Default short or long?

how long is your hooklength? i have been using about a 3" one and a 6" one both with same bait cast to same area i have had more runs on the short one but lost a lot more as the hook bounces how long is your hooklength and have any of you experimented with short ones and found the same?

hiya gaz,
for 70% of my fishing i’l use six inch of snake bite, stripped back half an inch before the hook, i prefer long shank hook’s, and with a tad of shrink tube give’s the hook a better spin,
I’ve gone down as far as 31\2 inch with this set up in the past and have had some beltin results, i believe when they’re having it big style, a shorter hook link gives them less chance to manoeuvre!

on the other side of the coin, i reckon a longer link’s the way to go when targeting ‘v’ cute
kippers, top pool fish are the kings of cute,
and i think the longer links give a better presentation in terms of natural movement

I tend to use about 8 inches for my mono stiff links. I've tried making then shorter but i just dont get as many takes. However, i've found about 6 inch of braid and hybrid materials is better than 8 inch. I assume its got a lot to do with how the rigs lands on the bottom.

I opt for a link of about 4-5" usually.mantis gold stripped from near the swivel but like gazza I leave the coating on while tying the hook so it kicks out nicely like a line alligner, then I pin it down with lead scraps every 1 1/2".I go down to 3", but usually if i'v got an inline setup. The fish in the syndicate water seem a bit finicky so I'll be tryin a longer rig maybe 7-8" on a rod to see if pickups improve.I prefer braided and hybrid hooklinks for longer links cos of its lack of memory

For my normal fishing at the moment i'm using 7 inches of super nova. But for the top pool i think i might have to go a bit longer.

I never go shorter than 8", sometimes up to 15", dependant upon my fishing situation. Countless people have said to me, especially down the Swamp "bloodyhell, ive never seen anyone use em that long", and then a week later when they have seen that i catch well on them, they wind there rods in with 10" rigs, then that where the fun begins

I changed my hooklength to about 4" after using about 8" ones had a lot more sucess on shorter hooklengths so im sticking with them for now.

Think it all depends on the situation I find myself in. If I'm fishing with solid PVA bags I use a short hooklink of about 3 inches but if I was fishing over weed I'd adjust the length to suit and use a slow sinking hookbait with a foam nugget. I think you need to vary your length according to the swim your in as one size does not suit all variables

i have used hooklengths between 3" and 12" and caught on all...but at the moment I favour about 6" mainly of drennan sinkbraid, its good stuff....or snakebite if i'm fishing at longer range as it is less prone to tangles. I usually add a stringer or small mesh bag anyway to avoid tangles
