Default Winter fishing

Its nearly here - winter fishing!. Theres plenty on the forum re bait/tactics/keeping warm etc but what routine/do you do to keep sane during those long cold winter nights. Book/TV/DVD/Bed, I'll bet there will be some replys along the lines of "I watch the water" but when its really cold and raining/v windy most of us will be tucked up warm.
So what do you do!!!!

Keeping warm is the most important, hot food and drink + a good sleeping bag with a hot water bottle. If you are warm you can then concentrate on the fishing. . .

I don't mind the winter fishing, tend to have the waters i fish to myself. I agree with what some people are saying about enjoying it, becomes abit of a nightmare packing up in the wind and rain and straggering back to the motor soaking wet.
Arr well soon be summer

Lowey.

My son and I were going to have a real go this winter. We bought a load of cold weather gear and had dreams of a thirty in the snow.

We had the car packed for a 3 day sesion last week and my son went and brke his leg and smashed his ankle to bits playing football the day before the trip

Thats the end of our winter campaign. There are more important things than catching a few carp.

When I broke my ankle and foot (two separate incidents) I was hobbling along the bank with my tackle the very next day with my leg in plaster, no way was it going to stop me going fishing!!! Infact, a few weeks off work was a bonus

I think MarkeR's advice is sound. Be true to yourself, if you dont like doing the nights in winter, dont do 'em, simple as that. It's all to easy to get into the mindset that eveyone's out there fishing come rain, hail, wind and snow freezing their little monkeys off, but if their not enjoying it, whats the point.

If it's becoming a chore, just do the days. That's what I'll be doing now. I mainly fish mid weekers, but rushing back from work, setting up in the cold, dark and oftern wet isn't my idea of enjoying my fishing. Then getting up in what seems like the middle of the night at 5.15am when the alarm clock goes off for work......ARGHHHHHHH! No thanks.

I like doing the winter days to, it's a less gear, more mobile approach, and as MarkeR says, your more inclined to move with the fish if need be. Then there's always the thought at the end of the day of that nice warm fire and cold beer waiting for me in the fridge when I get back

Call me a wimp but that's my thoughts on it.....

Winter fishing is great! Less people on the water and those that are are usually 'proper' anglers.

The noddies always pack it in for the winter, (and just for clarity...... so do quite a few very good anglers )

I also love, although i don't get many, carp in there winter colours!!!

As for keeping sane during the nights i tend to listen to talk sport and have a read. This winter should be laneys and terrys book

Two winters ago i fished all through the winter on hawkstone going every week, i think i only missed only about 4 or 5 weeks when i couldnt go due to the lake freezing.Just hope we have a mild winter as i fancy doing a fair bit again splitting my time between Hawkstone and a southern syndicate.Less anglers on the bank when the fair weather campers get their slippers out instead of the rods means you can bait and fish the same swims most of the time love it.
