It also helps to soak the braid prior to loading and put it on under as much tension as you can.
good tips as well Ollie..i never thought to say that....as I had heard that braid upto the rim was a bit dodgy...

Yeah very dodgy Deano,usually people fill it up to the rim,have three or four chucks,get a birdy and then cut off about thirty or forty yards anyway so its a waste of braid trying to squeeze extra on TBH. I find it tends to find its own 'correctness' after a while and several casts,you may think you've got it bang on and then it birds up again,just bare with it and eventually the birdnests will go.

The sheer fact that its so low in diameter will add to the distance achieved anyhow,so it matters not a lot if its not right up to the spool lip I've found....especially with that whiplash,good stuff...

even though your spool may be quite shallow,i doubt 300 yrds of braid will fill em mate
