First of all where abouts on the Dove have you had a look? I used to fish the SOTAS stretch at scropton before they had it. I caught lots of barbel from there around 10-15 years ago upto 6.5lb but saw much bigger and got snapped up quite a few times on 8lb line..I should have upped it really to 10 or 12 but I wasted most of my money back then on ale not fishing gear. I have heard and seen pictures of double figure barbel from this stretch and others including the fenton stretch. As for chub they used to average about 2-3 lb but bigger were there but I never caught any..also some grayling and also CARP I kid you not. Well worth fishing...its a lovely river.

Thats the stretch where we looked mate, looks great, some nice calm areas away from the fast water. Never caught a grayling before, the only fresh water fish i havent caught so that would be a bit of a mission. Carp in there aswell you say??? Nice
. Cant wait give it a go when the season opens.... you cant beat a bit of noddy angling now and again

Fished it on and off for years, and with more anglers, the last two seasons have been noticeabley harder!
Although when you do catch you've a good chance of a specimen now with 4lb+ Chub and quite a few double-figure barbel coming out! I have never done any 'bit fishing' other than messing about with minnows on a maggot feeder so can't give you much help there. At the end of the day, no 'ace post' on here will enable you to catch fish, your best bet is to keep your eyes peeled on the water, and don't be afraid to move; just try an hour or so in a few different spots before moving to a different area in hope of finding the fish. Good Luck and happy fishing

Had a day off work last week and decided on a day on the Dove for the first time, fancied a change from watching the buzzers and needed some peace and quiet with no dog walkers and boats.
Saw one other angler all day, got nettled and stung crawling around finding swims, probably covered 1 1/2 miles of bank trying likely spots. Real Mr Crabtree stuff and most enjoyable, though am aching in places that haven't ached for a long time It really took me back and was one of the most enjoyable days fishing in a long while, having to read the river and locate where the fish were likely to be. The day was topped off with 2 barbel of just under 7lb, heart stopping stuff when these were hooked. Couldn't wait for another go, so went yesterday morning (140 mile round trip ). Had an 8lb'er and a chub about 2 1/2lb. Think my priority may be changing a little, a double figure barbel or 30lb carp? |
