Where you went wrong see is you didnt put the fuse wire through before closing the bottom.

You then make a hook out of the end stickin out and hang it on your line. The line attaching your fairy top to the bank stick is 2 inches shorter than the drop from your rod, so when you get a take the fuse wire straightens and the line runs free ....simples

Fairy bottle tops were a major dilema in my life at the time!

Clip them closed and they could wrap around the rod on the strike, even if they didn't you were always trying to remove them off the line whilst playing fish.

If hung on the line they would flirt up to 15 yards behind you on the strike, then having concentrated on the hooked fish, I could never find them in the long grass.

Red ones were a nightmare, being red/green colour blind, I couldn't see them if fishing on a grassy bank, and I could deffo never find them if they flirted off!

Yellow ones were at a premium, used to try and get my mum to buy the bottles with yellow tops, but so did all the other kids..........nightmare only red ones left.

Did you shove mud up the bottom on windy days to increase the weight?

I was a much happier bunny when we switched to coils of silver foil, which I still use sometimes and get some very strange looks.

I'll have a look in the garage but don't hold your breath.

MUD! From cheshire mate, we used plastacine (spell check)

Didnt do silver foil either we (from cheshire) used white wine top covers cut down the middle. They didnt crush when you were trying to get em off your line.

Re fairy tops.....why didnt you tie em to your banksticks I found all yours all around the Mist

Here`s two........

Na mate, Bebbo pinched all mine from around moston

I used bottle tops pre clip or hair grip inserts, I'm talking 1972 here, and if tied to rod rests the hook of the bottle top wouln't flirt off, being tied from beneath.......would have needed about 6ft of string for the tie..... recipe for a big wangle in my case. Those in your piccy look a little hi-tec for my tackle box.

I prefered silver foil coils to the plastic coils as they made a rustling noise as they slid on the line as a run developed or an even better noise in a "butt ringer", this often gained my attention in the pre buzzer days.

The foil base from a chippy pie made the best rustle happy days

My biggest dilemma was, do i let go of the rod with 1 hand and try and undo the fl.top with the other or just play the fish with it still on ! after a lot of practice i learn't to open them with a precise flick as though you were flipping a coin....i strongly recommend mastering this technique if you are new to fl.t's

Brilliant thread this, it was funny as I actually still have some bottle tops in my old seatbox in me mums, also I was mooching around in my dads loft the other week and found my first fishing basket, inside was a few boilies which must have been 20 years old, I remember my Dad buying them when I was kid as well, he only bought one pack and never caught a sausage..!

They were like stones lol
