Default single hookbait success...cheap as chips!

After a reasonably successful session on Home Farm last Thursday night (7, runs for four fish) all singles, but I caught a mirror, a common, a zip linear and a leather (weird eh? one of each!) on the 'single yellow pop up on one rod in the middle' technique.

I had a few hours spare last night, (which is rare with a wife and young children!) so I popped down to my local armed with just the rods, a bag a bucket and my radio to listen to the United match.

The three rods were dispatched with small bags and bottom baits on the 'usual' spots and I settled down ready for the game.

Nothing happened (not unusual on this lake) but then I saw a cheeky fish pop his head out in the 'out of bounds' bay area to my left. I think he thought I hadn't seen him as he continued to cavort and swirl away around 120 yards out, tight to an overhang. (what to do? I thought..)

I then remembered the successful method on Home farm and with only half an hour of daylight left I thought 'why not?'
A single 'scopex squid special' was soon winging it's way in mr carp's direction...

O.k, it took me five casts to get the distance and 3 casts to get it 'spot on' but I was happy to be angling for a fish I could see for a change.

United kicked off and I listened to Ronaldo miss his penalty, just as the commentator was banging on about it, a 'one bleep' followed by a screamer had me on my feet and bent into a carp!! (isn't that the best feeling in the world?)

a decent scrap (once I'd got it in from 120 yards) under the tip gave me a nice heavily plated original mirror of 18lb 8oz.

Well chuffed, except, i forgot the camera. Oh, well pack up and catch the rest of the game in the pub!!

When I got up this morning I found the camera in my rucksack all along!!

I've decided to continue with the single baits only now (save me loads of cash on bait!) and I hope to get amongst a few more and have some pics next time!

Took my single hookbait approach to roman lakes on Thursday night. Didn't finish work till 5.30 and due to horrendous road works (is it me, or are they everywhere at the moment?) i didnt 'bump down the track' till 6.30 to find it really busy! Was a bit miffed to be charged £10 for a few hours too! (can't they do an evening ticket for £5?)

Luckily a guy was packing up, so I jumped in behind him (felt like my old broadlands lake days) and chucked two 'scopex specials' to the far margin. I notice everyone casts really tight to it, so I thought I'd drop them about 15 feet short.

As I put the indicator on the left hander, the line ripped from my hand, but it turned out to be a fish trailing a lead as it was soon off. It was action of a sort though and it turned a few heads as it looked as though I'd jut pitched up, cast out and had a run!!

Nothing else happened, and myself and the guy next to me began the chain smoking, chain brewing to take our minds off the last half our of 'bite time' and I probably left his ears ringing with my constant cockernee chat! Turned out a few twenties had been out to 24lb from the islands (but it was all stitched up) and he had blanked. (but fishing redesmere I'm sure he's used to it lol)

It got dark quickly, but still the shout of 'pack up now please' didn't come so I hung on and hung on, packing up little bits at a time until all that was left was the rods, mat and the net.

It was just me and my new mate Brad left and he started to wind his rods in when you guessed it, 'bleeeep' a massive drop back had me winding down furiously...

10 minutes later a beautiful clean leather was on the mat.
O.K, he wasn't the biggest, but at 13lb 13oz he made my day and gave me a great scrap as he kited all over the lake.

Now for the best bit, I took my camera this time, but as Brad tried to take the pics, the battery went flat!!! NOOOOO!!

Luckily, he took some on his camera so I owe you one mate, thanks!

Then it was the mad pack up and head home for last orders! magic!... I was well pleased with my 3 hours on the bank for one fish, just not too pleased with the price of a 'day' ticket and the state of my tyres!

Cheers,

shallowman

The fish is in great condition too

Excellent account, and good to read, now that's what I like to read in this section. Not a "here's a 40 from my super secret stealth undercover cloaked syndicate"

Top bombin mate
