i am going to start fishing a few lakes which i have not fished many ( if any ) times before but they hold good 20lb+ in which is what i am after so what bait would you recommend me to use which will boost my confidence up that little bit more

A good quality boilie but to be honest i am a bit of a boilie angler and there may be better baits at this time of year. Not going to name any one company as you can choose that.
Maybe maggots.

cheers mate somebody as told me try maggots glued around a cork ball to act like a pop-up but i have only used it on a bit of a runs water before but then again it worked LOL

Dont bother with that mate, just get a needle and thread, thread on the maggots and then a piece of tiny foam (to balance out the hook) and tie onto a little metal ring tied on with the hair tag from a knotless knot.

At this time of year mate I'd go for something tried and tested like the old Tutti Frutti's or Trigga ice
