I ususally take a 9mm Baretta or an AK47 if I take my barrow. These seem to work as a deterrant. I use the 9mm for marking up and the AK47 for putting in my pegs in hard ground so I do have a legit reason for carrying these

LOL - Just rely on my sculpted guns and charm should the worst occur!

A word of advice and warning, which I gained from a couple of years in 'The olde Bill'

Everything in the law is about the perception of others!

So, should the worst occur on the bank! And you are in ear's shot of others.

Start screaming and shouting for the assailant to get off, leave you alone and quite litterally cry for HELP!

Therefore, regardless if anyone has seen you put your peg mallet to use or not!

Witness perception from all others on the bank was that you were being attacked, heard you screaming get off and crying for help.

Something which may be a mile from the truth whilst you're mistaking some sneaky gits head for a peg as you hammer it into the ground whilst catching them in the act!

Today's word children is witness perception!

Tomorrow I'll give tips on defence's against assault in a built up place that's covered with CCTV!

If, however, you were using an inoffensive item that you legitimately had to hand to 'defend yourself' then you stand a much better chance of not getting into trouble. Surely we all carry heavy and sturdy banksticks with us for rocky ground and I know I certainly require quite a very large mallet indeed to get my bivvy pegs in. You've just got to think laterally.

I also carry a knife with me for chopping baits up (and a million other uses). However, if anyone is stupid enough to consider that drawing a knife on someone is even close to being a good idea then, in my opinion, you need your head looking into (an arrangement that may very well occur if you do chose to wave knives at hoodlums).

Mike.
All obvious stuff Mike...but thanks anyhow...

That just shows how us fisherman can go about our business legally tooled up on a scale that would make Rambo envious. If I was a thief I would not target an angler!!!

That air pistol/rifle you carry for shooting vermin or the odd rabbit for the pot, the 9" Bowie knife legitimately used for chopping up the odd stick of pepperami, the 3kg Stainless bankstick etc (by the way my Steve Neville FO range is still up for sale)

ps Don't forget some CS gas/pepper spray/mace...the evidence will be well evaporated by the time the Old Bill/Paramedics arrive to treat our unfortunate thief...

Lads I think enough has been said about methods of protecting your tackle, please refrain from making similar posts. As the Admin Team has already stated, we have to be very careful regarding any threats etc which may concern violence.
Any more and the thread will be closed.
Cheers

I think you'll find in certain place's if not all you will need to possess a licence to shoot vermin and to carry your air rifle/pistol in a public place

Also as c.s gas is controlled under the firearms act I would seriously advise against using it (unless you want to get arrested or worse!!)

If weapons are needed then the trusty mallet is your best option!!

Lee's words are wise indeed

Could never afford to replace it if i was done over on the bank... for the sake of £13 a month you would be foolish not to especially if you are fishing some of the park waters.!!

Leaving gear unattended on Clifton is on par with giving someone the Pin code for your cash card.
Harsh lesson learnt the hard way in my opinion.

I know that but he's bailiff and has to go round when someone new comes on to charge for day or season tickets. It's a shame IMO as the lad works hard!!

Stig, what are you on? there is no individual named in this instance and all the talk on here is hypothetical and I think you are over reacting to a scenario that won't happen or planned to happen it is just a personel opinion of the forum users who are faced with this type of danger when we are out fishing as law abiding citizens. In todays day and age of the knife crime I would not hesitate to disable any would be attacker or theif by whatever means or to hand. They make the choice of trying in on with you and should be prepared for the consequences that may follow. If the old bill don't like this then they should doing thier job and locking up these individuals who seem to be protected more than the law abiding person who wants to fish in peace at the end of the day.
