when i use a running rig i get the bits from the Korda stable.............quality bits even if they are on the tad expensive side...................

try putting a shocka bead on the leadcore too............... set at about 6 inches from the lead arrangement it gives a great hooking system but should still give with any excess pressure allowing the kit to come off in case of a break

do you mean a bead 6 ins above the lead so the fish will run 6 ins before hitting the lead?

i sure do ................if the leads heavy enough it gives excellent hooking power................i was using this rig in january on bolesworth..............had 12 screamer takes resulting in 12 fish in 3 sessions....whereas the bolt rig was giving me the occasional beep !!!

I've been using a running rig on one of my rods for about a year now and usually do the same as Phil has described. I've had plenty of screamers on it!! Its a top rig but I dont see it getting used by other anglers that often! Dont know why IMO its much better than some of the over complicated rigs about!!

Coming at it from another angle, you could just try a hooklink that's 6 inches longer couldn't you with your bolt rig set up! Same effect?

Been using a running rig with slack line for 2 yrs now - at least on one rod. Catchs 3 to 1 vs bolt rig. Only variation on this is on runs waters where it does't make much difference. Phils right go with Korda. Word to the wise make sure the beed will pass over the knot to the leadcore - the last thing you need is a death rig

cant remember the last time i used a bolt rig

been using running leads for quite a while now with some success, having said that i know a few lads down south who use bolt rigs in the margins with big 3-4oz leads and short hook links for immediate hook penetration (i said penetration ) and it works for them

personally though, 4-5ft shockleader 1oz dung lead and a tail rubber over the swivel, nice and light just how it should be - minimal resistance

I like the vicious hooking potential of a bolt rig. Benefit of a running rig to me is indication and if you hook them properally shouldnt be an issue with a bolt rig (hence the bolting bit)
Also like to use leadcore and feel its unsafe to use with a running rig but thats just my opinion.

Thumbs up

if running rigs were to be used having thought about it i think that i would fish them on a length of tubing instead, as well as the safety issue, it is an easier material (tubing) to deal with when it comes to threading beads on etc

i use balt rigs for most of my fishing but use runners when needed, same as phil i use a stop rubber to create a bolt effect up the lead core, i like the stop rubber to slip easy so's the lead can come of in the event of a break, the closer to the lead the more of a bolt rig it becomes, the further i slide the rubber up the lead core depends how crafty the kippers are, it's a versitile method pal i find it dose away with drop backs and all
