depends on the depth of the spool really, usually 300yards is more than enough for most situations

so using mono as backing yes this can be done but remember that not all situations are the same and with braid you can get a few wind knots that does your head in lol and make sure there is enough braid on so you can cast then if a fish runs it has enough so you wont be goin on to the mono because in my mind that would be a bit dangerous mate

braid is quite thin compaired to line.i learned this to my cost when loading my reels.i use 30lb whiplash for my piking.get a spare spool, put your braid on first, then put your line on to the lip.then wind it on to another spool,it should be spot on.

Post Braid

allreet boys heres one for you? I have just bought an Emblem spod reel and i am going to fill it with braid. The spools seem quite shallow so maybe could get 300 yards of braid on no problem. Now i am sure it has been mentioned that you have to have mono backing on the spool to prevent the braid slipping is this correct?
Cheers Slim.

Tony, you HAVE to back up with a wee bit of mono when using braid, for the simple reason that the braid has no 'grip' properties therefore when loaded up on a metal spool it will slip-ie if you were snagged up and had to pull for a break, the drag would be screwed up to max and the entire braid would spin on the spool once pressure is applied-thus by using some mono backing you will overcome this problem. Besides,as mentioned in previous threads, when will anyone have over 200 yards of line/braid out unless on Lac du Der??

Cheaper to back up by far my good man...

Just started to use braid for my spod and marker. All I am going to do is strip the mono off the reels leaving enough room for the braid. The maths is simple braid(30lb whiplash) is 3 times thinner than the 12lb mono so if I remove 50 yards of mono then I can get 150 yards of braid on.Just do the maths its pretty simple

Just remember not to fill the spool up to the extent you would do with mono, filling them up to the rim with braid will result in birds nests which are a mare to unpick due to the braids thinness and also dangerous if going for a big chuck.

I've had it wrap around the butt ring a couple of times and even heard of someone having theirs torn off as the braid entangled around the ring whilst winding one up for a big 'un. Hilarious if you're on the far bank observing, right until you get a free Korda 4oz distance lead and a sore eye

It also helps to soak the braid prior to loading and put it on under as much tension as you can.
