Default stiff rig.

HI ladies and gents......
i was fishing this week end and i got talking to a lad about rigs, well tried my best to. he was fishing a stiff rig and supple inch / hair rig and said it was harder for the carp to blow out.
Can any off you experienced carp kings advise me on any good braid / hooklinghth to try this rig with. I was thinking off the type you can strip the coating off to tye the hair/ hook on for a good pop up rig. And i could use balance weights or putty to balance it with..
any help will be greatly appreciated

There was a good article by Kevin Nash in ACF recently on these type of rigs.

He reckons the in-vogue strippable braids are no match for the stiff mono boom with 1-2" of soft braid at the hook end.

It makes sense if you think about how these rigs are designed to work plus it seems everybody uses these strippable braids. (very user friendly)

Tim Paisley has also touched on the same subject.

iv been doin well.
on 25lb mono. with about 2 inches of sinklink braid. which the hook is tied to . the mono has the stiffness to make this rig hard to eject. and being mono is has a degree of suppleness to it as well! infact unless faced with a different situation than where im fishing atm its the only rig i use!

Try some of the Korda Hybrid mate when stripped it's very supple but if you steam the coating it stands straight like it's been on viagra

Use it with a double bollie bait on a blowback ring it's very hard for the fish to shed

Hope that helps

25lb mantis dark is a good strippable braid for silty water. if u did use this and peel it back, it wouldnt be a stiff rig but a COMBI RIG

Korda IQ is good for stiffies

forget the the coated braids unless your fishing long distance's, id go for 25lb amnesia for your boom section and 15lb multi-strand for your supple bit coated braids are OK for making quick stiff hinged rigs or casting long distance's (because you know there not gonna tangle) nine's times out of ten id go for a supple braid

cheers cookie.

agreed.... 25lb Amnesia.. clear or black.. depending on lake bed for the boom section.. 6-9 inches i currently use mine.. although i have seen them 12inches (boom sections that is ) and as for the hooklink.. i have been using a 12 or 15lb mono..

havent yet caught anything on it.. but its always something i use when things are a bit tough

If you fish nylon straight through Suffix do one called magic touch or soft touch, can't remember which now (have got 2 spools of it though ).

Is a 15lb green mono and costs about £3 for 20 metres, I use it pretty much all of the time and is well worth a look.

I think anglers confuse stiff with semi stiff.Amnesia is only semi stiff,i use ESP bristle in 25 pound and that is stiff. If a fish blows back with amnesia it will bend backwards but bristle stays there in the same place.I join up using a shocky knot 15 pound dacron at around one inch long. This rig is awesome if combined with a gamakatsu wide gape size 6 and a floss hair.A good test of stiff is to hold it out by the finger tips and see if it stays in a straight line (not rocket science) most so called stiff materials just droop down.
