This trip out had been arranged some 6 weeks previously.

The opportunity to get some decent bank time plus fishing a place that I hadn’t before had given me renewed enthusiasm for an early start.

Tackle and bait all prepared the night before so it was only a matter of dragging it up the cellar steps and out to the car.

Meeting up at 6.00 a.m. at the Little Chef was the first surprise of the day, as it was now an Indian Restaurant! After a quick fag and catch up off we set, arriving minutes later. The first real look at the water, with the impressive hall as a fitting backdrop.

After what seemed an age everything was set up and ready to go, my estranged friend already having added more than half a dozen fish to his net by the time I’d just plumbed around.

First chuck in with the waggler saw the float settle then carry on settling. Fish on, on the first cast, obviously a fluke, but welcome nonetheless. Rebaited and cast out again, this time the float not having time to settle before being dragged under, very hungry Roach being the culprits. It carried on like this for 2-2 ½ hours, until I though I’d try something a bit different. The fish were definitely “having it” so out came two tops threes for my pole, just the top threes nothing else. One set with 3-4 inches of line on the bottom and the other just off fishing with only 3 no.8s and 2 no.10 droppers.

The close in rigs really worked well, chopping and changing between the two as well as baits kept the fish coming, even had one taken by a pike after it had attacked my keepnet.

One of the most enjoyable days fishing I’ve had for a long while, a massive thanks to Jon for taking me as a guest.

Oh and here’s the result...

Tried not to name the venue, but gave away enough clues away...

It's a bit tricky walking on the gravel when you're fully laden with Tackle!!!

Just like to comment on the fact that you've took the liberty of using a mat for your end of session catch photo, good to see that fella

Always pains me to see pics of match anglers with expensive poles, boxes and the like and then showing little consideration for their bag...

Credit where its due and something many need to pick up on.

If there was a thumbs up smilie it'd be....... here.

Thats a net full Just goes to show the potential of that venue, it's as prolific a match venue as it is a carp water well done

Default something else to add...

I'd say 99% of the fish were unmarked, odd one or two had some damage but that's probably down to the predators.

Immaculate water, which is a credit to those that fish it, and the club that runs it.

If I had more time on my hands I'd be joining straightaway unfortunately I don't which makes visits like this that bit more special.

A real jewel in the crown...

Funnily enough i also recognise that wall probably because i took the photograph it was a good day but aren't those size 18s and 20s hooks tiny and that 2lb line very thin when over the years you have become accustomed to 12lb sensor and size 8s hooks .

Default first time in a while

that I've scaled my tackle up instead of down.

Finishing on a 14's, now that's a BIG hook ... (for me).

Nice one squirrel

Proper fish, proper water.

I will need to explain to Pricie and Gaz that you don't need a pellet bomber waggler do daaaa, with pumped bait on a muddy hole to have a good day ... They have gone over to the ....... Dark side

More joining the exodus... more untainted silver fish for me...

The way things are going though it won't be long before:

a) the art of stick float fishing is long gone
b) the days of fishing for these species will have gone too

It's great to catch a netfull of fish, but they don't have to be carp (all the time).
More and more so recently the angling press is filled with match reports from these hole in the ground waters with 100lbs+ in five hours. I'm not saying that there isn't any skill involved, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Nice work

Fished one of the 1 rod swims around this time last year for the carp on a short evening session, 12lb line, 8's hook and a worm on the edge of the pads. Had one perch after another to around 6oz, so put 2 grains of corn on and dropped in under the branches of a tree and started catching roach on the drop

Tried prawn and started catching perch again. It's probably a far better general coarse venue than many realise, would be my luck to scale down then end up finally hooking a carp in there

He who dares Rodney, he who dares...

By the looks of it there aren't that many who target the coarse fish, all the other anglers on were after the carp.
