching, thought it was a rat i **** myself it was the biggest hedgehog i'd ever seen so i put my torch on he just froze and looked at me. So from then on i had a vistor every night! To be honest they kept me company cause i was in the corner swim on my own.

I’ve had quite a few encounters with mink on the Top Pool as well. The one that sticks in my mind was when I was walking round to the point from the Black Hole to bait up and came across a rabbit in its death throws. Was not sure what was up with it but it was not long for this earth, so I continued on. After baiting up I came back round and it had gone from the spot – I was proper flummoxed. It was nowhere to be seen. Did rabbits play dead? Anyway, carried on round the path, got to the rodie and there it was, right in the middle of the path – stone dead. As I stand above it wondering what the hell is going on I suddenly hear the distinct call of not one, but two mink, and the penny drops. Then, bold as brass they both come marching out from behind the tree and drag it off into the undergrowth from right at my feet!
Used to see them all the time on there. There are so many rabbits that it’s easy pickings. I remember once lying on my bed chair as a family of mink ran along the waters edge by my rods; one adult and about five young – they all jumped in and through my rods, swingers, lines and everything – I was waiting for all hell to break loose when the delks sounded but they did not touch anything – very agile creatures.
The other funny one, again on the paddock, was in mid/late summer fishing a lovely warm overnighter. It was about three or four in the morning and I’m woken by strange noises, a kind of scratching on canvas and then a kind of plop and then a slow swish noise and another plop – dead hard to explain but it was well weird. Ignored it for ages but eventually my curiosity got the better off me. I woke myself up and lay on my back on the bed chair to work out where it was coming from and it stopped – definitely of the animal variety then. I waited quietly and then it began again, the culprits were mice, but they were acrobats – they were trying to scurry up the back of the bivvy from the outside to get on top of it – I watched from the inside for ages as they tried to get up, eventually one would get just far enough up to keep going and then the other would jump on, bounce the canvas and knock them both down the back again – I was in stitches for ages. I later worked out that they were after the tiny seed pods that were falling out of the tree above and were landing all over the top of my bivvy – another strange but true top pool experience.
