Got to agree with Grubby, am on my second sportster in 15 yrs.

Had to strip it down recently as the wire that runs through the generator had carboned up, quick scrape off with crimping pliers and it's as good as new again

Only criticism is the lack of control on the heat, is either very low or fierce, and that it leaves the pans and kettle black and sooty. But the reliability outweighs the criticism.

Haven't burned the eyebrows yet but the hairs on the back of my right hand are regularly singed when it fires up

Same here 2 sportsters since 1993, the first one only gave up 3 years ago and could have probably been repaired but I splashed out for a new one.Do occasionally use gas in the summer though

Kev / Grubby -

interesting stuff, glad there's still a few 'old school' Coleman fans out there

I have used a Reddex / unleaded mix from day 1 in mine. Presumably you guys still use just straight unleaded without major problems ?

The only other 'tip' i was given is to keep them 'pressured' between use - ie if you fill the cooker with petrol at home, make sure you pump it up & keep it pressured before the next trip.

I can understand the benefits of gas for short, mobile trips - but if you're on a big session you won't go far wrong with a coleman sportster, especially in the colder months.
