Default Fancy Rig Honesty Poll

Come clean.....honestly...

When was the last time anyone used a mal-aligner, withy, 360 degree anti-eject (looks like it belongs in a dungeon), D-ring, blow-back etc..etc..or are they just featured in the magazines (which are funded by the advertisers at the end of the day - Nash, Korda, Gardener, Fox et..al) to push a new expensive and unnecessary gizmo or create a name for an angler when he did not use the rig at all.. Prove me wrong...how much of this is gimmickery..anyone tried a standard paternoster lately...there's a rig they won't have seen for a while!!!!

Not being deliberately contentious....just thought provoking and I'd like to know how much more complex things have to be than the knotless hair. Are the barbel (for they are surely the new carp) anglers already adopting these rigs to keep the fish coming?

Stiff rig and chod, would probably fall under the complicated banner and nearly always have one on at least one rod so about 4 days ago was the last time i used them.

Mag aligner is a good rig too. D-Rig used for zigs a good few times so about 1 month ago for that one.

Got to pick the ones worth using thats all. But for all my bottom bait fishing i use a standard knotless knot, no tubing no nothing.

Default Rigs

I can honestly say that I have only in over 10 yrs carping ever used a handful of rigs...around six different rigs including simple knotless, line aligned, d rig, blow back (once and thought they were crap), withy once or twice, simple pop up on a rig ring sliding down the hook to a float stop rig...lol...dont know if its got a name. yes i have varied the hair length from time to time to accommodate double baits or maize etc. Most of my fish have come to simple line aligned knotless knot setups with a blow back element using some shrink tube...not those crappy rings....(rings may work for others but I dont like em for this).....oh forgot to mention one other rig I have used and that is Terry Hearns stiff link pop up rig....and it caught me my pb common first time out .I dont use out and out pop up rigs much so have not used this rig a great deal. RIGS...KEEP IT SIMPLE......thats what I think anyway.......it will be interesting to see others replies to this thread

Default Fancy rig poll...

Spot on Dean.

Jim Gibbo's Line Aligner - AWESOME.

A big improvement on standard hairs or the knotless knot IMO.

For bottom bait fishing i only ever used a line aligned knotless knot with shrink tube to help the hook turn. All i do to suit the situation is vary the hooklength from as little as 3 inches to 20 inches depending on the bottom. I'm not one for complicated rigs because more things can go wrong on them. For popups I use the same rig but change the hook and shorten the hair.
My favourite hooklength material is Amnesia its awesome If you haven't tried it yet give it ago, its cheap, stiff and strong
Tightlines,

well guy i must admit i wast a fan of usin a ring for my blow back rigs . but last nite i did lol didnt take a kettle with me as it was an over nighter inbetween work ...i like to have a bit of shrink tube on the shank of the hook to keep the bait inline an so that it doesnt wrap round on cast but i cudt do this so a small ring it was .... AN guess what i caught on it ... lol lol but most i will use either of the followin :

360 rig
standard blow back rig
chod
aligner
or T.H stiff rig

but for most of my fishin its 360 on one rod and blow back on the other ... {only usin 2 rods at the moment ....i have all the time in the world to fish {nites} so i keep the preasure to a minimum.AN here the one i bagd ..proof in the puddin hahahah

blowback rigs with a 3mm ring on the shank, not tubing................ allways..................been using them for nearly a decade..................in my opinion you are fishing for the pick up and the rig does the rest !

why fix it if it aint broke !

Nylon hooklink tied with knotless knot.

Not very subtle or advanced, but rarely tangles and just keeps on working for me. Like most things, confidence plays a major part and whenever I do try something different and it doesn't appear to be working I revert back to what has worked in the past.

I think the real reason chod rigs are used with pop ups is to actually get a decent pop up presentation over silt using a pop up. When a pop up is sucked in by the carp the rig will lean towards the carps mouth catching them in the corner of the mouth, whereas a bottom bait would need to be fully sucked in, in order to for it to get into the carps mouth and if it isnt sucked in strongly enough it cannot get the short hooklink to reach its mouth, if the carp are feeding finnicky.
