I haven't fished the goyt for years and since id never actually caught anything from this river and the fact ive been struggling with the carp of late i decided to have a bash last week.
i only had a few hours to fish as i had to pick my lad up from school,
so armed with a box of maggots i hit the river.
instead of just chucking and hoping, finding the fish was the first job,
now call it luck but almost straight away i came across a nice little swim that held a few fish that i could see from the bank.
now instead of my usual rush to get the rod in the water and as there was only 3 fish in the swim (that i could see) i decided to just sit and watch and flick the occasional maggot out to see how they reacted ... every one of em was rapidly gobbled up so out came the rod.
.... first cast under an overhanging tree saw the float dip under and out came a little gudgeon... small?, definitely.... happy? over the moon
... the next few casts didn't produce anything but it wasn't long before the other fish in the swim came back into sight.... i spotted a fish darting between a couple of rocks, so he was my target,
i cast the float up river and trotted it over his head and he was straight on it... gutted, lost at the net..... but, he went straight back to his spot behind a big rock, so i sat and watched him for a bit over a couple of cigs and decided to have another go at him , so i flicked a few more maggots out and surprisingly he hit another so i cast a couple more times and it wasn't long before i had him hooked again.... the result a lovely little brown trout ...well happy
i stayed in the same spot as i could still see a couple of other fish hanging around, so i gave it another hour and managed to land 2 grayling which i was well pleased with.
moved to another spot and landed a couple of small chublet (and lost a few more).... after that i was done, more than content with my haul for the day.
last time i fished the goyt (15 odd years ago) it was a s hit hole,
but now its a totally different river... full of life and unbelievably clean in comparison to the dumping ground it used to be, and catching 4 different species in a couple of hours is testament to that
ive got a feeling it wont be my last trip down there
(sorry for the long post, i can ramble sometimes

)
