I think that, in the right hands, a bait boat can be a great and usefull tool for baiting and presentation but NOT a substitute for casting ability, watercraft, angling etiquate or common sense.

Just a personal observation here, but the other week I was fishing on a peg next to a typical 'all the gear and no idea angler' - a young lad with the latest bivvy, buzzers and cat thingy bait boat. He was dropping his hookbait OVER my pre cast baits DESPITE asking me where I was fishing, I chose to egnore this as I was coming to the end of my session.

I then witnessed him lose 2 carp in quick suscession in the snags due to the close proximity that he was able to drop his rig to the sunken trees on the far bank. By the time he had lifted into the fish with his FAR too slackly clutched reels they were well and truely fast in the snags resulting in him having to pull for breaks.

In the wrong hands they are going numb your angling skills and p1ss people off not to mention the fact they can cause damage/ kill fish.

dont agree with rowing it ut 40yards on a 3 acre lake to the far tree line, but places like sonning i can imagine dingy's being a must alot of the time

a sensible reply, much appriciated
might be lucky enough to have a go at a rarely fished resevoir down south, massive place, low stock but good un's, what i have been told is the only fish spotted have been at distance, can't really pre bait so if i do fish it will prob have to get me baits out at distance.
as for other reply's i can cast & i can spod just not that far

depends on alot of things mate if you are fishing a water where you are competing (spelling) with anglers that are all using one when bait is always sent to the horizon they are a good tool used in safe situations, although i have witnessed captures where i have seen the opposite , they are banned on the lake im fishing now, captures feel loads more satisfying ( again not sure if its spelt right( grammer problem?), as for blacky (wrong spelling of user name) if he turned the lights off hitler wouldnt have seen it!!!!!!!!!!

Carp anglers dont use bait boats, thats a fact.....

And the above is about the only justification for using a bait boat. In the situation where somebody is unable to fish because of injury/disability then even I couldnt go against them.

Got one but still prefer to cast out and feel the lead down but its very handy on one water i fish, its about 170 acres and you can also use rowing boats but its easier to send the baits out with the baitboat. And i've had most success by sending a big solid PVA bag out rather than loads of bait (i cant cast a big bag 150 plus yards)

my twopenny worth....it wasn't so long ago that people used floats to register bites, or you stared at a piece of silver paper with a torch until you fell asleep and missed the bite........non angling friends think I am cheating by using an alarm and sleeping whilst fishing (trying to explain to them about bolt rigs and how the fish is actually already hooked makes my head hurt)....basically it's technology......as it improves there will be people who whole heartedly embrase it and others that stick to the tried and trusted methods.......I always thought that boats were cheating until I went down to Pavyotts mill and a chap said that I should be fishing up one of the channels (couldn't get there because the wind blew my line onto an island on the cast) anyway this guy brought his boat round and took my rig and some bait to the absolute perfect place (where I could not cast to even without the wind).....I still blanked......did actually think about getting one......but old habits die hard as they say.......lets just say that they have there place on some waters....personally don't see anything wrong with them.....and anyway it's only technology that lets you punch a bag and bait out to 130 yards plus....you can't do that with a split cane rod.....well I can't anyway

Default Boats.

John, the answer to the original question is as Blacky said, stiff coated hook link and p.v.a nugget, thats it.I myself have had a boat for 3 years, and used it WHEN NEEDED. I have never once been tangled, because as we all know presentation is key.As for people thinking that you cant cast if you use a boat, makes me giggle as i am sat hear looking at my Korda trophy from thorpe park show three years ago for casting!! If you did car racing, you would tune the engine to do better,if you were a runner, you would buy top running shoes to be quicker, people always go on about having the EDGE in this game.Say you cast to an island and it landed right on the money, first thing your thoughts are hoping the rig is all nice and sweet! The boat takes away that doubt.I myself am against fish finders(echo)(g.p.s) etc. Asthats where watercraft should come in,but i'm sure theres an arguement for that one too.In the right place they are a valuble tool,in the wrong hands, like beer, fireworks, cars there will always be a negative to it.To say there is no place for them and its not angling(cheating) is an opinion. I use mine when needed, and it helps, thats my opinion. Anyway ive got 15 Microcats for sale £50.......Now who wants one!!!
