Default problem with zig rigs

hi had a little problem when fishing a zig rig a few days ago .
i was fishing a zig of about 5ft in length with a brand new hook and a lead of 3ozs
well i got a couple of absolutely storming drop back takes but when i tried to tighten up into them there was nothing there
now i very rarely use zig rigs but as nothing was being caught on the lake and id seen a few fish topping here and there i decided to use them , but after missing to belting takes i was beginning to wonder what the problem was
has anyone got any ideas ?
ps : there were no ducks or birds about so i can rule them out !

I have had this happen to me mate but i solved the problem , my hook was to close to my bait , when i made the hair a bit longer it seamed to work .... that was the only change i made to the zig rig and after that it work , and thats how i came to the conclusion longer hair

Never lose faith muka , zig rigs are well underused ....i think this may be down to the fact that sum anglers dont understand the mechanics of the rig . Try adjusting the hair mate but nothing else , if you find that doesnt work for you maybe look at the bait adn hook size , but remember only change one thing at a time so you know what made the diffrence .

When i fish zigs (quite often) I try to use the smallest hook possible. I have had a couple of dropped runs when using larger hooks for zigs. My favourite pattern for zigging is the esp raptor in size 10. Those drennan barbel hooks in 12 are good to.
